The 100 Best Places in Canada

The best places in Canada, according to the experts: The 50, The Pinnacle Guide, and Difford's Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Bar Pompette comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Toronto and Vancouver.

More Less

Alo and The Hazelton Hotel Toronto hold the next two places. The 50 shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the Forbes Travel Guide close behind.

Drink + Stay + Do, change section

Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. Rank 1. Bar Pompette

    French Cocktail Bar

Bentwood chairs, a marble bar, and jazz on Sundays give this College Street cocktail bar the plausible deniability of a Parisian café. The drinks are where things get interesting: curry leaf and rum, cognac stirred with masala chai, combinations that sound like a dare and drink like they were inevitable. North America's 50 Best Bars places it at number eight, and the hospitality matches the ambition. The garden patio fills up fast.

  2. Rank 2. Alo

    French

The chef's counter overlooking the kitchen is the seat to book at this sleek, third-floor tasting menu restaurant from Patrick Kriss. Six or ten courses move between European and Asian sensibilities without announcing the pivot each time. The bar takes walk-ins and treats them accordingly. A Michelin star sits on the shelf. Somehow the room, all burgundy and diffused light, never tips into solemnity.

  3. Yabu Pushelberg designed the interiors, and the suites average six hundred square feet, which tells you where this boutique hotel sits on the spectrum. The Hazelton is Yorkville's idea of a grand hotel, all heated bathroom floors, a private screening room that fills up during film festival season, and a lobby that skews Gatsby without apologizing for it. Forbes Five Star and two Michelin Keys. Celebrities apparently appreciate the discretion, though the bar patio is very much the opposite.

    The awards

  4. A 40-ton metal tree outside sets the tone: nature and city, held in deliberate tension. This Forbes Five Star, Michelin Key hotel sits in Toronto's financial district but reads more like a sanctuary, with carved wooden screens, cascading waterfalls, and rooms so generous that the standard category runs larger than most hotels' suites. The fifth-floor spa has a hammam and a 20-meter pool with floor-to-ceiling views over the city below.

    The awards

  5. The Four Seasons brand started in Toronto, so the Yorkville flagship carries a certain pressure to get things right. This glass tower hotel earns its Forbes Five Star with quietly luxurious rooms recently renovated to nod at the Canadian landscape, a Daniel Boulud restaurant on site, and service that reportedly sets the standard for every other property in the chain, which is either reassuring or a lot to live up to, depending on your mood.

    The awards

  6. The saltwater infinity pool sits high enough to make the whole city feel like a backdrop, which gives you a sense of the register this Forbes Five Star hotel is operating in. Classic St. Regis butler service, suites that feel more like borrowed condos than hotel rooms, and a spa that hands you champagne after your treatment. Louix Louis on the 31st floor and the Astor Lounge keep guests from ever needing to go far.

  7. A Bocci light sculpture of 480 illuminated leaves greets you at the door, which sets the tone for a Forbes Five Star hotel that takes its art program as seriously as its harbor views. Rooms lean Fairmont-traditional with marble bathrooms and Stearns & Foster beds, while the waterfront tower frames Stanley Park and the North Shore mountains in one sweep. Several restaurants and bars on site, including Vancouver's first fully sustainable sushi bar.

  8. Rank 8. Library Bar

    Cocktail Bar

Tableside martinis have been a feature of this jewel-toned, Art Deco cocktail bar inside the Fairmont Royal York for longer than most regulars have been alive. The cocktail menu takes its plot points from Michael Ondaatje's Toronto novel "In the Skin of a Lion," so drinks arrive with actual literary backstory, which is either charming or a lot, depending on your mood. North America's 50 Best Bars ranked it nineteenth on the 2026 list.

  12. An 85-foot bell tower anchors this monastic winery complex perched above the Okanagan Valley, where the architecture alone draws as many visitors as the wine. Tours run through dramatic underground cellars, and tastings can be as casual or elaborate as you like, from a quick pour in the wine shop to a four-course meal in the Chagall Room. The estate ranks among the World's 50 Best Vineyards, which feels about right once you're standing in the courtyard looking out over Lake Okanagan.

  13. Rank 13. The Keefer Bar

    Chinese Cocktail Bar

Backlit anatomical illustrations and a menu titled "Prescriptions and Antidotes" set the tone at this Chinatown cocktail bar, where traditional Chinese medicine drives the drink program. Bamboo liqueur, motherwort, and tofu turn up alongside baijiu and rum in combinations that shouldn't work but do. The ice is carved in-house, the DJs are good, and North America's 50 Best Bars has it at number seven.

  14. Rank 14. Prophecy

    Cocktail Bar

The basement of Hotel Georgia has cycled through a jazz bar, a techno club, and a medieval pub before landing here, which feels like an upgrade for everyone involved. Prophecy is a cocktail bar with serious intentions: drinks that look effortless and take months to develop, a mood-coded menu, and digital art shifting on the walls. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list. Come dressed; this one earns the low lighting.

  15. The bar at Botanist sits just inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim, intimate and posh enough that dressing up feels like the point. This is fine dining with a serious cocktail program, and the drinks lean into a nature-obsessed identity, including a glass-fronted lab where the team produces things like a martini built with kombu and sea asparagus. North America's 50 Best Bars placed it at number 38. The kitchen behind it runs hyper-local West Coast tasting menus alongside à la carte.

  16. Marlene Dietrich once checked in here with forty suitcases, which sets the tone nicely. The Rosewood Hotel Georgia is a grand downtown Vancouver hotel that has been around forever, and its dark-wood lobby still carries that old Hollywood weight. Rooms run to Italian linens, heated bathroom floors, and Bose systems; the top suites add private rooftop plunge pools. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys, and it holds a Forbes Four Star.

    The awards

  17. Rank 17. Suyo

    Peruvian

The whitewashed facade on Main Street gives nothing away, but inside, tall tropical plants and plush seating set the mood for modern Peruvian fine dining done without a trace of fuss. The kitchen runs citrus-bright ceviches and tiraditos alongside bolder, earthier plates, and the bar program is the kind that earns its own reputation. A Michelin Selected restaurant with a AAA Four Diamond rating.

  18. Rank 18. The Cloakroom

    Cocktail Bar

Hidden behind a menswear shop in a grand old Golden Square Mile building, this 25-seat cocktail bar operates on the tailor's principle: no menu, just a conversation about what you feel like, followed by something made precisely for you. The bar team draws on a deep house library of amari, liqueurs, and tinctures alongside vintage spirits to put it together. Canada's 100 Best named it the top bar in the country in 2026.

  19. Rank 19. Civil Works

    Cocktail Bar

The cocktail menu arrives as a fabric-swatch book, sourced from a textile shop up the street, which tells you exactly the kind of cocktail bar this is. Each drink comes tethered to a chapter of Toronto history, wars and labour movements and immigration woven into the tasting notes. It lands on North America's 50 Best Bars list, and the ambition never crowds out the fun: they also do craft-cocktail Jell-O shots, which is the right call.

  20. Rooms at the Park Hyatt run from large to genuinely enormous, with skyline views that remind you exactly where you are in the city. This is a full-service luxury hotel at Bloor and Avenue Road, steps from the ROM and the theater district, and it plays its role without apology: feather beds, a proper spa, a rooftop bar, and a restaurant doing upscale Canadian cuisine. It holds a Michelin Key and a Forbes Four Star.

    The awards

  21. A dark glass tower above the Golden Square Mile, with Marcus Samuelsson running the food and a Guerlain spa waiting when the city wears you out. The hotel leans hard into a boudoir-meets-enchanted-forest aesthetic, all pink hues, velour, and a wraparound marble bar that makes leaving feel slightly irresponsible. Private residences on the upper floors mean some guests never actually leave, which tracks.

  22. Glittery couches, a backbar stacked with hard-to-find agave and sugar-cane spirits, and DJs on weekends make the setup clear before the first drink arrives. This is a cocktail bar that takes its mixing seriously, with odd, exciting combinations sitting alongside mastery of the classics. The kitchen turns out proper bar food, too. North America's 50 Best Bars has it listed, and the crowd skews local, which is usually the better sign.

  23. The green copper roof has been a downtown Vancouver landmark forever, and the stone façade still holds its own against the glass towers that have since crowded in. This grande dame hotel sits in the center of it all, walking distance from Gastown and the waterfront, with Art Deco detailing in the rooms and an afternoon tea that feels genuinely unhurried. A Forbes Four Star property, selected by the Michelin Guide.

  24. Rank 24. Suite 115

    Cocktail Bar

The password is posted on the door, which is either charming or cheating depending on how much you needed the walk. Inside this cocktail speakeasy on College Street, warm amber tones and a bar stocked long enough to require a second look set the scene. The team runs food-forward cocktails, occasionally served with homemade lollipops or mango rice cake, which raises fewer eyebrows than it should. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars.

  25. Sitting next to Blood Alley in Gastown, L'Abattoir leans into its address with a quasi-industrial room that somehow feels warm the moment you walk in. It's a relaxed fine dining spot built around French technique and local West Coast ingredients, and the Michelin Guide has taken notice. Grab a bar seat downstairs if you didn't book; the kitchen view is part of the deal. The team took Vancouver Magazine's Chef of the Year in 2024, and the cooking has kept pace since.

  26. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out over the financial, entertainment, and waterfront districts from every one of the 263 rooms, which run among the largest in the city. The design skews more contemporary than you'd expect from the Ritz name, though the marble bathrooms and the service stay entirely on brand. The CN Tower, Roy Thomson Hall, and three pro sports arenas are all a short walk away, which keeps the lobby interesting.

  28. Artifacts from the site's past life as a cannon battery and maritime warehouse sit alongside guest room furniture, and the reception desk is built from oak planks two centuries old. This boutique hotel in Old Québec's lower port earns its Michelin 2 Keys with rooms that feel quietly contemporary, river views from nearly every window, and heated bathroom floors that make a lot of sense come January.

    The awards

  29. The building juts into Halifax Harbour like a ship that forgot to leave, which is the point: Muir is a luxury hotel whose seafaring references stop well short of nautical kitsch. Rooms are lined in gray oak, bar shelves curve like portholes, and nearly every window faces water. A spa, a gallery, and a well-regarded restaurant fill out the rest. It holds a Forbes Four Star and a Michelin Key.

    The awards

  30. Rank 30. June

    Brasserie

The room arrives before the menu does: red-tinged lighting, curves everywhere, the kind of design that makes a Tuesday feel like an occasion. June is a French bistro and serious cocktail bar on Cambie that landed at number 17 on North America's 50 Best Bars and fourth on Canada's 100 Best new restaurants in the same year, which is a neat trick. The food runs to butter-heavy, comforting bistro standards; the drinks list is the other reason to come.

  31. Rank 31. Humboldt Bar

    Cocktail Bar

A small, romantically lit cocktail bar built around a single obsession: Alexander von Humboldt, the 19th-century naturalist whose travels shape every drink on the menu. The cocktails trace his expeditions through flavor, from bright and citrusy to smoky and feral, one of them made with a spirit flavored by raw venison suspended in the still. The corner banquette is exactly as good as it sounds.

  32. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton got married here, which tells you most of what you need to know about the register this hotel has always played in. A grand, old-school property anchoring the Golden Square Mile, it sits close to the Museum of Fine Arts and a stretch of serious shopping. The rooms run quietly luxurious, the service formal without being stiff, and the whole place carries the easy confidence of somewhere that has never needed to explain itself.

  33. There's no menu at this Bloor West cocktail bar, which is either the most liberating or the most anxiety-inducing news you'll get all evening. The bartenders build something custom around what you're after, or they'll walk you through the house-made liqueurs until the right one finds you. The room shifts from low-key spirits conversation to full party depending on the hour, so arrive accordingly.

  34. Rank 34. Bagheera

    Indian-inspired Cocktail Bar

The entrance is a horse-race bookie front, and you have to place a bet on King Louie to get through the door. Inside, this Indian-inspired cocktail bar has a barrel-shaped ceiling studded with horseshoes and palm-tree wallpaper that lands somewhere between Victorian colonial club and Jungle Book fever dream. The cocktails lean into the conceit, with spiced spirits, pistachio orgeat, and coconut ginger tea doing most of the convincing. North America's 50 Best Bars has it at 59.

  35. Rank 35. Mother

    Cocktail Bar

Barrel-aged Negronis rest along a minimalist backbar while the kitchen, so to speak, runs on kombucha, lacto-ferments, and house-brewed potions. Mother is a fermentation-focused cocktail bar on Queen West where the drinks lean more mad-scientist than mixologist, in a good way. The chiaroscuro lighting keeps things moody and polished. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars, which tracks for a room this quietly serious about what's in the glass.

  36. Three thousand live plants line almost every surface of this eco-luxury hotel in King West, which means the lobby smells like a greenhouse and that is entirely the point. Rooms run crisp and contemporary with organic textures doing the warmth-lifting, while Harriet's Rooftop handles sundowners above the neighborhood. The Michelin Guide awarded it one key, which suggests the whole sustainability-meets-pleasure argument lands.

  37. Rank 37. Dear Friend

    Cocktail Bar

Bentwood bar stools and the general feeling of a European café that got off the ferry in Dartmouth and decided to stay. Dear Friend is a cocktail and oyster bar that helped put this side of the harbour on the map, and the drinks have a culinary lean that earns the comparison: dashi, spruce, sea buckthorn. Beers and ciders run local; wines run funky. Ranked among Canada's 100 Best Bars in 2026.

  38. Rank 38. Cocktail Bar

    Cocktail Bar

The worn white cabinets behind the bar hold the spirits like a well-organized medicine cabinet, which feels right for a cocktail bar that started as somewhere to wait for a table across the street and quietly became a destination of its own. Up a short flight of stairs on Dundas West, the room is tiny, warm in winter, breezy in summer, and usually full of people who knew exactly where they were going.

  39. A whitewashed-brick gallery on Dundas West that turns into a cocktail bar once you push past the dark curtain at the back. The curved bar glows, curated art lines the walls, and the menu reads like a love letter to Toronto, organized like a Yellow Pages from another dimension. The drinks are serious enough that combinations which look alarming on paper arrive exactly as they should. North America's 50 Best Bars ranked it 69th in 2026.

  40. Rank 40. Simpl Things

    Cocktail Bar

A pastel-washed Parkdale cocktail bar where the martinis come topped with a little caviar and the daiquiris are built around caramelized banana. The cocktail menu tends toward the nostalgic and playful, but there's enough craft underneath to keep things interesting. Come evening, the kitchen pivots to Asian comfort food, udon carbonara and stuffed bāo among them. Half-pours served in vintage glassware solve the problem of wanting everything.

  41. Burnt-orange carpets, vintage TV sets, and retro beer signs set the scene at this cocktail bar on Mount Pleasant's quieter side, where the decor reads like your grandparents' basement but the drinks are anything but. The bar landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list, and the cocktail program earns it, with clarified Greek yogurt turning up in tequila drinks and mezcal slushies arriving alongside tater tots in tin lunch boxes.

  42. Rank 42. Shelter

    Eastern European Cocktail Bar

Gas masks line the bar, imported from Ukraine and Poland or made by local artists, which tells you this cocktail bar is not taking itself lightly but is absolutely taking its drinks seriously. The menu is built around the science of aroma, so every cocktail arrives with a deliberate fragrance doing half the work. It's intimate, a little theatrical, and landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list.

The soft-serve ice cream comes spiked, which tells you something about how Bar Mordecai runs its cocktail program. This lively Dundas West bar spans a hotel-lobby-feeling main floor and a karaoke basement, with an events calendar that fits bachata classes, tarot readings, and drag-hosted bingo into the same week. The fizzy wine list runs from Champagne to sparkling sake to non-alc. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars.

  47. Rank 47. Bar Numéro

    Modern Cocktail Bar

The stainless steel bar runs through the center of the room, with bartenders working inside it rather than behind it, so you're surrounded by the action whether you want to be or not. It's a cocktail bar on Saint-Laurent doing force-carbonated highballs and tableside martinis poured into glasses refreshed mid-drink to hold temperature, but a Labatt 50 sits on the menu without irony. Named a Regional Top 10 Honoree at the Spirited Awards, and already on Canada's 100 Best Bars list.

  48. Rank 48. Citrus & Cane

    Tropical Cocktail Bar

  49. Rank 49. 1608

    Cocktail Bar

The circular brass bar in the Château Frontenac's turret room looks out over the St. Lawrence, and local lore has Churchill plotting Allied strategy in this same spot, Scotch and cigar in hand. The cocktail bar has moved on: seasonal drinks draw from Canadian literature and local ingredients like maple gum and verjus from Île d'Orléans. The whisky list alone has grown considerably since Churchill's Johnnie Walker days.

  50. Rank 50. The Coldroom

    Cocktail Bar

A painted duck above a handleless door is the only sign you're in the right place. Ring the bell, wait, then descend into a 19th-century warehouse that now runs as an intimate speakeasy in Old Montreal. The bar team builds spirit-forward cocktails tailored to your mood, and the room rewards the kind of night that starts with "just one." North America's 50 Best Bars placed it at number 97 in 2026.

  51. A boutique hotel a block from the Inner Harbour, the Magnolia leans into Victoria's Victorian mood without becoming a museum piece. Sixty-four rooms keep the scale personal, soaking tubs anchor the bathrooms, and the team has a habit of noticing when guests mention a birthday online and quietly doing something about it. Silk Road tea at turndown, locally made chocolates, hot cider in the lobby when it's cold. It holds a Michelin Key.

    The awards

  52. The bar sits above a convenience store on 14th, which tells you nothing useful about what's inside. This cocktail bar runs a wine list across twelve pages, with vintage Champagne magnums, rare Burgundy, and Vin Jaune by the glass. The cocktail menu is equally committed, and quietly funny about it. Party Shots keep things honest. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars, which the room itself gives no indication of caring about.

  53. The china on the afternoon tea service was a gift from the Queen in 1939, which tells you roughly everything about what kind of hotel this is. The Fairmont Empress is a grand railway-era property facing Victoria's Inner Harbour, all ivy-covered limestone and English pageantry in a city that takes its Englishness very seriously. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Key. Renovation has freshened it without sanding off the delightful self-importance.

    The awards

  54. Rank 54. No Vacancy

    Cocktail Bar

Exposed brick and mid-century furniture bathed in warm amber light make this Ossington cocktail bar feel like someone's very cool living room, if that someone also happened to know a lot about Japanese whisky. The drinks program leans Japanese-inspired, the zero-proof options are taken as seriously as everything else, and the food is good enough that you'll order more than you planned. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list in its first year open.

  55. The door says printing shop; the door is lying. Past a psychedelic mirrored hallway, this speakeasy opens into red velvet banquettes and warm rods of light, somewhere between a 1970s supper club and a set from a film that hasn't been made yet. The basement runs centrifuges and rotary evaporators, which is not how most bars do it, and the cocktail menu makes that fairly obvious.

  56. John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged their famous bed-in for peace here, which means this downtown Montreal hotel has been living off that story ever since, though a massive renovation has given it some new ones. The lobby pulls in local art and a genuinely urban energy, the rooms are warm rather than grand, and a 24-hour wellness center handles whatever the conference schedule did to you. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  57. Rank 57. Good Thief

    Vietnamese

Pull back the velvet curtain and you're inside the world of nhậu, the Vietnamese tradition of drinking and eating with friends until things get blurry. Good Thief is a cocktail bar and restaurant on Main Street, the self-described rebellious younger sibling to Anh and Chi next door. The drinks lean boldly Vietnamese, the food runs from binchotan skewers to Dungeness crab garlic noodles, and the whole menu is designed to share. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

    Cocktail Bar

A proper hi-fi setup anchors this '70s-lounge cocktail bar inside a heritage building in Edmonton's Brewery District, where the lighting stays low and the mid-century furniture looks like it was sourced with actual patience. The drinks lean nostalgic without being lazy about it. Snacks run to chicken wings stuffed with mushrooms and black truffle, because apparently that's where we are now. 59. Arthur Erickson's twisting downtown skyscraper is an unlikely host for a hotel that seems determined to keep you out of your room. A lobby pool table, nightclub, high-end Chinese restaurant, and rooftop-adjacent lounge make the public floors feel like the whole point. The 147 rooms vary in shape because the building does too, but all get leather headboards, wood floors, and floor-to-ceiling city views. Forbes Four Star, if you want the shorthand.

  60. Rank 60. Laowai

    Shanghainese Speakeasy

The entry is a freezer door inside a Chinatown dumpling shop, and it only opens if you order dumpling No. 7. What's behind it is a speakeasy done up in teal and gold, channeling 1920s Shanghai with enough sincerity to pull it off. The bar carries over fifty baijiu bottlings, the largest selection in Canada, and the cocktails are built around the spirit rather than just gesturing at it. North America's 50 Best Bars has it at number 72.

  62. Stone walls, whitewashed brick, and colourful tiles set the mood at this aperitivo bar tucked into Old Montreal. 63. Rank 63. Bar Bello

    Italian Cocktail Bar

A vintage vending machine stocked with eight bottled Negronis, including a rotating seasonal riff, is a pretty good thesis statement for an aperitivo bar. Bar Bello is an ode to Italian drinking culture, all taralli, focaccia, and a long list of amari and vermouths alongside Sbagliatos, Garibaldis, and cocktails built for a large patio. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list. Come with a tolerance for bitterness and no plans until evening.

  64. Rank 64. Bar Dominion

    Cocktail Bar

The original Art Deco tile floors and woodwork have been around forever, and the team behind Bar Dominion wisely left them alone. This is a gastropub with a serious cocktail program, the kind of room that feels like a grand hotel bar but where people actually stay for a second drink. The raw bar and steak frites handle the food side; the cocktails handle the rest.

  65. The smallest room here is 500 square feet with a gas fireplace and a soaking tub, which tells you exactly what kind of ski resort this is. The Four Seasons sits a few minutes outside Whistler's main village, which is either a slight inconvenience or the whole point, depending on your tolerance for après-ski foot traffic. A shuttle runs to the mountain, where a ski concierge meets you with your gear already sorted. It holds 2 Michelin Keys and a Forbes Four Star.

  66. Stone turrets rising against the Canadian Rockies make the Fairmont Banff Springs look less like a hotel and more like something a railway baron commissioned to intimidate guests. This grand 724-room resort sits inside Banff National Park, with a golf course, a full-service spa, several restaurants, and enough seasonal outdoor activities to exhaust anyone who came to relax. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  67. Wind Cries Mary is a red-brick cocktail bar on Bastion Square where the menu is laid out like a forest, so you pick a drink by whether you want leaves (floral) or roots (earthy). It has made a Spirited Awards regional top ten for international restaurant bars in Canada. The kitchen is serious about its fried chicken, which makes this a good first stop that tends to become the whole night.

    Cocktail Bar

Twenty seats below a Dutch-Indo restaurant, this subterranean speakeasy is decorated with 1970s Nederlandse kitsch, Funko Pop dolls, and enough knick-knacks to make a flea market blush. The cocktails lean toward the unexpected, carrot-cake-infused whisky being the kind of thing that shows up without apology. The barman runs the room with a reputation for bespoke pours and a soft spot for single malts. Canada's 100 Best ranks it among the country's top bars.

  69. The sinuous cocoon of curved South African mahogany is the first thing you clock, and it's enough to make you forget you're on College Street. Bar Raval is a pintxos bar and all-day Spanish hangout with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, pouring daytime cava, serious vermouth, and sharp cocktails from a tight modern program. The food runs from conservas to late-night snacks, and the room is designed to make leaving feel like a personal failure.

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail menu built around the golden age of travel sets the tone at this small, intimate bar tucked down a quiet Saint-Roch side street. The drinks lean theatrical, the food leans oceanic, and the whole operation treats oyster shots and caviar as completely normal bar snacks, which they are here. Weekends tip festive; the room is elegant enough that nobody feels overdressed for ordering well.

  71. A Victorian house in Halifax's North End that survived the 1917 Halifax Explosion and got turned into a public house that feels like your most hospitable grandparent lives there. Rooms cluttered with memorabilia, hand-pumped cask ale, and fiddlers who sometimes bring a bagpiper along for weekends. In winter, a crackling fire makes it very easy to lose an afternoon. Ranked 12th on Canada's 100 Best Bars list in 2026.

  72. Rank 72. BarChef

    Modern Cocktail Bar

A single word above a heavy black door on Queen West is all the signposting BarChef bothers with. Inside, brick walls, dark wood, and dimmed lighting pull every eye toward the bar, which is exactly where Frankie Solarik wants you. The specialty is what the menu calls modernist cocktails, and the theatrical production values are not incidental to the drink. Aged bottled cocktails and punch bowls round out a list that takes itself seriously, and somehow gets away with it.

  73. The dining room at Fogo Island Inn sits on stilts over the North Atlantic, which sets the tone before you've even ordered. The kitchen runs a locavore menu built almost entirely from what the island provides, so the fish on your plate may have been swimming that morning. The Michelin Guide awarded three Keys. Getting here takes real commitment, but the island is closer to the eastern seaboard than most maps make it feel.

  74. Ski-in, ski-out at the base of Blackcomb, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler is a castle-sized resort hotel that somehow avoids feeling like one. Rustic wooden beams cross the lobby ceiling, guest rooms lean traditional rather than antiseptic, and the soaking tubs are sized for people who've actually earned them. The heated outdoor pool stays open all season, and a Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course handles the summers. Michelin awarded it 2 Keys.

    Cocktail Bar

You reach Lala by walking through the brasserie upstairs and following the crowd toward the back, which is either mysterious or a fire-hazard joke depending on your mood. In the basement, a cocktail bar waits with velvet curves, a golden glow, and retro speakers that actually earn the decor. Vinyl DJs spin nightly, and the bar team turns out drinks with real invention, bottled cocktails and mezcal-spiked riffs among them. Ranked 19th on Canada's 100 Best Bars list.

  78. No two rooms share the same floor plan in this 65-room boutique hotel, a side effect of the heritage building it lives in. The common areas double as gallery space for a serious modern art collection, and the business district address puts you close to everything without the convention-hotel anonymity. Gotham Steak House is on-site when you want a drink and a steak without leaving the building. Staff have been known to arrange bicycles for the seawall.

  79. The wine merchant boutique off the lobby sets the tone: this is a downtown Vancouver hotel that takes its European clubhouse fantasy seriously. Dark wood, warm lighting, and old-world touches give the rooms and lounge a different register than the glass-tower norm. A spa, indoor pool under a sunroof, and a personal concierge round out the comforts, and the business and shopping district sits right outside.

    The awards

  80. A cocktail bar in the back of a bodega in Inglewood, Business & Pleasure is a little harder to find than your average drink. The nostalgic bent runs deep: the After School Special riffs on cola and tonic but builds it out with shōchū, a Nanaimo-made quinquina, and umeshu. The single malt program is quietly obsessive. Ranked among Canada's 100 Best Bars, it draws a crowd that knows the difference between familiar and basic.

  82. Rank 83. Black Dice Cafe

    Japanese Coffee Shop

A vintage pinball machine throws just enough light to appreciate the chromium-and-formica bar stools at this Japanese rockabilly cocktail bar on Dundas West. Sake cocktails, Sapporo pints, and whisky highballs are the move, with Asahi served at a temperature the bar takes personally. The owner fronts a rockabilly band around town, which explains why the ephemera on the walls feels curated rather than accumulated.

  83. Two copper-toned glass towers rise over the edge of Yaletown, standing out from the steel-gray skyline in a way that feels either bold or slightly overdressed, depending on your mood. The hotel itself has 329 rooms, a Spa by JW, an executive lounge, and enough meeting space to host a small nation's parliament. BC Place is steps away, and the casino is on-site, so guests are rarely short of somewhere to be.

  84. The Martini "My Way" lets you spec your gin or vodka, then choose from olives, twists, caper berries, cocktail onions, or the ominously listed "Monster Munch," for which the menu offers only: Trust Us. This Junction cocktail bar and cafe runs all day, moving from breakfast sandwiches in the morning to caviar and chips after dark, with a deep natural wine cellar and a serious ice program keeping the evening crowd honest. It landed at number 25 on Canada's Best Bars list.

  85. Rank 86. Gift Shop

    Cocktail Bar

The entrance is through a barbershop on Ossington, which should tell you everything about the vibe before you order a thing. Gift Shop is a compact cocktail bar that runs on classic inspiration, with originals built from combinations that have no business working as well as they do. The Lycheese Martini, which is exactly what it sounds like, rehabilitates the lychee martini with Parmigiano Reggiano. Ranked on Canada's 100 Best Bars list.

The ceiling-height backbar comes with a library ladder, which tells you everything about how seriously this cocktail bar takes its inventory. The menu is organized by spirit, playfully named and genuinely long, so the half-sized classics are a smart way in. It ranks on North America's 50 Best Bars, yet the neighborhood vibe keeps it from feeling precious, and first-timers browse alongside the regulars hunting 25-year Macallan.

  87. Vintage amps and speakers from the '70s and '80s line the walls of this Japanese kissaten-style bar on Dupont, which pulls double duty as a daytime café before DJs take over at dusk. The cocktail list leans on yuzu, oolong, sake, and Japanese teas, with signatures drawn from famous albums. Rice paper Noguchi lamps and koinobori streamers hang overhead, and the mid-century furniture makes clear that nobody here is in a hurry to leave.

  88. Storm-watching is practically a scheduled activity here, which tells you everything about what kind of resort the Wickaninnish Inn is. Perched between old-growth rainforest and Chesterman Beach on a remote stretch of Vancouver Island, it holds a Michelin Key and a Forbes Four Star. Rooms face the Pacific, with fireplaces, deep tubs, and balconies built for watching twenty-foot swells roll in. The spa draws on the surrounding rainforest; the restaurant leans hard into local seafood.

  89. Rank 90. Paper Lantern

    Vietnamese Cocktail Bar

Down a staircase beneath a Chinatown restaurant, red lanterns mark this below-street Vietnamese cocktail bar as something worth finding. The drinks lean tropical but take detours, like a Vietnamese iced coffee built with cold brew, condensed milk, and coconut. Small plates of bánh mì and shaken beef have a way of appearing at tables where nobody ordered food. It landed on Canada's 100 Best Bars list, which tracks, given how often people seem to lose track of time here.

  90. A loft-style beer bar in Inglewood where the list is organized by style and vintage, the way a serious wine shop might do it. The team behind it includes Alberta's first Certified Cicerone, and the draft and bottle selection runs from rare Trappist ales to hard-to-find natural fermentations from brewers most people haven't heard of yet. Charcuterie and conservas fill the gaps. It ranked 36th on Canada's 100 Best Bars list for 2026.

  91. The "no cutlery" rule wasn't an accident, it was the whole point. 416 Snack Bar is a candlelit neighborhood bar on Bathurst where the industry crowd figured things out fast and never really left. There's no cocktail list to speak of, just a well-stocked bar happy to make the drinks people kept asking for. Ranked among Canada's 100 Best Bars, it lands its vibe by knowing exactly what it is and quietly ignoring everything it isn't.

  92. Wood panelling, mounted deer heads, and mismatched chairs set the tone at Le Majestique, a festive bar on The Main where the seafood tower arrives with theatrical intent. Industry regulars fill the room early, working through a deep list of natural wines, microbrews, and classic cocktails. The oysters stay hyper-fresh, but most people are here to drink well in a room that looks kitschy and acts like it means it.

  93. Frankie Solarik's follow-up to BarChef trades smoke machines for herb jars, mortar and pestle, and a chemist's storefront you walk through to reach the bar. The cocktail menu on West Queen West reads like a compendium of house-made bitters, hydrosols, and foraged botanicals, with drinks built to order from vintage apothecary vessels. The showmanship didn't go anywhere, though, and neither did the '90s hip-hop.

  94. Rank 95. POP Wine Bar

    Natural Wine Bar

Oysters shucked to order, caviar service, artisanal cheese, and a wine list deep in small-production naturals, all of it happening in Saskatoon. This wine bar leans hard into the Parisian boîte fantasy, and the list rewards the curious: skin-contact wines from the Okanagan, odd co-ferments, bottles that traveled a long way to end up somewhere genuinely surprising. The cocktail side runs to very cold Martinis and milk punches. Canada's 100 Best ranks it among the country's top bars.

  95. The long counter and vintage wallpaper say diner; the cocktail list politely disagrees. This College Street bar leans into the greasy-spoon aesthetic while the kitchen sends out cod with Osetra caviar and the bartenders fold Szechuan peppercorn into a White Negroni. Cold beers are always an option, of course. Regulars fill the stools early and stay a while, which tracks for a place that ranked on Canada's 100 Best Bars.

  96. A lobby floor that appears to float, suspended from concrete arches by metal rods, is a strong opening argument for a hotel. The Ace Toronto sits in the Garment District, designed with curvaceous brick and retro-futuristic bones. Rooms lean unpretentious: bare wood, vintage-ish furniture, efficient without being sparse. Patrick Kriss runs the restaurant downstairs, and a 14th-floor bar handles the panoramic-view duties. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  97. Some rooms here were designed by Lenny Kravitz, which tells you roughly what you're getting: a 96-room boutique hotel in the Entertainment District where the interiors swing between opulent and rock-and-roll. Four bars and restaurants run from a casual Parisian café on the lower floors to a California-Baja rooftop on the 44th. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  98. Blinds, curtains, and the fleeting Vancouver sun: all managed from the bedside panel without disturbing your sheets. This contemporary luxury hotel occupies fifteen floors of a mixed-use skyscraper, which means it plugs into the city rather than sealing itself off from it. Rooms run large, suites have balconies over West Georgia, and the bathrooms come with mirror-mounted screens and multi-head showers. A Michelin Key, a spa, and a northern Italian restaurant round things out.

    The awards

  99. A Coal Harbour boutique hotel in a sleek glass tower, the Loden holds a Michelin Key and earns it partly through geography: this corner of downtown sits like stadium seating for the Burrard Inlet panorama. Rooms run from understated to a suite with a wraparound terrace for serious mountain-gazing, all tied together by mid-century touches, a muted regional palette, and deep soaking tubs that make sense the moment Vancouver's famous drizzle sets in.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
