The best American food in Seattle, according to the experts: The Infatuation, Esquire, and The New York Times have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Familyfriend comes out on top.

More Less

Beast & Cleaver and Lil Red's hold the next two places. Seattle Met shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation close behind.

  1. A barely-there sign on Beacon Hill marks this casual Guamanian restaurant and bar, which is either accidental humility or the universe's way of filtering out TikTokers (it has not worked). The menu follows the chef's biography through Filipino chicken adobo tacos and Guam-style corn soup, but the achiote-orange empanadas, stuffed with raisined beef and served in a pool of fina'denne', are what drew a James Beard semifinalist nod in 2025.

  2. Rank 2. Beast & Cleaver

    Whole-Animal American Steakhouse

By day, Beast & Cleaver is a Ballard butcher shop where you can walk out with chops and links for the home stove. After hours it turns into a whole-animal steakhouse under the alter ego "The Peasant," running a tasting menu, which is the sort of double life usually reserved for superheroes. Steaks, house sausages, and even the salads draw a meat-minded crowd, and the chef was a James Beard Emerging Chef semifinalist.

  3. Rank 2. Lil Red's

    Barbecue

The chef running this low-key Rainier Avenue to-go spot cut his teeth in the butcher shop that used to occupy the same building, and the meat knowledge shows. Brisket, burnt ends, and pull-apart pork ribs come with a choice of tomato-based house sauce or a Jamaican jerk concoction that starts complex and finishes hot. The New York Times named it among Seattle's 25 best restaurants. Save room for the rum cake.

  5. Rank 5. Grann

    BBQ-Indian fusion Cajun & Creole

Deep-fried puri shells arrive golf-ball-size and hollow, packed with cool pimento cheese softened by sweet onion jam, and that alone explains why Tacoma's Grann has Seattle making the drive south. The restaurant calls itself Southern BBQ, Creole, and Indian fusion, but the food lands somewhere past hyphenation, like a cuisine that simply grew up that way. Dramatic green walls and a tiger photograph that somehow matches the room give the dining room real personality.

  9. Heather Earnhardt's Southern-inflected restaurant now lives inside a historic coastal hotel in Tokeland, having migrated from its Capitol Hill origins. Cozy breakfast anchors the day, surrounded by farmhouse antiques and tchotchkes that feel genuinely accumulated rather than styled. Big buttery biscuits and fried chicken carried over from the original, joined by fried oysters from nearby Willapa Bay and local fish gone cornmeal-and-grits.

  11. Rank 11. Dreamland Bar & Diner

    American Cocktail Bar

The balcony patio goes by its own name, Carnelian Bay, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Fremont cocktail bar and diner. Margaritas come in disco balls, Jell-O shots taste like homemade jam, and pimento cheese arrives on fried saltines. The steamed burger at happy hour has a cult following among people who take their diner food seriously while pretending not to.

  16. Rank 16. Milk Drunk

  17. Rank 18. Outsider BBQ

    Texas Barbecue

A Turkish American tech worker turned pitmaster drives an hour a day just to source the right bread for his chopped beef sandwiches, which tells you everything about the commitment level here. This is a Texas-style BBQ beer bar in Fremont where the brisket, salt-and-pepper only, runs through the smoker for upward of twelve hours and comes out glossy and dark-edged. The sweet pickles in the potato salad are made in-house purely to be an ingredient, not a garnish.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
