The Best Sushi in the United Kingdom

The best sushi in the United Kingdom, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, The 50, and The Infatuation have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Sushi Kanesaka comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in London.

More Less

The Araki and Art Sushi hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide and The Infatuation show up on more of this list than any other guide.

  1. The counter is a single slab of hinoki cypress wood, which sets the tone nicely. This is an intimate omakase sushi room, tucked on the first floor of 45 Park Lane and reached by escort from the lobby, as if you're being let in on something. Around 18 pieces move through the meal, nigiri built on Yamagata rice alongside dishes like steamed abalone. It holds a Michelin star, and the room's kumiko panels and bamboo make the occasion feel entirely deliberate.

  2. The counter is 200-year-old cypress wood, which sets the tone immediately. This nine-seat Mayfair omakase room runs two sittings a night, one menu, no substitutions, and a level of precision that borders on the ceremonial. Mitsuhiro Araki's long-time deputy now runs the kitchen, carrying forward standards that leave no margin for improvisation. A special-occasion place by design, with prices to match. The 50 Discovery named it among their picks.

  4. The Swiss pine paneling makes this compact Notting Hill sushi bar feel uncannily like a ski chalet, which is either disorienting or charming depending on your mood. Two six-person counters run the room, one facing the kitchen, one facing the street. Order nigiri by the piece or let the chef decide. The seafood is the point, including tuna brought in from Spain, and the wine list skews toward bottles priced for people who don't ask about bottles.

  6. Eero Saarinen's old US Embassy building is now a Rosewood hotel, and the bones of that mid-century modernist space give this sushi restaurant an unlikely grandeur. Masayoshi Takayama, the name behind New York's Masa, runs the show. Sit at the seven-seat counter for omakase or order from the broader Japanese menu at a table. The ingredients lean toward the luxurious end of the spectrum, which the room quietly prepares you for.

  7. Ichiban is a casual Japanese spot on Albany Road in Roath, and its menu runs past 170 items, which is how it keeps groups with opposing food opinions from splitting up. Sushi sits beside stir-fries, soups, and fried things, and the teishoku tray puts beef, sashimi, rolls, rice, and miso on one table. Kirin is the obvious drink. It's been around forever, and takeaway and delivery run like a well-oiled machine.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
