The Best Korean Food in Japan

The best Korean food in Japan, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Korean Restaurant Byeo-Lee-Ya comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Kyoto and Tokyo.

Eat, change section
  1. A Korean fine dining restaurant in Kyoto where the chef trained in Seoul in royal court cuisine and came back with something to say. The set menu follows the idea that food and medicine share a root, so the multi-tiered lacquer box arrives loaded with Kyoto vegetables prepared as namul and kimchi, some dishes drawn from early Joseon recipes made before chilli peppers arrived. One Michelin star.

  2. Rank 2. HASUO

    Modern Korean

A modern Korean restaurant in a quiet Shibuya backstreet, where the chef runs Western technique through the flavors of his Korean upbringing. The banchan spread alone spans sixteen small dishes, and the ganjang-gejang, a sauce-marinated blue crab, is dialed back just enough for the subtleties to register. The room is the kind of place that makes you feel like you found something before everyone else did, which of course you didn't.

  3. Rank 2. Mugunfa

    Contemporary Korean

The restaurant takes its name from the rose of Sharon, South Korea's national flower, and that sense of national pride runs through every plate. This is a contemporary Korean dining room where the chef draws on childhood flavors and Western technique together, turning gimbap into rice crackers and pairing raw prawn with caviar and kiwifruit. The result is Korean cuisine pushed somewhere new, served with the quiet conviction of someone settling an old score with tradition.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
