The Best Mexican Food in Canada

The best Mexican food in Canada, according to the experts: The 50, the Michelin Guide, and AAA have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Quetzal comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Vancouver and Toronto.

More Less

Restaurant 20 Victoria and Botanist hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide and Vancouver Magazine show up on more of this list than any other guide.

  1. A ten-metre open fire pit runs the length of this sleek College Street Mexican restaurant, and nearly every dish on the menu answers to it. The undulating ceiling, designed to echo the tarp-covered stalls of Mexican markets, sets the mood before the food does. Tortillas are pressed to order from heirloom corn nixtamalized in-house, and the mezcal and tequila cocktail program keeps pace with the kitchen. It holds a Michelin star and a spot on North America's 50 Best Restaurants.

  2. Rank 2. Restaurant 20 Victoria

    Contemporary Mexican

The open kitchen anchors this 24-seat contemporary Mexican tasting menu restaurant in the financial district, where cooks often carry their own plates to the table. The chef, Rafa Covarrubias, brought his team over from a Michelin-starred Oakville room to focus entirely on one menu, and the flavors here are vivid and precise in a way that a 70-seat operation rarely allows. The room is calm and dimly lit, the service warm without fuss.

  3. The bar at Botanist sits just inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim, intimate and posh enough that dressing up feels like the point. This is fine dining with a serious cocktail program, and the drinks lean into a nature-obsessed identity, including a glass-fronted lab where the team produces things like a martini built with kombu and sea asparagus. North America's 50 Best Bars placed it at number 38. The kitchen behind it runs hyper-local West Coast tasting menus alongside à la carte.

  4. Rank 4. Alma

    Modern Mexican

The kitchen grinds fresh masa from heirloom Mexican corn every day, which tells you something about the priorities here. Alma is a tasting-menu restaurant in Outremont where the chef threads his Tlaxcalan roots through Quebec seasonal produce, and the sommelier answers with a Catalan-leaning wine list. The result is modern Mexican cooking that doesn't ask for your permission to be unexpected. Canada's 100 Best ranks it 34th in the country.

  5. A covered outdoor taqueria on Yukon Street that feels like someone smuggled a great Mexico City back-alley spot into a Vancouver residential neighbourhood. The Mexican cooking leans a little ambitious, and the cocktail program punches well above the taqueria average. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place regulars quietly hope you won't find out about.

  6. Heirloom corn from Mexico, pressed and griddled into tortillas daily, is the entire argument for this taco shop on Adelaide. The room is white kitchen tile and worn wood, the menu is short, and everything arrives fast and hot before the meal is suddenly, almost rudely, over. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place you're already planning to revisit before you've finished chewing.

  7. Stunning murals and colorful carvings make Ophelía one of the more visually lively rooms in Olympic Village. It's a modern Mexican restaurant where the chef cooks pan-regional dishes rooted in family tradition, and the kitchen's Oaxacan mole blanco has a way of making a strong case for itself. Book ahead, because the place is always packed, and the outdoor patio fills fast on any decent evening.

  8. A small taco and tostada spot on Gerrard that earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand from a kitchen the size of a closet. The menu leans hard into seafood, with tostadas piled high and tacos built for flavor rather than tidiness. Expect bold, punchy combinations where the Pacific meets Mexico City. Easy to walk past, harder to forget once you've been. Cash-and-carry crowd, fast tables, no fuss.

  10. A small house in Sillery converted into a communal table d'hôte, where everyone sits together whether they planned on it or not. The kitchen pairs one chef's deep roots in traditional Mexican cooking with another's French instinct for jus and sauces, and the result lands somewhere genuinely its own. Organic Quebec produce, Mexican condiment logic, European technique: the menu shifts monthly to follow the seasons rather than the other way around.

  14. Rank 15. Chancho

    Mexican

The hand-chopped-to-order carnitas are what people talk about, and the tortillas are made in-house, which matters more than it sounds. Chancho is a taco spot on Commercial Drive, bright and informal, with the kind of line that tells you everything before you've read a menu. The Vancouver Magazine judges called the carnitas near perfect two years running, which is a bold thing to say about a taco joint, but the room full of regulars suggests nobody is arguing.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
