The Best Seafood in Norway

Sections

The best seafood in Norway, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, the White Guide, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. RE-NAA comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Oslo and Stavanger.

More Less

Under and Credo hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the White Guide next.

  1. Rank 1. RE-NAA

    Seafood

The open kitchen sits in the center of the room, so the chefs are as much a part of the dining experience as the food itself. This is fine dining built around the Norwegian coastline, where Sven Erik Renaa runs a roughly 20-course tasting menu that keeps circling back to local fish and shellfish. The precision here is quiet and confident, never showy. RE-NAA holds three Michelin stars.

  2. Rank 2. Under

    Modern Seafood

The dining room sits five meters below the surface of the North Sea, with panoramic windows looking out into open water. You descend an oak-and-steel staircase to get there, which sets the mood before a single dish arrives. Under is a Michelin-starred tasting menu restaurant built around the seasonal seafood just outside the glass, handled with the kind of restraint that trusts the langoustine to do the talking.

  3. Rank 3. Credo

    Seafood

The dining room sits inside the contemporary wing of the National Library, surrounded by Emanuel Vigeland frescoes, which is either the grandest possible setting for a creative tasting menu or a gentle reminder that you're eating near things you can't touch. Chef Heidi Bjerkan holds a Michelin star here, and her cooking tracks Norwegian seasons closely, first rhubarb, peak lamb, whatever the coast is giving up that week.

  4. Rank 4. Eero

    Seafood

Named for the architect who designed the building, this seafood tasting-menu restaurant occupies the top floor of the old American Embassy, with a wrap-around terrace that splits its views between the Oslofjord and the Royal Palace gardens. The kitchen runs a fin-to-gill philosophy over a wood-fired oven, so cod might appear as a snack, then return as belly on the bone with its own liver and roe. Dishes arrive all at once, some of them family-style.

  5. A vast three-room seafood restaurant on the Tjuvholmen waterfront, with a terrace close enough to the water that you feel slightly guilty ordering the lobster. The name translates as "Sea Store," and they commit to the premise: pick from a live crab and lobster tank, pull up to the shellfish bar, or order a platter of shellfish landed at the local dock. The lounge bar handles the inevitable Norwegian weather with style.

  6. Rank 4. Tollbua

    Seafood

Banquettes, a central bar, exposed ducting, and terrazzo floors set the tone at this large waterfront brasserie on the Brattøra quay. The menu runs four or six courses, leaning hard into Norwegian seafood, skrei cod when the season allows, scallops dressed with whatever the coast provides. It's the kind of place that fills up fast and sounds like it, which is more or less the point.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
