The best pizza in Japan, according to the experts: 50 Top Pizza, the Michelin Guide, and Gault&Millau have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. The Pizza Bar On 38th comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Tokyo.

More Less

PIZZERIA TRATTORIA MAGAZZINO and Yamaoka Pizza hold the next two places. 50 Top Pizza shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Gault&Millau next.

  1. Eight seats at a counter on the 38th floor of the Mandarin Oriental, close enough to the oven to feel the heat on your face. This is an omakase pizza bar, Roman-style rounds served one slice at a time, eight courses in the manner of a sushi counter. The chef is originally from Rome, the ingredients lean Japanese and small-farm, and the menu shifts with the season. It holds a spot on 50 Top Pizza World. Book well ahead.

  3. A pizza spot on Mt. Ikomayama with a view over the city and a crust that owes its soft, fluffy character to local Ikoma spring water. The chef trained in Italy and then quietly went his own way, cutting back on salt and working with vegetables from nearby farms. The result is something Naples wouldn't recognize and probably couldn't reproduce. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. It closes for the entirety of February.

  4. The pizza here crosses Naples with Japan without making a fuss about it, which is harder than it sounds. This is a Neapolitan-style pizzeria inside Azabudai Hills, run by a Neapolitan who has been in Tokyo long enough to know exactly where local ingredients fit into a classic dough. The menu is short and deliberate, the fermentation long, and the wine cellar personal. It holds the top spot on 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific and sits at number thirteen on the World list.

  5. A pizzeria-grill sitting inside Nagoya's busiest shopping arcade, Cesari runs on the reputation of Pasquale Makishima, who won the World Pizza Championship and then quietly built what amounts to a small Italian food empire in Japan. The menu spans red and white pies made with imported Italian ingredients, grilled meat, classic Italian dishes, and desserts from the in-house lab upstairs. The wine list is organized to pair with all of it. Ranked in the 50 Top Pizza World list.

  6. Rank 6. monk

    Pizzeria

  7. Rank 7. pizza marumo

    Tokyo-style Pizzeria

The charred crust here pulls like freshly grilled mochi, which tells you something about where this pizza fits in the world. It's a sit-down pizza restaurant in Ebisu run by a chef who came up in traditional Japanese kitchens and decided neither Naples nor Rome quite covered what he was after. The menu runs from familiar classics to pies topped with katsuobushi or soy-marinated tofu, where the comfort is Japanese even when the shape is Italian.

  8. The dough here is soft and pillowy in a way that signals someone has been paying close attention. L'Insieme is a pizzeria and grill in Kameido that leans warmly into Italian informality, with a menu that runs from classic pies to more offbeat combinations, plus a serious commitment to grilled meat and an Italian-heavy wine list broad enough to match both. It ranked 23rd on 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific, if that helps you calibrate the evening.

  9. Rank 9. PER TE

  10. Rank 10. MASSIMOTTAVIO

    Italian Pizzeria

Anime figurines and actual artwork line the walls of this two-floor pizzeria in quiet Eifukucho, a neighborhood that feels a world away from central Tokyo. The chef, Massimo, has spent decades making pizza in Japan and the pies here run generously sized, which is its own kind of statement in this city. Italian wines and a full menu of pasta, secondi, and desserts round things out for anyone who arrives hungry enough to go the distance.

  11. Rank 10. Pizzeria da Ciro

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Tucked between temples in Sakyo Ward, this Neapolitan pizza spot is run by a chef who trained in Naples and sources his ingredients strictly from Campania. The pies run larger than the Japanese norm, soft and light in the way that only a wood-fired dough done right can manage. The room is small and familiar, the staff attentive, and an Italian beer alongside is not a bad idea. It ranked 36th in 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific.

  12. Rank 10. TONCINI

    Pizzeria

An Italian chef running a proper Italian restaurant in snowy Tomakomai, and yet the pizza is built around Hokkaido's local produce rather than any nostalgic recreation of the homeland. The dough is soft and the menu runs well past pizza into pasta, secondi, and Italian desserts, with a wine list that spans the whole peninsula. It ranked 49th on 50 Top Pizza's Asia-Pacific list, which is an unexpected thing to say about a town famous for its snowfall.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
