The best seafood in Turkey, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and The 50 have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Partal Kardeşler Balık Restorant comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Istanbul and Bodrum.

More Less

AQUA and AZUR hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The 50 next.

Cuisines

  1. Tail fins of oversized fish hang from the ceiling as a casual statement of intent at this family-run seafood grill on the Urla coast. The uncle fishes, the father works the grill, the mother handles the mezze, and the son runs the floor, which means everyone is exactly where they should be. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and the shimmering sea visible from your table explains why.

  2. Rank 2. AQUA

    Seafood

The glass-fronted dining room sits right at the water's edge inside the Four Seasons Bosphorus, with the strait and its bridge filling the windows. It's a seafood restaurant that moves between Mediterranean staples, grilled fish, and modern Asian preparations, with caviar and oysters for anyone who wants to lean into the occasion. The view does a lot of the heavy lifting, and the kitchen seems to know it, sending out food that's rich enough to hold the room's attention anyway.

  3. Rank 2. AZUR

    Mediterranean Turkish Seafood

The raw seafood display stops you before you've even sat down, and on the Bosphorus, that's saying something. AZUR is a chic waterfront seafood restaurant in Yeniköy where the kitchen moves between Turkish and Mediterranean without making a fuss about it, landing on things like tuna tartare with stracciatella or fish straight off the plancha. The panoramic view does its job too, and the servers are genuinely helpful navigating the menu.

  4. Rank 2. Balıkçı Kahraman

    Turkish Seafood

The grilled turbot is the house speciality, and everything else on the table, from fish kokoreç to buttery tuna lakerda made with house olive oil, follows the same quietly serious logic. This is a cosy, old-school Turkish seafood spot tucked into the fishing village of Rumeli Kavağı at the far northern reach of the Bosphorus, far enough from the tourist circuit that getting there feels like the point.

  5. Rank 2. Barbarossa

    Seafood Mediterranean

The outdoor kitchen at this seafood restaurant inside Bodrum's Caresse resort lets you watch the cooking unfold while cocktails appear and chill-out music drifts over the water. The menu leans into Greek and Italian coastal traditions, with deep-fried squid and grilled sea bass served without ceremony. Moored yachts bob in the view, the pool is right there, and the crowd dresses accordingly. Book a poolside table if you can.

  6. The refrigerated display counter at the front tells you everything before you sit down: this is a no-frills seafood restaurant on the Izmir waterfront, where the charcoal grill runs hot all day. Mezze arrive fresh, then the kitchen sends out whatever looked good on ice, flame-grilled with the kind of confidence that doesn't need a sauce. The quayside strip has no shortage of fish restaurants, and this one earns its place quietly.

  7. A seafood restaurant on the Küçükyalı waterfront where the mezze fridge does most of the selling, and the waiter talks you through it like he means it. The kitchen cooks your fish to order, simply and without fuss, letting whatever came off the boat that morning carry the meal. Sun, sea breeze, and a plate of grilled sea bass: it's the kind of lunch that makes Istanbul's traffic feel like someone else's problem.

  8. Rank 2. Eleos Yeşilköy

    Greek Seafood

A few streets from the Yeşilköy marina, this seafood restaurant feels like a Greek tavern that wandered across the Aegean and decided to stay. The terrace catches a breeze, the catch of the day sits on ice at the front, and the menu runs through meze and simply prepared fish in a neighborhood that already has the loose rhythm of a seaside resort. Unpretentious is doing real work here, in the best way a word can.

  9. Paintings cover the walls, the marina fills the windows, and the fish comes straight from the display fridge, prepared however you like. This old-school seafood restaurant on the Bosphorus shore has been a Tarabya fixture forever, the kind of place where you start with mezze, point at the catch, and let the kitchen handle the rest. Ask for a table upstairs, where the views justify the trip up the stairs on their own.

  10. Rank 2. Orfoz

    Seafood

A family-run seafood restaurant on a bay in Bodrum, where the brothers who own it also fish it, which explains a lot. The cooking is plant-forward alongside the seafood, the supply chain is almost comically short, and the wine list, which includes a few of their own labels, reads like a side project that got out of hand. The Michelin Guide has its eye on it.

    The awards

  11. Rank 2. Orkide Balık

    Turkish Seafood

A seafood restaurant on the Göltürkbükü waterfront where the terrace sits under tall trees close enough to the shore that the setting does half the work. The kitchen keeps things unfussy, letting the day's fish speak for itself, and the cold mezze counter near the entrance is worth circling before you sit. Cold baklava finishes things on a note that sounds wrong until it isn't. The Michelin Guide has selected it.

    The awards

  12. Crates of the day's catch are stacked by the entrance, and a row of tanks holds king crabs and lobsters that haven't been told what's coming. This is a traditional seafood restaurant on the Bosphorus in Kuruçeşme, where you pick your fish and name your method, grilled, steamed, meunière, tandoori, and the kitchen obliges. The waterfront terrace puts boats drifting past on the Strait directly in view, which makes it very easy to convince yourself you're on holiday.

    The awards

  13. A glass pavilion right on the Bosphorus, where the view competes hard with the food and neither quite wins. This is a classic Istanbul seafood restaurant: mezze arrive at the table without your asking, then you walk up and choose your fish and tell them how you want it cooked. The kitchen keeps things clean and direct, letting the fish do the talking. Boats drift past the window the whole time, which makes it easy to lose an entire afternoon.

    The awards

  14. Rank 2. Sait

    Seafood

The day's catch sits on ice near the entrance, which is the most direct menu a seafood restaurant can offer. Sait is a family-run spot on Yalıkavak's marina, where the terrace looks out over yachts that have no business being this glamorous. The cooking leans into home-style generosity, sharing plates of fish and seafood built around whatever came in that morning, with enough colour on every plate to make you forget you ordered too much.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
