Cuisines

  1. There's an enigmatic clock mounted across from the bar that has puzzled guests for decades, and the staff aren't telling. Dobson's is a French restaurant with old-school gravitas, the kind of place where business lunches stretch longer than planned and the mussel bisque is treated as a point of civic pride. Duck à l'orange and grilled lamb chops round out a menu that hasn't chased trends and seems quietly satisfied about it.

  4. An ornamental rope sculpture anchors the bar, tropical plants cradle the booths, and lanterns glow softly over decorative stonework, so the room earns its atmosphere before the menu arrives. This is an upscale Mexican restaurant with serious intentions: the kitchen pulls from across Mexico, landing somewhere between coastal and interior, with dishes like Dungeness crab enchiladas in tomatillo sauce alongside steak and wild prawns. The guava cheesecake closes things out well.

  8. Rank 85. Menya Ultra

    Noodle Shop

A tonkotsu-miso hybrid broth is the anchor at this no-frills ramen shop tucked into a Clairemont strip mall. The menu is short by design: a rich, porky house ramen and a spiced tantanmen are about the size of it, with springy noodles and a soft-boiled egg as the main decisions to make. Lines form fast, service moves faster, and the Michelin Guide has taken note of both.

  24. Warm wood, trailing greenery, and eclectic art give this California casual restaurant on Coronado's main drag the feel of a neighborhood spot that has figured out exactly what it wants to be. The menu leans heavily vegetarian without making a point of it, and the staff steers you toward good choices rather than just reciting them. It holds a AAA Three Diamond rating, which is a lot for a place where you can order an artichoke dip and feel right at home.

  28. The harbor view from the second floor runs from Coronado to Point Loma, which means you're picking at your salmon while watching container ships drift past. This is an upscale seafood restaurant where the fish comes straight off local boats and the room dresses to match. Steaks and roasted chicken hold down the menu for anyone who wandered in under protest. Save room for the citrus olive oil cake.

  33. Rank 85. Yanni's Bar & Grill

    Mediterranean

A neighborhood Mediterranean grill in Scripps Ranch where the wine list runs from rare cellar vintages to a house label the owner bottles himself in Fallbrook. The menu moves through steaks, lamb, fresh seafood, and chicken, and the service team treats tables like a dinner party they threw. The kind of place where regulars have a standing order and out-of-towners wonder how they've never heard of it.

    The awards

  34. Rank 134. 24 Suns

    Seasonal Noodle Shop

A former dive bar turned noodle shop in Oceanside, 24 Suns runs on seasonal instinct and pop-up energy, with a menu that rotates whenever the team feels like it. Snacks, dumplings, and shareable plates split the menu, and the wine list throws sake into the mix without making a fuss about it. The room is casual enough that ordering freely feels like the point, which it is.

    The awards

  35. Rank 134. Campfire

    Fire-Forward American

A custom-built 12-foot wood-burning hearth anchors this fire-forward American restaurant, which lives inside a midcentury Quonset hut with teepee-on-the-patio energy and zero apologies for the glamping aesthetic. Smoke touches most things on the menu, from grilled octopus to slow-cooked brisket. The DIY s'mores arrive over a small pile of live coals, which is either the most on-brand thing imaginable or the most on-brand thing imaginable.

    The awards

  36. Rank 134. Coasterra

    Modern Mexican

Perched on the tip of Harbor Island, this modern Mexican restaurant frames a panorama of downtown San Diego across the water that earns its own place in the evening's plans. The sprawling patio with a fire pit is where you want to be at sunset, though the glassed-in dining room holds its own after dark. Deborah Scott's menu moves between tableside guacamole and smoked beet tostadas without feeling conflicted about either end of the spectrum.

  37. Rank 134. Craft & Commerce

    Contemporary Gastropub

Taxidermy specimens on loan from the Natural History Museum share wall space with mounted trophies, giving this gastropub the look of a library that got lost on a hunting trip. The Contemporary New American menu leans hearty, with Asian inflections woven through comfort-food staples. The Michelin Guide has noted it, and the crowd skews stylish. Maybe leave your most ethically sensitive friend at the hotel.

  38. Rank 134. Great Maple

    American

A 1950s diner with a leather jacket on, Great Maple is a full-service American restaurant in Hillcrest that does brunch, dinner, and late-night with equal conviction. The Fruity Pebbles pancakes and maple-bacon donuts pull a crowd on weekends, while brisket popovers with poached eggs and béarnaise handle the late-night shift. Counter seats fill fast, parking is a project, and the Michelin Guide has taken notice.

  39. A chalkboard lists the day's fish at this tiny omakase counter, which keeps seats scarce and reservations non-negotiable. The 90-minute sushi experience moves through nigiri sourced from San Diego waters, Peruvian fishing boats, and Japanese suppliers, with a handroll menu waiting for anyone not quite ready to leave. The Michelin Guide has taken notice of this Convoy Street spot, which feels like an inside track even when the room is full.

    The awards

  40. Rank 134. Himitsu

    Sushi

Eight seats at a hinoki counter is the whole point at this discreet La Jolla sushiya, so a reservation is non-negotiable. The omakase format is the move, though à la carte runs from sashimi to maki with rice that regulars mention unprompted. The chefs talk through their fish and technique like they enjoy it, which they appear to, and the room, all greenery and natural wood, makes the whole thing feel quieter than the address deserves.

  41. Our Green Affair is a counter-service salad shop in Solana Beach where the menu is a pun-off and the bowls are the punchline. You'll find the Hot Chick, the Thai Me Up, and a Caesar called the Seize Her, which is a lot of wordplay to absorb before noon. Order at the counter, add toppings if the mood strikes, and join a lunch crowd in athleisure. Eater has named it among San Diego's best salads.

  43. Rank 134. Sovereign

    Modern Isan

The khao soi here swaps the usual chicken for duck confit, which tells you something about how seriously this East Village restaurant takes the Isaan cooking of Northeastern Thailand. The menu is short and the kitchen leans into that, making each dish with the kind of care that only works at small scale. The Michelin Guide has taken notice. Taro ice cream over coconut sticky rice closes things out on a note nobody argues with.

  46. Six tables, one hanging cactus, and a mole that traces the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade. Mesa Agricola is a counter-service taco and burrito spot in Escondido where the chef grows most of his corn about 12 miles away and mills it for the handmade tortillas. The menu looks spare until you read it carefully. The New York Times put it on their 2026 Restaurant List, which for a six-table lunch spot feels like a pleasant plot twist.

  47. Rank 145. Polite Provisions

    Cocktail Bar

A hundred-foot marble bar runs the length of the room, and the apothecary shelving, brass fixtures, and velvet accents make the whole place feel like a Victorian soda fountain that took a wrong turn into a Parisian atrium. This cocktail bar in Normal Heights has been an anchor of the San Diego drinks scene for ages, built around housemade bitters, syrups, and sodas long before that was a cliché.

The roll-up garage door, the metal finishes, and a few tables inside and out keep things tight and unhurried. The owner sources beans across Latin America and Africa and often pulls the shots himself. Old Woodys drifting past on the 101 supply the rest of the ambiance for free.

  59. Tucked into a residential pocket on the Encinitas-Leucadia border, this coffee shop shares a building with an art studio and has the accidental-discovery feel to match. Inside, polished concrete meets warm wood and pops of pink. The coffee program leans into mocktail-style signature drinks alongside seriously sourced Colombian and Ethiopian beans. 62. A block from the beach in Del Mar, Sbicca is a California casual restaurant with a sidewalk patio built for lingering over wine while the foot traffic does its thing. The menu runs from shishito peppers and Korean beef lettuce wraps to buttermilk fried chicken and herb-crusted halibut, the kind of range that keeps a table of four from arguing too long. Good for dinner before a walk down to the water.

  67. This is a loud French bistro in North Park that feels like it arrived on a flatbed from the Strip, minus the nightclub and the bottle-service tax. The steak is the move, and the pickle martini is a sentence you'll say out loud to your server. Bring friends who don't mind shouting across the table, then ask about the speakeasy upstairs, where a cognac and cold brew is the polite way to end the night.

  70. Bahn Thai is a small, casual Thai spot in University Heights, the sort where lunch costs about what you'd hope and the portions suggest the kitchen has never heard of restraint. You choose a dish, a spice level, and a protein, a three-step system so clear it practically has a diagram. The dining room is tiny, so most people grab takeout and eat in the car, on a bench, or with total conviction at their desk.

  71. Bluewater Grill is a seafood restaurant with a breezy terrace and a sourcing philosophy that means the fish has a better paper trail than most of the clientele. Lunch starts at noon, with midday specials like fish tacos, a crab BLT on sourdough, and a grilled fish sandwich. The menu also stretches to sushi, burgers, and salads, so the one person who orders a salad at a seafood place has a place to hide. Eater picked it for lunch in San Diego.

  72. Boards N' Beans is a walk-up coffee stand parked outside a Pacific Beach surf shop, which is the most San Diego sentence available. The menu includes butter coffees made with ghee and MCT oil, plus a banana bread latte that tastes like its name without going full dessert. Inside, you can buy house roasts and syrups, then admire the surfboards and maybe catch the board crafter at work behind glass.

  73. Rank 169. Bosforo

    Modern Turkish

The chef caps Bosforo kebap at fifty daily, so ordering early isn't optional so much as strategic. This modern Turkish restaurant in Normal Heights serves wood-fired hummus, hand-minced beef skewers, and lahmacun alongside homestyle dishes the chef grew up on but couldn't find a reason to put on a menu until now. The room draws a neighborhood crowd that clearly got there before you.

  74. Rank 169. Bronx Pizza

    New York American Pizzeria

This is a Hillcrest slice shop where the walls are covered in vintage New York memorabilia, in case the folded slices left any doubt about where its loyalties lie. The pies are classic New York style, with a build-your-own list that runs from broccoli to ricotta to eggplant. A slice, salad, and drink combo costs about nine bucks, and the room is roomy enough that nobody eats standing up. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

  75. This is a casual, order-at-the-counter cafe perched on a cliff above the Pacific, attached to a gliderport, so your sandwich comes with a floor show of hang gliders stepping off the edge. Wraps, sandwiches, and soup-and-half-sandwich combos run under $14, and you eat outside in whatever you wore to the beach. It closes early when the fog or rain shows up, which is also when the gliders call it a day.

  77. El Pescador is a working fish market in La Jolla that also happens to cook lunch, so you can order grilled fish at the counter and then eye the display case for tonight's dinner. Regulars treat it like a weekly errand, which is a reasonable way to live near the ocean. The fish goes between bread, onto a plate with rice, or into poke and chowder, all of it casual, fast, and easy on the wallet.

  78. Rank 169. False Idol

    Tiki Bar

  79. Fleurette is a dressy French-Italian dinner spot where the portions run large and the bone marrow turns up in more dishes than you'd expect. The room feels like an art museum, with floor-to-ceiling windows and sculptures hanging overhead. Getting there means driving to the far end of a business park, where the valet may be the only living person in sight, which somehow adds to the atmosphere.

  80. A National City coffee shop wrapped in mid-century breezeblocks, hanging plants, and jungle mural art, which is a lot of ambience for a place you can also order a latte at. By day it's a room of people with strong opinions about espresso, and some nights an R&B DJ turns up. The popups rotate with the week, the ginger thyme latte stays put, and there's a burger with crispy garlic chili peppers that coffee shops don't usually bother with.

  81. Three levels of Pacific views in La Jolla, each one feeling like a slightly different restaurant. George's at the Cove is a seafood institution that's been around forever, and the rooftop Ocean Terrace draws the kind of crowd that shows up before sunset and stays well past it. The menu runs toward fresh, coastal-California seafood, and the setting does a lot of the heavy lifting, which at this address is entirely fair.

  83. Guanatos is a tiny, unfussy Mexican grill in National City where lunch means a tostada piled with ceviche or octopus, then something heftier like a torta or a mound of fries buried under carne asada and marlin. The service is friendly in a way that suggests nobody here is in a hurry. On weekends there's fish soup, which the regulars treat as medicine, and the Eater lunch list has noticed.

  84. Rank 169. Il Giardino di Lilli

    Italian Coffee Shop

This is a La Jolla coffee shop that has dressed itself as an Italian villa, complete with trellised vines over a little alley and a table carved from a four-inch-thick door. The lattes arrive topped with a real flower bud, and prices run a few dollars above the usual, which is the cost of the scenery. Dog-walkers gossip outside while readers from the nearby bookstore claim the quieter nooks.

  86. A tree grows through the middle of the second-floor patio, which tells you something about the vibe here. Kettner Exchange is a bi-level progressive American restaurant in Little Italy where Asian techniques quietly run the kitchen, and the rooftop draws a crowd that came to be seen but stays for the food. Downstairs buzzes; upstairs breathes. The menu moves between crispy rice and dumplings with enough conviction that you forget this place doubles as a nightlife destination.

  87. Lestat's On Park is a 24-hour coffee shop in University Heights, named for the Anne Rice vampire novels, which explains the fake chandeliers, the peeling wallpaper, and the giant corner couch that seems to have outlasted several decades of hairstyles. There's no air conditioning and the decor never left the '90s. The baristas run grumpy but know their espresso, and the sandwiches are there for 3 a.m. emergencies.

  88. This is a coffeehouse on El Cajon Boulevard that treats the couch as a shared resource, and you may end up splitting one with a stranger from another generation. SDSU students fill the hightops with open textbooks and gossip, and a wall of broken clocks has quietly given up on telling anyone when to leave. It's open until 11pm every night, with omelettes and paninis on the menu and a cool-weather patio.

  89. Longplay is a listening-room coffee shop, which means you hand over your laptop ambitions at the door and get a rule sheet in return. The pitch is vinyl on a serious sound system, cold brew, and drinks that dress up like cocktails, think yuzu highball and a fluffy black sesame mochi. Hours are short, weekends only, and posted on Instagram, so check before you go and plan to arrive before last call.

  90. Madi is a bright, casual daytime spot on Grand Avenue that treats lunch as a bonus round and shuts the kitchen at 2 p.m. The menu runs on playful California cooking, which here means a half-pound patty melt on grilled sourdough and a chipotle chicken melt with pickled jalapeños. Expect counter-service prices, no dress code, and a brunch crowd lingering over the last of their coffee.

  92. Rank 169. Marta

    Fusion Mexican Coffee Shop

Marta is a neighborhood coffee shop planted where University Heights, Normal Heights, and North Park meet, which means it never has to pick a side. The mexican mocha latte arrives in a handmade clay mug, and the menu runs to Mexican-American fusion, like salmon al pastor on blue corn sourdough. Laptop people and book people share the room, and the macha salsa is the sort of thing you'll want to smuggle home in your tote bag.

  93. A small cut-out in the kitchen door lets you watch each dumpling wrapper get rolled, filled, and pleated by hand before it hits the boiling water. This tiny Chinese restaurant in a Point Loma strip mall specializes in dumplings from Liaoning province, alongside Dongbei beef noodle soup and rougamo flatbread sandwiches. The boba tea is made with muddled fresh fruit, which sounds like an afterthought until you order one.

  94. Mnemonic is a coffee shop whose colorful accent walls and grid-patterned tables make it look like the inside of a Mondrian painting. There are four pour overs on at any time, plus seasonal drinks like a grapefruit and cold brew number that tastes like an Arnold Palmer with a pulse. The few tables inside come with a one hour limit, so bring a book instead of a deadline. Balboa Park is close enough for a to-go cup and a stroll.

  95. Rank 169. Mom Kitchen

    Hong Kong Cantonese Café

Mom Kitchen is a cha chaan teng on Mira Mesa Boulevard, which means a Hong Kong diner where the menu runs long, the room runs plain, and the food shows up before you've finished getting comfortable. The noodles are made in-house, the drinks include hot Ovaltine and salted lemon 7-Up, and the roast duck hangs around for the same reasons you do. Cheap, fast, and a little maternal about clean plates.

  96. Rank 169. Muri

    Kurdish Coffee Shop

Muri is a North Park coffee shop where the Kurdish coffee arrives unfiltered, with fine grounds settled at the bottom like a small, caffeinated riverbed. The baristas will warn you before you order it, and they'll swap in a cappuccino if the hazelnut version isn't your thing. Baked treats like pistachio cheesecake share the counter, and the shaded patio fills with laptop people who have turned a Tuesday into an office.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
