Cuisines

  1. Three A-frame cabins cling to the outermost crags of Karmøy, each angled to pull in 180 degrees of North Sea. Floor-to-ceiling glass at the front, roof glazing above, wood-burning stove below, loft bed somewhere overhead. Cabin Helga is step-free and nearly drive-to-the-door; Håkon surveys Hemnessanden beach to the north; Hagbart faces south toward Utsira. Skudeneshavn's white harbor is eight minutes away, which matters less once a storm rolls in and the sea starts foaming against the rocks.

  2. Converted fisherman's cottages right on the water in Ballstad, a working village midway through the Lofoten archipelago. Hattvika Lodge arranges everything from aurora chases in winter to midnight sun kayaking in summer, working directly with local guides and fishers, so guests spend less time planning and more time outside. The jagged peaks rising behind the harbor make a strong argument for the hillside cabins.

  3. Red stilted "rorbuer" still line the harbor at Nusfjord, a fishing village on the southern Lofoten coast where locals live alongside guests in cabins that once sheltered cod fishermen. The resort converts many into lodgings with original timbers and quiet contemporary touches, while a handful remain unmodified since the 1890s, running water included in what they've left out. It's as close as you'll get to sleeping inside a working piece of Norwegian coastal history.

  4. Rank 104. Girotondo

    Pizzeria

Four long marble tables with benches are the whole room, and the odds are good you'll be seated next to a stranger within minutes. This family-run pizzeria sits just off Youngstorget square, reached through the Håndslag bar downstairs, and the setup invites the kind of communal dinner that Norwegians don't usually plan for. The dough comes from a sourdough starter that's been fed for decades, and the menu keeps things short and Italian.

  5. Rank 104. Mamma Pizza

    Pizzeria

Long-leavened dough with a low, well-developed crust is the through line at this casual Italian pizza and pasta spot in central Oslo. The vibe is warm and informal, somewhere between a neighborhood trattoria and a contemporary osteria, with a menu that wanders happily from classic pizzas to fresh pasta and Italian wine. Service runs friendly, if occasionally brisk when the room fills up, which it tends to do.

  6. Rank 104. Vinoteket

    Modern Pizzeria

A wine-forward pizza restaurant in the Solli Plass neighborhood, where the cellar is taken as seriously as the dough. The menu runs three directions: bold modern pies, large alla pala slabs meant for sharing, and Scandinavian riffs on classics topped with Norwegian scallops and Jerusalem artichoke puree. The wine list covers most of the world's major regions, and the staff actually know it.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
