The best Mexican food in the United Kingdom, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and The Infatuation have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Cavita comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in London.
More Less
Cometa and Decimo hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.

Rank 1. Cavita
Mexican
A basement cocktail bar feeds into a bright ground-floor Mexican restaurant in Marylebone, where the open kitchen keeps things lively and the menu runs from hamachi tostadas to a tight lineup of tacos and big sharing platters built for a group. Brunch pulls in a mezcal-and-margaritas crowd that seems happily unbothered by the time of day. The Michelin Guide has it on their list.

Mexican
The team behind Carousel, where the chef changes every week, decided they wanted something a little more permanent and turned their wine bar into this Mexican restaurant on Charlotte Street. Windows open onto the pavement when the weather cooperates. The menu is short and grill-focused, built around crudos, small plates, and a few larger cuts to share, with an ex-dairy Lake District sirloin cured in-house for sixty days doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

Rank 1. Fonda
Mexican
Light wood, trailing foliage, and hand-painted ceramic tiles fill two cheerful floors on Heddon Street, where Santiago Lastra of KOL has scaled up the fonda, Mexico's neighbourhood canteen, into a full-blown Mayfair restaurant. The format is made for sharing: carnitas arrive with fresh tortillas, cocktails come in quantity, and the chef's cheesecake has become something of a signature. The room runs loud and warm, the way it's supposed to.

Mexican
Bright paint, papel picado, and a room loud enough that you'll lean in closer than you planned: this is a Mexican restaurant drawing on time the team spent in Mexico City, Yucatán, and Oaxaca. Tacos, tostadas, and flautas anchor the menu, with regional detours like Oaxacan barbacoa lamb shank earning their keep. The cocktail list is long, the bottomless weekend brunch is the kind of thing people book twice, and nobody here is eating quietly.

Mexican
The tacos here do the talking, which is good because the décor has very little to add. TAQ is a casual Notting Hill cantina where the menu is short and focused: fish tacos, carnitas, tostadas, quesadillas, and churros to close. The cooking is more careful than the stripped-back room lets on, which is either a pleasant surprise or the whole point, depending on how cynical you arrived.
