The Best Caribbean Food in Canada

The best Caribbean food in Canada, according to the experts: Air Canada, the Michelin Guide, and AAA have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Conejo Negro comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Toronto and Montréal.

More Less

Chubby's Jamaican Kitchen and Trini To D Bone hold the next two places. AAA and Condé Nast Traveler show up on more of this list than any other guide.

  1. The backyard patio at this Caribbean-Creole-Latin restaurant on College Street has wood planks, warm lighting, and enough greenery to make you forget there's a city out there. Inside, the room is a cozy nook built for sharing plates and lingering. The menu moves through fried chicken with smoked hot honey and braised beef over cheddar grits without losing momentum. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and it earned a finalist nod from Air Canada's Best New Restaurants list.

  2. The wood-burning grill handles jerk chicken here, and the smoke from it is half the reason to walk through the door. This is an easygoing Jamaican spot where the cooking is homey and unpretentious, the classics run deep, and the gravy from the curry goat or oxtail stew can be ordered as a side, which is the kind of menu decision that earns a place lasting loyalty. The Michelin Guide has taken notice.

  3. This is a casual Trinidadian counter spot in a residential stretch of Saanich, where the roti arrives as a hefty pocket stuffed with turmeric-stained chana and potato or braised pork with a kick that rivals espresso. You eat in a room covered in a tropical mural, fizzy Tings in hand, while a throwback playlist runs on a loop that has absolutely, at some point, rickrolled you. It's lunch-priced and ready for jeans.

  4. Rank 4. Kwizinn

    Haitian

Haitian poutine made with plantains and lobster tells you most of what you need to know about Kwizinn. It's a bright, casual Haitian restaurant in Verdun, the neighborhood southwest of downtown that's quietly become one of the more interesting places to eat in the city. Slow-cooked meats, spicy sauces, and recipes passed down through the chef's family form the backbone of the menu. Save room for the house-made donuts with mascarpone banana cream.

  6. Rank 4. Piklìz

    Haitian

Named for the fiery Haitian pickled condiment that shows up on every table back home, this warm Caribbean restaurant in Saint-Henri covers the walls with island paintings and small-framed photographs that feel more like a family archive than décor. The brothers behind it grew up between Montreal and Haiti, and the menu moves between the two places accordingly: Québécois poutine gets a creole riff, and the slow-braised goat practically dissolves on the fork.

  7. Rank 7. Baby Dhal Roti

    Homestyle Caribbean

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
