The Best European Food in the United Kingdom

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best European food in the United Kingdom, according to the experts: the National Restaurant Awards, The 50, and the Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Perilla comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in London and Belfast.

More Less

Alba Restaurant and 1 York Place hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The 50 next.

  1. Rank 1. Perilla

    Modern European

Natural light pours into this Newington Green restaurant where pendant lamps hang over a mix of marble and wood tables, and a bare brick wall behind the bar does most of the decorating. The kitchen has a fine-dining pedigree but the room doesn't perform that way. Modern European cooking, menus that change daily, seasonal ingredients taken seriously. The kind of neighbourhood spot that pulls people from further away than they'd usually admit.

  2. The double-height ceiling and original butcher's tiles inside a restored market arcade set the tone before you've even ordered. This modern restaurant in St Peter Port earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand running sharing plates off a wood-fired grill, with French, Spanish, Italian, and British ideas folding together without too much fuss. Start with a cocktail at the bar, then settle in for something slow and convivial.

  3. Rank 3. 1 York Place

    European Bistro

A neighbourhood bistro tucked into the Georgian lanes of Clifton, where the menu roams pan-European without apology, from ricotta gnudi to squid ink rice to veal schnitzel. Sit upstairs to catch the light through big windows, or take the spiral staircase down for something quieter. Whole roast chicken arrives for sharing, which sets the tone: this is an easygoing room, relaxed service included, not a place that takes itself too seriously.

  4. Rank 3. Bluebells Restaurant

    Modern European

Dark green walls with rose gold panelling give this Ascot restaurant its look, which hovers somewhere between country house and cocktail bar without fully committing to either. Modern European cooking is the draw, with confident technique and combinations that actually make sense together. You can sit by the fire pit in the main room or take the lighter conservatory, and the service team seem to genuinely enjoy themselves, which helps.

  5. Rank 3. Chapter One

    Modern European

A 1930s building in Locksbottom, with just enough period detail in the interior to feel considered rather than costumed, sets the scene for this neighborhood modern European restaurant. The Mibrasa grill does real work here, lending some smoke and char to prime British produce. Regulars clearly know the menu by heart, and the service team are the kind who notice when your glass is nearly empty.

  6. Rank 3. Delaunay

    European

Panelled walls, green leather banquettes, and marble floors set the mood at this grand all-day European café near the West End, modelled on the great café-restaurants of Vienna and Paris. Breakfast runs to eggs every way; dinner leans into schnitzels and sausages. The pre-theatre menu draws the Covent Garden crowd before curtain, and occasional evenings pair dinner with interviews from stars of stage and screen.

  7. Rank 3. Dovetale

    Contemporary European

The Knickerbocker Glory you build yourself is either the cheekiest move on any Mayfair menu or the most honest one, depending on your mood. Dovetale is a full-service restaurant inside 1 Hotel Mayfair, all natural materials and trailing greenery, with a terrace that earns its keep in summer. The food looks to Europe for its bearings, leaning into sharing plates and the kind of cooking that lets good ingredients carry the argument.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
