The best places to eat and stay in India, according to the experts: the Forbes Travel Guide, the Michelin Guide, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. NÜWA comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Delhi and Mumbai.
More Less
Masque and Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The 50 close behind.

Bronze-detailed embroidered walls and 23-foot ceilings greet you in the lobby, which does a lot to signal what the next few days will look like. This Forbes Five Star hotel inside the City of Dreams complex takes its name from a Chinese mythological heroine and leans into that lineage, with contemporary art from well-known Chinese artists displayed throughout. Around 300 rooms and villas come with deep-soaking tubs and rain showers, and the Cotai Strip noise feels very far away.

Rank 2. Masque
Modern Indian
A ten-course tasting menu inside a converted textile mill in Mahalakshmi, where the whole project is an argument that Indian produce needs no outside help. The chef works with hyper-local, seasonal ingredients, and the kitchen runs an R&D lab on site where flavors are stress-tested before they reach the dining room. Ranked #15 on Asia's 50 Best and #68 on The World's 50 Best, with the 2026 Art of Hospitality Award added for good measure.

The Florentine red dome and latticework facade overlooking the Gateway of India make the Taj Mahal Palace unmistakable from the harbor. It's a grand luxury hotel with two personalities: the Heritage Wing runs to four-poster beds, onyx columns, and hand-knotted carpets, while the Tower Wing goes sleek and modern with Arabian Sea views. Ranked 38th on the World's 50 Best Hotels list, it's been hosting royalty and film stars for as long as anyone can remember.

A pre-arrival consultation kicks things off before you've even packed a bag, which tells you everything about the register of this Forbes Five Star wellness resort on its own private Maldivian island. The whole stay is organized around four pillars, mind, microbiome, skin, and energy, with naturopaths and movement specialists mapping out a program built specifically for you. The ocean is still there whenever you want it.

A thousand trees were preserved during construction, so the island still feels genuinely wild, flowers and all. This Forbes Five Star resort on its own private Maldivian island was designed by Autoban, whose teak panels and terrazzo floors borrow quietly from across Asia. The villas read luxurious without feeling like a stage set, and the service is warm rather than ceremonial. Chair sculptures scattered around the grounds nod to the Dhivehi word the resort is named for.

Rank 7. NAAR
Himalayan Indian
Getting to Naar involves mountain roads steep enough to make you question your choices, but that's the point. Chef Prateek Sadhu, who came up through Alinea and Le Bernardin before co-founding Masque in Mumbai, built this Himalayan tasting menu restaurant around the idea that Kashmir and its neighbors constitute a culinary world most people have never visited. Ingredients are hyperlocal, the six-season calendar shapes the menu, and the views do the rest. It holds a spot on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list.

The menu bounces from Korean barbecue tacos to lobster raviolo to shrimp dumplings without apology, and somehow it holds together. The Table is a casual fine-dining room in Colaba that's been feeding Mumbaikars forever, drawing a crowd that runs from suits to Bollywood without much fuss about the gap. The pasta and risotto section alone is suspiciously long. It holds a spot on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list.

The St. Regis Mumbai occupies the city's tallest building in Lower Parel, which puts it squarely between the energy of Bandra and the old mercantile gravity of Fort. It's a Forbes Four Star luxury hotel, and it leans into the designation with wide staircases, art installations on every floor, and rooms that feel more like a generous apartment than a pit stop. The Palladium mall is right next door for anyone who needs retail therapy after a long flight.

Japanese
The cold palak paneer is plated to look like Mount Fuji, which tells you everything about the mood here. INJA is a fine dining restaurant inside The Manor Hotel that folds Indian and Japanese cooking into each other with a straight face and a good sense of humor. Kachori gets salmon caviar, cauliflower street food becomes a maki roll. Cocktails lean into the same playful logic. It earned a spot on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list.

At the tip of Marine Drive, where the Queen's Necklace curves into the Arabian Sea, this luxury hotel earns its Nariman Point address. Nearly 300 rooms keep things spare and tall-ceilinged, the air carrying a faint scent of vetiver, and the views at night, when the promenade lights up in a long arc, make the city feel curated rather than chaotic. A Forbes Four Star property, and a convincing argument for South Mumbai over the northern neighborhoods.

The veranda and public rooms do the heavy lifting here, which is exactly how it should be at a grand old colonial hotel. Built in the 1930s by a Lutyens associate, the Imperial has been New Delhi's benchmark for old-world elegance ever since. Rooms run from very-English traditional to Art Deco, all with marble bathrooms and Porthault linens. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys.

Rooms run genuinely large even by Delhi standards, with grand beds, mirror televisions in the bathrooms, and views that cover real ground. A wellness resort tucked into a sal forest in the Himalayan foothills, where the intake process starts weeks before you arrive, when the team begins mapping your Ayurvedic dosha from home. The 21-acre estate is all low, symmetrical pavilions folded into the trees, and your stay, which runs a minimum of five nights, is fully programmed: yoga, treatments, guided nutrition, and therapeutic seasonal meals, all built around you.

Suites on the upper floors come with private plunge pools on the balcony, which sets the tone for this grand luxury hotel sitting squarely in Lutyens' Delhi, near Humayun's Tomb and the quiet estates of government. The courtyard pool is the social heart of the place, with a poolside cafe doing Thai food and cocktails beside it. Two bars, an Italian restaurant, and a globe-spanning dining room round things out. Pale stone pavilions rise from the Aravalli Hills on grounds that were once a staging post for royal tiger hunts, which sets the mood before you've unpacked. Amanbagh is a small luxury resort, 37 rooms and quiet courtyards with reflecting pools, Mughal in its bones but contemporary in its comforts. The organic garden feeds the kitchen, the spa runs Ayurvedic therapies, and the pace is firmly set to slow. It landed on the World's 50 Best Hotels list, which the tranquility makes easy to believe.

Set on 30 acres of gardens along Lake Pichola, The Oberoi Udaivilas is a luxury resort built to look like it was always a palace. Landscape architect Bill Bensley designed the grounds, threading them with courtyards, fountains, and reflective pools that mirror the city's own floating geometry. Many rooms open onto private terraces or infinity pools overlooking the lake. The restaurants draw on centuries-old Rajasthani recipes, which is either romantic or a very long wine list, depending on your mood.

Built as a royal summer retreat and later commandeered by both the Taj group and a Bond film crew, this is a full-service luxury hotel where old-world opulence and central air conditioning coexist without apology. Rooms facing the courtyard lily pond are lovely; those facing the lake are better. The Michelin Guide awarded it 3 Keys.

Ten tented suites in leopard country against the Aravalli range: Suján Jawai makes a fairly compelling case that roughing it was always a relative term. This conservation camp in Rajasthan keeps its footprint small and its interiors surprisingly contemporary, with open verandas for watching the landscape do its thing. Twice-daily safaris with expert guides are the anchor, though birding, Rabari tribe walks, and temple visits fill the hours between. It holds 2 Michelin Keys and a spot on the World's 50 Best Hotels list.

A 21-acre private island on Udai Sagar Lake, ringed by the Aravalli Hills and pointed squarely at Udaipur's historic palace skyline. This 137-room resort leans into Rajasthan's Indo-Saracenic architecture, all domed pavilions and carved stone colonnades, with lakeside suites that open onto the water. The Raffles Butler program means someone is quietly solving problems you haven't had yet, from breakfast by the shore to Ayurvedic spa arrangements.

A 14th-century Rajasthani fort converted into a 48-suite luxury resort, with the spa occupying what was once the women's palace and the dining room drawing from its own gardens and nearby farms. The Aravalli Hills frame the view beyond the village walls, and the place runs at a pace set by shaded verandas rather than schedules. Ranthambore is close enough to make the surrounding wilderness feel like part of the stay, not an optional detour.

A moat of reflecting pools rings this luxury hotel in Gurgaon's business district, lit by candles after dark in a way that makes "corporate address" sound like an undersell. The Oberoi group built it new rather than converting a palace, but the butler service, bench showers, and rainforest landscaping suggest the palace ambition was always the point. This is a luxury hotel on Marine Drive, the art deco seafront that South Mumbai was built to show off. The Dome rooftop bar draws its own crowd, and Wankhede Stadium, where cricket reaches a fever pitch, is a short walk away.

The Jungle Bar mixes cocktails from secret recipes, and nobody seems to be in a hurry to ask what's in them. This tented safari camp on the edge of Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve, a Michelin Key property, was founded by wildlife filmmakers, and that lineage shows: game drives, birding, and the campfire feel more like the point than the amenities. Nine canvas suites come with brass bathtubs and rosewood furniture, and the organic gardens supply the dining tent.

The architect supposedly arrived by boat after construction finished, saw the hotel had been built facing the wrong way, and threw himself overboard. Whether that's apocryphal or not, the "back" of this grand heritage hotel now faces the harbor, meaning more rooms catch the view. The Heritage Wing has the history and the personality; the Tower Wing is newer and considerably calmer. Five restaurants, three bars, and a Michelin Key.

A tree-lined driveway opens onto a lobby filled with red roses, a stepped fountain, and the scent of lemongrass, which functions as a quiet argument against everything Mumbai is doing just outside the gates. The Leela is a luxury hotel sitting minutes from the international airport, and it leans hard into the serene-retreat idea: hushed, fragrant, and conspicuously gentler than the city it technically occupies.

A 20th-century mansion from the last days of the Raj, furnished with teak chairs and old gramophones, houses one of Kolkata's most serious Bengali restaurants. The cooking spans classic and contemporary, and the room earns its period feel without tipping into theme-park territory. Staff in crisp white uniforms tend to two floors of dining rooms and a rooftop above. A Discovery listing from The 50.

A championship golf course rolled across 22 acres of Nandi Hills sets the tone for this sprawling resort outside Bengaluru, where the Deccan plateau does most of the heavy lifting on ambiance. The 301 rooms come with balconies over the fairways, marble bathrooms, and those JW mattresses that make checkout feel slightly cruel. A lakeside spa, lagoon pool, and bowling alley mean families and honeymooners somehow coexist without either group feeling shortchanged.

A boutique hotel practically in the shadow of Mehrangarh Fort, with the sandstone ramparts looming over the pool cabanas in a way that makes daytime heat feel almost worth it. The architecture pulls off something genuinely tricky: the exterior reads as old walled city, the interior as crisp modern design, and neither half feels like a compromise. Most rooms look straight up at the fort, which sets an unreasonable standard for a window view.

The Maharaja's family still lives here, which is either charming or slightly awkward depending on your tolerance for sharing a postcode with royalty. The Taj-managed hotel wing occupies sixty-four rooms inside a working palace, and unlike the many Indian hotels pretending to that fantasy, this one doesn't have to pretend. The Art Deco bones are the tell: younger than its peers, and committed to it, with a personality that outlasts the marble.

A Hong Kong group bringing East Asian cool to Delhi's government district, this 320-room high-rise trades colonial grandeur for clean modern lines and sleek Asian-inspired furnishings. Rooms come fully loaded, and the upper-floor Horizon Club adds a private lounge and views over the city. A spa, pool, and a whisky-and-cigar bar round things out, making it the kind of hotel that knows exactly what a road-weary executive needs by 9pm.

The manicured lawns and gazebos here look much as they did when the hotel first opened, and no one seems in a hurry to change that. This is a grande dame New Delhi hotel with parquet floors, marble bathrooms, and four-poster beds, anchored by a freeform pool ringed in white cabanas. An old-fashioned bakery handles chocolate cake; the bar pours vodka and hosts nightly jazz. Spanish food by candlelight on the terrace rounds out a place that has aged with quiet confidence.

Twelve rooms, two restaurants, and a bar that pulls in Delhi locals who have no particular reason to be in a hotel, which tells you something about the ambiance here. The Manor is a boutique hotel tucked into the leafy calm of Friends Colony, and after a careful renovation it wears that calm like it was purpose-built yesterday. Gardens, an Ayurvedic spa, an art gallery cycling through new work, all of it unhurried in a city that rarely is.

Mahogany-paneled interiors and a clubby hush set this luxury hotel apart from the standard glass-and-marble business property. It sits just off the Bay of Bengal in Chennai's MRC Nagar, and the guest rooms run large even by the standards of a place clearly courting corporate travelers, with the upper suites pulling in sea views. An 18th-century Rajasthani palace where the original stone facade gives way to all-white marble suites inlaid with malachite and lapis lazuli, a contrast so deliberate it feels like a provocation. This Michelin Key luxury resort sits between Udaipur and the Jain temples of Eklingji, with a spa, heated pool, and a restaurant mixing Indian and European traditions. Breakfast arrives in a historic art gallery, which sets the tone for a stay at this heritage hotel in Patiāla. The Michelin Key-holding property sits on the grounds of a royal complex, and the rooms, lined in inlaid Rajasthani marble and furnished with heritage pieces, run generously large even by maharaja standards. The turquoise-tiled courtyard pool faces a domed fortress, and rare frescoes line the walls. Princely is not hyperbole here; it's the literal backstory.

Every suite faces the Aravali mountains, and the palette running through this modern luxury resort pulls from gemstones and the geometric forms of Jaipur's ancient Jantar Mantar observatory. Architects drew the whole concept from the Nav Ratn, nine cosmologically significant gems, so the design has a mythology behind it rather than just a mood board. The villas add private plunge pools. Fortress walls gleam white after dark, enclosing an 18th-century Hindu temple rising from a lotus pond, and the whole scene looks less like a hotel than a painting someone decided to inhabit. This Jaipur resort holds a Michelin Key and leans hard into fantasy, with five staff per guest, silk-roofed tents fitted with claw-foot tubs and air conditioning, and candlelit dinners on handmade linen. The 25 tents here are technically camping the way a maharaja's palace is technically a house. Nine rooms sit just outside Jaipur, giving this small hotel the feel of a country estate that got very lost on its way from Tuscany. The collaboration between an Italian-Swiss hotelier and a Dutch designer produced something unexpected: Rajasthani architecture turned up to full saturation, every surface a Technicolor fantasy. A pool, spa, garden pavilion, and library keep things calm between the color. The restaurant runs Italian alongside Rajasthani, which is exactly as interesting as it sounds. It holds a Michelin Key.

Near the Bandra-Kurla business corridor and a short hop from the airport, this sprawling modern hotel bills itself as a "lifestyle complex," which is fair: four restaurants, a spa, and an on-site mall mean you could theoretically never leave.
