The best pan-Asian food in the United Kingdom, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, The 50, and The Infatuation have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Awabi comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in London.

More Less

Gilpin Spice and Kota hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.

  3. Rank 1. Kota

    Pan-Asian

Kota means "shellfish" in Maori, which tells you almost everything about where the tasting menu's loyalties lie. Sitting on the Porthleven harbourside, the restaurant pulls Cornish seafood through a lens shaped by chef Jude Kereama's Maori, Chinese, and Malaysian heritage, with fish or meat options at each course. The result is somewhere between a coastal dinner and a quiet geography lesson, in the best possible company.

  4. Rank 1. Land

    Vegetarian Pan-Asian

Tucked into the Victorian ironwork of Great Western Arcade, Land is a small, intimate vegetarian restaurant running a set menu that's almost entirely vegan. Pan-Asian touches show up throughout, carrot char siu sitting alongside sake lees and other quietly surprising moves. The menu shifts with the seasons, and the cooking has a genuinely inventive streak that doesn't feel like it's trying to win you over. Wine flights are available, and the service is warm without hovering.

  5. Moody lighting and a low buzz set the tone at Gordon Ramsay's East Asian restaurant in Mayfair, where the menu hops from Japanese tempura to Chinese bao buns to Korean miso fried chicken without stopping to apologize. A raw bar handles sushi duties for those who want to plant themselves somewhere and commit. The kind of room where the crowd dresses for the occasion, whether the occasion strictly demands it or not.

  7. Rank 1. Nopi

    Pan-Asian

Yotam Ottolenghi's Soho restaurant trades in the kind of cooking his cookbooks made famous: vivid, generously spiced dishes that pull from the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and across Asia. You can order your own main or go the sharing route, which most tables do. Downstairs seats look straight into the kitchen, which keeps the room lively. It draws cookbook devotees and Soho lunchers in roughly equal measure.

  9. Rank 1. Vetch

    Modern Pan-Asian

Shokupan milk bread and char siu pork belly on Hope Street, which tells you most of what you need to know about where Vetch is coming from. It's a modern restaurant that folds East Asian influences into its cooking without making a big deal of it, all housed in a room that keeps things neutral and unfussy. Dinner runs as a tasting menu; lunch and early evening offer something shorter that won't flatten your wallet.

  10. Rank 1. Yugo

    Pan-Asian

The music hits before the menu does at this buzzy, industrial-style Asian fusion restaurant on Wellington Street. Dishes come out as they're ready, sharing-style, moving from tuna sashimi to Panang curry to cured cod with Iberian chorizo and truffled ponzu, which is either a contradiction or a good idea, and it keeps turning out to be the latter. The cocktail list leans Asian-influenced and the team is the kind of friendly that doesn't feel performed.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
