The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Hong Kong

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

Cuisines

  1. Rank 201. Baci

    Pizzeria

The cocktail list here picked up a 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific award, which is either a compliment to the drinks or a gentle dig at everywhere else in the region. Baci is a bar attached to a lively Italian trattoria in the thick of D'Aguilar Street, and the aperitivo program leans into that setting hard, with wines, spritzes, and enough Italian energy to make Lan Kwai Fong feel briefly like Milan on a warm evening.

  2. Rank 202. Aqua

    Italian

The harbor views from the 17th floor set the tone before anyone opens a menu. Aqua is a date-night restaurant that splits its personality evenly between Italian and Japanese, so the table beside you might be ordering sushi while yours lands a lobster pizza. The room is low-lit and deliberately romantic, the kind of place where the occasion does half the work. Tasting menus and à la carte both available.

  4. The name is a Paul Simon reference, which tells you what you're in for before you've ordered. This cocktail bar in Sheung Wan keeps things deliberately unfussy, exposed ductwork and all, with a drinks list that leans playful rather than intimidating. The Long Time Listener, a house rum with sherry and butter popcorn, suggests the team enjoys naming things as much as building them. Named a 50 Discovery by The 50.

  5. The baked pork chop rice, buried under tomato sauce and cheese, has followed this neighbourhood eatery from its original San Wan Ho shopfront to its current Tin Hau home, and so have the regulars. Chef Wong's cooking is resolutely home-style: tea-smoked chicken, dried seafood stir-fries, steamed threadfin with yellow wine. Nothing here announces itself, which seems to be the point.

  7. Rank 207. Fireside

    Steakhouse

The only charcoal and wood ovens in Hong Kong anchor the open kitchen here, which means the smell hits you before the menu does. Fireside is a serious steakhouse in Central, with dry-aged cuts ranging from Rubia Gallega to Hanwoo, but the fire applies equally to tuna, prawns, and sourdough with smoked butter. Ranked 18th on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, it earns that with method and restraint rather than theatre.

  20. A specialty coffee shop in Sheung Wan where the roasting happens in-house and the staff will happily talk you through the bean origins before pulling your shot. The space is pared-back and calm, a minor miracle on a busy Hong Kong street, and the kind of room where people actually sit still for a while. Pour-overs and flat whites are the moves here.

  68. Rank 211. Vesu Pizza Bar

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A calzone shaped like a dome and named after Vesuvius tells you everything about the mood here. Vesu is a pizza bar on the 30th floor of One Peking Road, and the Victoria Harbour light show runs behind every meal like a screen saver nobody asked for but everyone watches. The menu spans Neapolitan classics and local riffs, with duck-and-orange and char siu pork pies alongside the standards. It ranked on 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific.

  74. Rank 277. Draft Land

    Cocktail Bar

Cocktails on tap, poured like craft beer, from a menu of pre-batched drinks that have been quietly winning over skeptics for years. This two-location cocktail bar, from a concept Antonio Lai brought over from Taiwan, lets you explore the menu with minimal commitment, which suits both the curious and the indecisive equally well. The flavor pairings lean local, with chrysanthemum, pu'er, and oolong showing up alongside the gin and vodka. Purists may grumble; regulars just order another round.

  76. A minimalist specialty coffee shop tucked into a quiet lane off the Wan Chai bustle, where the pour-over gets the kind of careful attention usually reserved for things that cost a lot more. The room is spare by design, which means the laptops outnumber the menus and no one rushes you out. It's a calm little pocket in a neighborhood that doesn't do calm easily.

  79. Rank 283. Foxglove

    Cocktail Bar

A golden propeller turns slowly against blue velvet curtains while the art-deco ceiling panels make you feel like you've wandered into a first-class cabin sometime around 1935. This cocktail bar in Central takes a fictional globetrotter as its muse, running the drinks menu through different eras of cocktail history. The private room goes full Orient Express. Wear something that doesn't embarrass the room.

  82. Rank 283. Stockton

    Cocktail Bar

Finding Stockton requires ducking down a narrow alley off Wyndham Street, turning left before a blind door, and climbing a staircase that deposits you into a cocktail bar dressed as a 1890s London gentleman's club. Braces-clad bartenders, house rules, and a serious whiskey list give it the full post-Milk & Honey treatment, and the retro London theme lands differently here, given Hong Kong's own colonial past. Difford's Guide awards it five stars.

  83. Rank 283. The Aubrey

    Japanese

The cocktail menu at this sleek bar on the 25th floor of the Mandarin Oriental is organized like an art collection, which tells you most of what you need to know. The current program leans into Japanese aesthetics, with milk-washed clarified drinks and shochu turning up where you might expect whisky. The room draws a polished crowd happy to pay Mandarin prices for the view and the craft, and on both counts the bar delivers.

  84. Rank 283. The Diplomat

    Cocktail Bar

A narrow letterbox window and a gilded back bar glowing amber set the mood before you've ordered anything. This cocktail bar occupies a moody corner of a Central alley, doing the Edward Hopper thing while remaining fully aware it's doing the Edward Hopper thing. The drinks are the point, and the kitchen pulls its weight too. A 50 Best Discovery and a Pinnacle Guide Pin for good measure.

    The awards

  85. Rank 294. Bakehouse

    Bakery

The egg tart here splits the difference between Hong Kong classic and Portuguese pastel de nata, which tells you a lot about how this bakery thinks. Grégoire Michaud spent years running pastry teams at the Four Seasons before going it alone, and Bakehouse has since grown into a small local chain. Croissants, hojicha doughnuts, and location-exclusive items fill the cases, making each outpost worth a separate visit.

  87. Rank 294. Kamcentre Roast Goose

    Cantonese Barbecue

Roast goose in a bowling alley is a sentence you don't expect to type, yet here we are. This no-frills Cantonese barbecue spot sits inside a sports club, all bright lights and zero ceremony, and it's run by descendants of the family behind the old Yung Kee institution. The goose arrives lacquered amber with properly gamey meat, and the char siu has the kind of charred, fatty crust that makes everything else on the table feel like a distraction.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
