The best steakhouses in Japan, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and The 50 have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. JO comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Tokyo and Kyoto.
More Less
Nikuya Tanaka Ginza and Kitashinchi Fukutatei The UKAI hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The 50 next.

Rank 2. Nikuya Tanaka Ginza
Steakhouse
The chef here has been breaking down beef since childhood, son of a butcher and grandson of a cattle dealer, which goes some way to explaining why the Wagyu at this refined Ginza steakhouse hits differently. A long tasting menu works through ten-plus courses built around prime cuts, with aged Kobe beef as the centrepiece. The room is polished and the prices will remind you that you're in Ginza.

A Tie
Two places have the exact same Score, so they share #3. We don't pick a winner we can't back up.
- #3 Kitashinchi Fukutatei The UKAI (this place) 68.544
- #3 Le14e 68.544
-
Rank 3. Le14e
Steakhouse
A French restaurant named after Paris's 14th arrondissement, where a famous meat bistro once changed the chef's mind about what beef could be. The wagyu here is lean and grassy, seasoned with nothing but salt and pepper, then pan-fried in so much oil it borders on a deep-fry, which is exactly the point. Producers' signs cover the walls, organic red pours freely, and the whole thing has the cheerful conviction of a place that decided simplicity was enough.
