  3. The scent of braised pork hits you before you find the stall number. What started as a night market cart has been around forever and grown into a proper sit-down spot in Huaxi Street, bright and clean inside. The draw is braised pork rice, the sauce glossy and dark, sweet-savory and sticky in the best sense. Stewed cabbage cuts through it neatly. The Michelin Bib Gourmand crowd knows what they're doing ordering nothing else.

  8. Over 600 original works of art are woven into the structure of this sleek urban hotel in Xinyi, curated by a former symphony flutist, which tells you something about the ambitions at play here. Rooms run to silk velvet robes and Swedish specialty mattresses; suites add butler service and skyline views. A sixth-floor garden, a Mediterranean restaurant, spa, and heated outdoor pool round things out. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

  9. Dark wood, crisp white walls, and a gilded mirror or two define the look here, a luxury hotel in Taipei that describes its aesthetic as neo-classicism, though "enthusiastic Francophile" also covers it. Nearly 300 rooms come with private balconies, some with real skyline views. Downstairs, the dining options span Cantonese dim sum to a Moroccan-inspired bar, which is either confusing or charming depending on how you feel about commitment.

  11. Floor-to-ceiling glass frames the Tamsui River from most rooms, which is a better morning view than you'd expect from a hotel sitting at the edge of Ximending's busiest stretch. Dark wood paneling and Simmons mattresses inside, Byredo amenities in the bathroom, and minibars that don't charge you to open them. Temples, night markets, and the full Ximending chaos are seconds from the lobby door, though the river keeps things calmer than the streets suggest.

  12. Rank 112. Bar Otani

    Japanese Cocktail Bar

Black walls and no music mean the only sounds in this cocktail bar are ice cracking in a shaker and the low hum of a freezer, which turns out to be the right soundtrack. Tucked inside an old office building off Zhongshan North Road, it runs on the Japanese model where the bartender reads your mood and builds something around it. Small, dark, and unhurried, it suits lone drinkers best.

  13. The lobby ceiling at Grand HiLai Taipei climbs high enough to make you forget you're in a business hotel, which is probably the point. Steel, glass, and neon on the outside give way to marble, mirrors, and curved neo-Deco furnishings that actually invite sitting down. It's in Nangang, Taipei's quieter eastern flank, which suits the crowd here: polished, purposeful, equally comfortable filing expense reports or planning a hike into the hills.

  15. Five rooms, five private geothermal baths, and a former wine cellar that still earns its keep. Villa 32 is a small modernist retreat in Beitou where hot-spring access comes built into the room, not offered as an add-on. Suites run from tatami-and-sliding-screen Japanese style to plush Western rooms, and the courtyard dining quietly suggests that whoever lived here before had very good taste. No guests under 16, which tells you most of what you need to know about the mood.

  20. The oven sits dead center in the room, so you watch the pizza makers the whole time, which turns out to be half the point. This is a compact Neapolitan-style pizzeria, eight or ten wooden tables, big windows, and a menu that stays almost entirely focused on pizza, red or white, plus a few focaccias. The dough has real structure and a properly blistered crust. Ranked on 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific, and reservations are worth booking ahead.

  22. A specialty coffee shop on Dihua Street, one of Taipei's oldest commercial strips, where the narrow shophouse format and the smell of roasting beans compete for your attention. The team roasts in-house and pours to order, which means you'll wait a little and won't mind. Relaxed enough that regulars spread out with laptops and books and nobody rushes them along.

  26. Rank 119. Brisé

    Contemporary French

An open kitchen in a sleek modern room, where contemporary French cooking quietly folds Asian ingredients into the kind of seasonal menu that changes every few months and makes last season feel like a different restaurant. The chef's touch is restrained on the plate but precise underneath, and the weekday lunch set is a sensible way in. Tucked down a lane in Zhongshan, it's a Michelin Guide selection that rewards a little effort to find.

    Contemporary French

Jean-François Piège's first restaurant outside France sits inside a luxury department store, which sounds like a punchline until the food arrives. This contemporary French tasting room runs seasonal menus that pull hits from Piège's Paris restaurants and fold in local Taiwanese ingredients along the way. The wild raspberry soufflé with pistachio ice cream has its own reputation. Dress up; Bellavita is that kind of building.

  34. Rank 119. Dasuke

    Contemporary Japanese

Counter seating, dimmed lighting, and a sake list deep enough to require tasting notes set the tone at this intimate omakase spot in Da'an. The kitchen draws on Niigata flavors and locally sourced ingredients, and the menu lands somewhere between Japanese tradition and something harder to categorize, including a deep-fried patty of beef and sashimi served in a house bun, which is either an act of genius or a dare, possibly both.

    Yakitori Japanese

The open kitchen runs loud and hot, with flames climbing high enough to make the modern room feel like an old Tokyo alley. Fumée is a yakitori restaurant inside the Regent Hotel, running two nightly seatings through a set tasting menu with an optional sake pairing. It's the sister spot to an Osaka original, and the sourcing shows in the skewers. Sleek space, serious smoke.

  58. A Japanese chef running a contemporary French kitchen on the second floor of a Taipei hotel sounds like a setup, but the seasonally shifting millefeuille and seafood-forward menus built around local teas and spices make a quiet case for the combination. The room is understated to the point of calm, and both wine and tea sommeliers are on hand, which does rather raise the bar for your next dinner party.

  62. Rank 119. Rong Ju

    Cantonese

Faux red brick overhead gives the dining room the feel of a modern Chinese home, warm without being heavy. This is a Cantonese set-menu restaurant inside the Capella hotel, where the kitchen layers contemporary touches onto the classics, truffle finding its way into the dim sum, sakura ebi into the stir-fried cabbage. The tea selection is curated to pair with the meal, which is the kind of detail that separates a thoughtful kitchen from a merely competent one.

  68. Miaoli Hakkanese-style glutinous rice balls are the whole point here, stuffed with pork and vegetables and made from year-old round-grain sticky rice for that particular chewy pull. It's a casual counter spot that's been around forever, with a second-generation owner still running the same recipe his mother built the place on. The scallion oil chicken drumsticks have their own following. Check social media before you go, because the hours are their own puzzle.

  91. About an hour outside Taipei, this ryokan-style resort sits inside the Wulai Mountains, where rooms have private hot spring baths and floor-to-ceiling windows aimed at the river. The public bathhouse runs to steam room, sauna, outdoor pool, and hydrotherapy pool, and mornings can start with Tai Chi if you'd like to feel very virtuous before lunch. A waterfall hike is also on offer, for those who need a reason to leave the bath.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
