  14. A specialty coffee shop in Sheung Wan where the roasting happens in-house and the staff will happily talk you through the bean origins before pulling your shot. The space is pared-back and calm, a minor miracle on a busy Hong Kong street, and the kind of room where people actually sit still for a while. Pour-overs and flat whites are the moves here.

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A calzone shaped like a dome and named after Vesuvius tells you everything about the mood here. Vesu is a pizza bar on the 30th floor of One Peking Road, and the Victoria Harbour light show runs behind every meal like a screen saver nobody asked for but everyone watches. The menu spans Neapolitan classics and local riffs, with duck-and-orange and char siu pork pies alongside the standards. It ranked on 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific.

  68. A minimalist specialty coffee shop tucked into a quiet lane off the Wan Chai bustle, where the pour-over gets the kind of careful attention usually reserved for things that cost a lot more. The room is spare by design, which means the laptops outnumber the menus and no one rushes you out. It's a calm little pocket in a neighborhood that doesn't do calm easily.

  73. Rank 278. Bakehouse

    Bakery

The egg tart here splits the difference between Hong Kong classic and Portuguese pastel de nata, which tells you a lot about how this bakery thinks. Grégoire Michaud spent years running pastry teams at the Four Seasons before going it alone, and Bakehouse has since grown into a small local chain. Croissants, hojicha doughnuts, and location-exclusive items fill the cases, making each outpost worth a separate visit.

  75. Rank 278. Kamcentre Roast Goose

    Cantonese Barbecue

Roast goose in a bowling alley is a sentence you don't expect to type, yet here we are. This no-frills Cantonese barbecue spot sits inside a sports club, all bright lights and zero ceremony, and it's run by descendants of the family behind the old Yung Kee institution. The goose arrives lacquered amber with properly gamey meat, and the char siu has the kind of charred, fatty crust that makes everything else on the table feel like a distraction.

  76. A pocket milk tea shop in Wan Chai that has quietly outrun the old cha chaan tengs it grew up alongside. What looks like a to-go counter from the street opens into a small maze of tables inside. The team developed a silk-smooth Hong Kong milk tea, and you'll often spot one of its tea masters still working the counter. Pair it with an egg sandwich in the morning or a pineapple bun thick with butter in the afternoon.

  78. Rank 278. Ser Wong Fun

    Cantonese

Snake soup in winter is practically a civic ritual in Hong Kong, and Ser Wong Fun is where residents have been warming up for as long as anyone can remember. The old-school Cantonese restaurant in Central draws a loyal crowd for its signature reptilian broth, but claypot rice with preserved sausage and pan-fried fish cakes with clam sauce keep the rest of the menu busy too. Bring a sweater, or just order another bowl.

  79. Rank 278. Shui Kee

    Food Truck

Folding tables set up along a sloping Central alleyway announce what kind of operation this is before you've even ordered. Shui Kee is a dai pai dong, a street-food stall, where steaming bowls of soup noodles arrive loaded with beef brisket, meatballs, or fresh offal, all cooked in a clear beef broth that's been going all day. Fresh beef offal is a rarity in the city now, and the difference from the frozen version is not subtle. Bring your balance.

  80. A cha chaan teng with its own bakery tucked into an ex-industrial stretch of Cheung Sha Wan, Sun Wah has been around forever and shows no signs of caring about its own reputation. The egg tarts have a crust that shatters properly and a custard center that wobbles when you look at it. Locals fill the place at all hours, which is the only endorsement that matters in a city that runs on lists.

  81. A cha chaan teng that turns into a cocktail bar after dark, Tai On occupies the old-school Hong Kong diner format and quietly rewires it. The yuenyeung, that classic milk-tea-coffee hybrid, arrives as a latte; egg tarts get a hojicha infusion; pasta comes with century egg and coriander. The room feels like a 1960s diner that went to culinary school and came back curious rather than pretentious.

  82. A street food counter in Yau Ma Tei where the curry fish balls are the whole point. The balls here are large and genuinely bouncy with fish, the curry runs deep and savory, and a drizzle of chile oil finishes the job. Cool down with steamed rice paper rolls dressed in hoisin and sesame. The aunties and uncles running the counter move at pace without ever losing the warmth, which is rarer at street stalls than it should be.

  83. Rank 298. Birdie

    Yakitori Japanese

Eighteen counter seats circle an open kitchen where skewers of thigh, wing, soft bone, liver, heart, and tsukune rotate over binchotan charcoal all night. Birdie is a yakitori bar on the ninth floor of H Code, loud and unhurried in the way a good izakaya tends to be. The chef cut his teeth at a respected Fukuoka yakitori house, and the chicken-forward menu shows it.

  84. Bamboo weaving and hibiscus motifs soften what is otherwise a very glass-and-steel dining room in Central's Welley Building. The kitchen merges Sichuan and Cantonese cooking, which sounds like a diplomatic compromise until you see how well chilli oil and roasted pepper sauce treat premium seafood. The chef brings two decades of training across Japan, France, and Italy to the Sichuan pantry. The original is in Chengdu, if the name didn't give it away.

  85. Rank 298. Clarence

    French

A French restaurant on the 25th floor where Olivier Elzer has spent years figuring out how to make classic cooking feel less like a project. Beef tartare and roasted yellow chicken arrive with all their soul intact, just without the heaviness that usually follows you home. The hot Camembert with honey is apparently non-negotiable, and the croffle with salted caramel quietly explains why the rest of the menu is so restrained.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
