The Best Wine Bars in the United Kingdom

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best wine bars in the United Kingdom, according to the experts: the National Restaurant Awards, the Michelin Guide, and Eater have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Planque comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in London and Cardiff.

More Less

Labombe by Trivet and Ogof hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.

  1. Rank 1. Planque

    Modern British Wine Bar

Two former railway arches in Haggerston have been turned into a wine-focused restaurant with cobalt blue walls, a communal table at its center, and a surprising amount of natural light for a space that technically lives underground. Membership gets you wine storage and priority reservations, but the 60-cover room is open to everyone. The modern British menu is short and deceptively simple, with small-producer, low-intervention bottles doing a lot of the talking.

  2. The separate entrance off Old Park Lane is a small but telling detail: this Michelin-starred wine bar and restaurant from the Trivet team is doing its own thing inside the COMO Metropolitan. The menu roams freely, from snacks to pâté en croûte to dishes pulled off the fire, without much interest in being categorized. The global wine list is long and the staff actually know it, which in Mayfair counts as a personality.

  3. Rank 3. Ogof

    Wine Bar

A Pontcanna neighbourhood bistro where the blackboard changes, the natural wine list runs deep, and the cooking leans heavily on vegetables without making a fuss about it. Weekday lunches are sandwiches; evenings and weekends step up to proper plates built around what's good. Salt marsh lamb, chard, braised carrot, that sort of thing: hearty and pared back. The wines on tap draw the kind of regulars who actually read the lesser-known selections before ordering.

  4. Rank 4. Montrose

    Wine Bar

Exposed stonework and soft lighting set the mood in this wine bar and restaurant housed in a converted old inn near the Palace of Holyroodhouse, from the team behind Timberyard. The wine list leans into lesser-known regions, and the sharing plates are built to match something interesting in the glass. A stool at the ground-floor bar counter is the right call if you can get one.

  5. Rank 4. Sune

    Wine Bar

Sune (rhymes with "sooner," which is worth knowing before you ask) feels like a wine bar that quietly decided it wanted to be a neighborhood restaurant when it grew up. Around 14 sharing plates rotate on a fluid menu, built on simple pairings that don't crowd each other out. The room is small, the service is warm, and the kitchen in Hackney is the kind that makes restraint look like a gift.

  6. Wine is genuinely the organizing principle here, not a selling point: over 70 options by the glass gives you room to wander. This smart hotel restaurant in West Berkshire leans elegantly into that logic, with a carte in the main room and a seasonal tasting menu with pairings tucked into The Tasting Room next door. A nearby vineyard supplies local sparkling wine, which is a nice touch if you're the kind of person who appreciates provenance with their first pour.

  8. Rank 8. Yuki Bar

    Wine Bar

A railway arch in Hackney sheltering one of the more self-assured natural wine bars in London. The sommelier behind it spent time at Noma, and the list leans into Jura, Savoie, and Loire without being precious about it. Food is unapologetically secondary, running to silken tofu, cured beet tops, and made-to-order beef tartare. The kind of place that makes the natural wine bar format feel less tired than it has any right to be right now.

  9. Rank 9. DUCKSOUP

    Modern Mediterranean Wine Bar

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
