The 16 Best Bistros in the United Kingdom

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best bistros in the United Kingdom, according to the experts: the National Restaurant Awards, the Michelin Guide, and the Top 50 Gastropubs have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. The Palmerston comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in London and Edinburgh.

More Less

The White Horse and Josephine Bouchon hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the National Restaurant Awards next.

  1. A converted bank in Edinburgh's West End that traded one kind of vault for another, The Palmerston is an all-day French bistro and bakery where the high ceilings do the work of making every lunch feel like an occasion. The menu shifts daily, the portions ignore calorie counts, and the pastries at breakfast have quietly become a neighborhood habit. It landed at number 65 on the National Restaurant Awards list in 2026.

  2. Rank 2. The White Horse

    Seasonal Bistro

A country gastropub east of the River Dee that the village literally helped rebuild, lending tools and labour when Gary Usher's team took over a shuttered local. The seasonal menu runs to comforting bistro dishes, and the guest chef series has pulled in names like Tom Kerridge and Angela Hartnett, which is not nothing for a pub in a Cheshire hamlet. It landed on the Top 50 Gastropubs list, and walkers and cyclists seem to find it without much trouble.

  3. Rank 3. Josephine Bouchon

    Lyonnaise Bouchon

Tightly packed tables, colourful posters on the walls, and a menu that reads like a love letter to Lyon: vol-au-vent, andouillette, frog's legs. Claude Bosi's Chelsea bouchon is an old-school French bistro in full earnest, with service delivered in high spirits and a wine list leaning heavily on French producers. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and the set menu makes a compelling case for why.

  4. Rank 4. Elsa

    Alsatian Bistro

A bistro built around Alsatian cooking on one of Fitzrovia's busiest streets, Elsa feels more like a neighbourhood local than its central postcode suggests. The front room puts you in the thick of it; the back room lets you breathe. The menu is spare and unfussy, with a seasonal terrine and the occasional shared baeckeoffe doing the talking. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the service is warm enough that you'll notice when it's missing elsewhere.

  5. Rank 4. Oren

    Eastern Mediterranean Bistro

Charcoal smoke is doing most of the heavy lifting at this small, buzzy Dalston bistro from chef Oded Oren, where the Eastern Mediterranean sharing menu leans on the grill for lamb, chicken, and vegetables alike. Start with the stone-baked flatbread, plan for around five plates between two, and factor in the cocktails, which are priced like the kitchen remembers what a neighbourhood restaurant is supposed to be. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  6. Rank 4. OTHER

    Bistro

Bright orange walls set the tone in this small Bedminster bistro, where the menu shifts constantly and defies any tidy label. Chef Zak Hitchman pulls from wherever he likes, and the cooking is playful enough that you stop trying to categorize it and just order. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks: the food and the wine list both land at prices that don't require a quiet word with your bank.

  7. Rank 7. 1 York Place

    European Bistro

A neighbourhood bistro tucked into the Georgian lanes of Clifton, where the menu roams pan-European without apology, from ricotta gnudi to squid ink rice to veal schnitzel. Sit upstairs to catch the light through big windows, or take the spiral staircase down for something quieter. Whole roast chicken arrives for sharing, which sets the tone: this is an easygoing room, relaxed service included, not a place that takes itself too seriously.

  8. Tucked into Deansgate Mews on an elevated walkway inside the old Great Northern building, this vegetable-forward sharing-plates bistro sources from local, ethical growers and lets each dish arrive one at a time so nothing gets lost in the crowd. The bread comes from Holy Grain next door, the wine list leans low-intervention, and the room runs warm and loud in the way that makes you order another round without noticing.

  10. Rank 7. Benedicts

    Modern Bistro

A modern bistro on one of Norwich's scruffier, more interesting streets, Benedicts keeps things deliberately unfussy, letting Norfolk ingredients do the talking. The chef is a vocal champion of the region's larder, and the cooking wears that quietly, without turning the menu into a geography lesson. A few different menus run in varying lengths, and on warm days the alfresco small plates outside are a gentler way in.

  12. Rank 7. Oak

    Vegetarian Bistro

Shelves along the front dining room hold jars and produce from the restaurant's own allotment just outside Bath, which supplies a good chunk of what ends up on your plate. Oak is an unpretentious vegetarian bistro running well-priced small plates built for sharing, where the kitchen leans hard into complementary textures rather than making vegetables feel like a compromise. A five-course feasting menu is there at dinner if the decision fatigue hits early.

  15. Rank 7. Vinette

    Parisian Bistro

A Parisian wine bar transplanted to Broughton Street, with bistro cooking that pairs French classics and Scottish produce with the occasional Mediterranean detour. The set lunch includes wine, which is either very civilised or a very good reason to cancel your afternoon. Downstairs sits Vivien, a speakeasy-style cocktail bar, in case one concept wasn't enough. Stuart Ralston runs the room, and the room is cosy without trying too hard about it.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
