  6. Rank 106. APT 115

    Wine Bar

The address reads like an apartment number because it is one, a converted unit that functions as an intimate wine bar with a short, serious list leaning toward small producers from both hemispheres. You can stop in for a glass and a charcuterie board or commit to the multicourse tasting menu, where the kitchen moves through things like Hokkaido scallop with red curry and duck cassoulet. The wine and the food compete for your attention in roughly equal measure.

  7. Rank 106. Comedor

    Modern Mexican

The courtyard seats fill first when the weather cooperates, which tells you something about how this modern Mexican restaurant in the Central Business District reads a room. Industrial materials, polished wood, and leather keep things cool without trying too hard. The menu moves between bone marrow tacos and more traditional aguachile without apology, and the tamal de chocolate at the end earns its place on the bill.

  8. Rank 106. Launderette

    Contemporary Diner

A former laundromat on Holly Street, now a bright, buzzy neighborhood restaurant where the patio fills up fast on good weather days. The menu leans creative New American, the cocktail list runs to mezcal negronis and other inventive drinks, and happy hour makes the whole thing an easy excuse to show up on a Tuesday. The Michelin Guide has it on their radar, which tracks.

  9. Rank 106. Siti

    Modern Southeast Asian

Siti sits at the base of the Frances Inn in East Austin, its interior a warm mix of textures that takes Singaporean shop houses as a loose starting point. The neighborhood restaurant pulls from the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia, with a Filipino-rooted chef guiding the menu. Everything is built for sharing, and the char kway teow gets a duck confit leg dropped on top, because why not.

    The awards

  10. Rank 106. Tare

    Modern Sushi

There's no sign on the second floor of a North Austin office building, just an attendant at the door who knows you're coming. Inside, a dark granite counter sets the stage for a kappo-style omakase built around dry-aged nigiri, fish sourced from Japan with the occasional Texas curveball, think salsa macha or chicharron in the mix. It reads like a cultural argument conducted very politely, one piece at a time.

  11. Rank 106. Terry Black's BBQ

    Central Texas Barbecue

The slow-smoked prime brisket gets sliced to order at the counter, and the bone-in beef ribs are roughly the size of a small child. This is a Central Texas BBQ shop in the classic mode, seating first-come in a well-worn roadhouse big enough to absorb the line that forms outside. Pork ribs and house sausage round out the pit, with potato salad and green beans holding their own on the side.

  12. Rank 112. Habanero Mexican Cafe

    Old-School Mexican

Habanero is an old-school Mexican cafe on Oltorf that does breakfast and lunch and then goes home, so dinner plans need to be made elsewhere. The fajitas come ranchera style, tossed with charred jalapeños, onions, and tomatoes, and the room fills with longtime Austinites and recent transplants who've learned to arrive early on weekends. The Infatuation lists it among Austin's lunch spots, and the huevos gringos are a decent consolation for the wait.

  14. Rank 113. Matok Bakery

    Middle Eastern Bakery

Za'atar buns and feta-filled croissants are the draws at this Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-inspired bakery on South Lamar, which started as a viral pop-up before finding a permanent home. The leap from online orders to a brick-and-mortar is a big one, and plenty of pop-ups don't make it, so the line out front tells you something. Pastries, breads, and cakes round out the case.

  17. The dining rooms are draped in lush plants and Mexican folk art, and for a moment you forget you're in a neighborhood off North Loop. This fine dining institution has been around forever, making the case for regional Mexican cooking long before it was fashionable, with dishes rooted in Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz, and the Yucatan. Dress accordingly, order the cochinita pibil, and let the room do what it does.

  20. Stonewashed walls, seating in every configuration known to humanity, and enough plants to make a botanist emotional set the scene at this coffee shop on East 12th. The front half runs buzzy and social while the back stays quieter, so you can choose your own adventure. The menu covers the usual cafe drinks alongside a few specialty brews, plus breakfast sandwiches and housemade pastries. You can also buy the ivy you've been staring at all morning.

  28. Rank 129. Bufalina Due

    Pizzeria

The wine list here gets talked about almost as much as the pizza, which is saying something given how good the Neapolitan pies are. This Brentwood pizzeria and wine bar keeps things simple: blistered crusts, quality toppings, and an affordable bottle selection that skews interesting rather than obvious. Rotating specials lean seasonal, and the appetizers hold their own. Casual enough for a weeknight, fun enough that you stay for another glass.

  35. Rank 129. Intero

    Contemporary Italian

The pastry chef doubles as a chocolatier, which is either a warning to pace yourself or a reason to skip straight to dessert. This East Cesar Chavez neighborhood Italian spot runs on local farms and whole-animal cooking, so the menu shifts with the season. Pastas and anything with duck tend to anchor whatever's on offer. Before you leave, at least pick up some of the handmade chocolates at the counter.

  36. A pond out front sets the tone at this casual Korean barbecue spot in North Shoal Creek, where the room feels genuinely domestic in the best sense. Tabletop grills handle galbi and duck, a long banchan spread fills the gaps, and the traditional menu runs to budae jjigae, kimbap, and kimchi jeon for anyone not in the mood to tend a fire. Cold sake or yuja ade to drink, group tables throughout.

  46. Rank 129. Uchi

    Japanese

The chef spent years learning to speak, read, and write Japanese before opening this fine dining restaurant on South Lamar, and that rigor still shapes every plate. Uchi's thing is raw or lightly cooked seafood paired with unexpected partners, citrus, fruit, even goat cheese, and it helped build Austin into a serious destination for Japanese-influenced cooking. The New York Times named it among Austin's best restaurants.

  50. Rank 158. Posse East

    Burger Joint

The queso has been pulling in UT students and neighborhood regulars since before most of them were born. Posse East is a campus-adjacent sports bar on Duval with wood-paneled walls, neon signs, a live music stage, and a covered patio that fills up on game days. Outside, a lone palm tree gives it an oddly Californian silhouette; inside, it is pure Texas roadhouse. Cold beer, solid burgers, and that queso keep the cycle going.

  51. A gas station kitchen in West Campus that somehow renders the question "what do you want to eat?" basically unanswerable, because the menu covers Mexican food, deli sandwiches, breakfast, hot dogs, and burgers without flinching. The burritos are massive, the tacos come street-style, and the sandwiches run Boar's Head meats on sourdough with house chipotle mayo. A reliable feed before, after, or instead of whatever else you had planned.

  52. A cookie cart parked at the Webberville Food Truck Park, where the rotating drops mean the selection changes often enough to justify returning before you've digested your lunch. The chocolate chip comes with sea salt, the Hot Honey Cornbread brings a little heat, and previous runs have included a Fruity Pebble Cheesecake Cookie that people still talk about with an air of grief. One cookie is technically shareable. Most people leave with several.

  54. Rank 159. Coquito

    Caribbean

The little neon sign out front is easy to miss, but the Kelly green interior and relic-inspired decor make up for it fast. Coquito is a Latin fusion cafe on East Seventh that runs a day-to-night double life: cold brew spiked with coquito and tortas by afternoon, DJs and a packed dance floor after dark. The name comes from Puerto Rico's traditional Christmas drink, which tells you something about the warmth of the place in general.

  57. Rank 159. Komé

    Contemporary Sushi

  58. A matcha truck parked near UT that grew out of its co-founder's cancer recovery, which is about as meaningful an origin story as a café can have. Ceremonial-grade matcha is the baseline, with rotating flavors like pistachio and rose moving through quickly among students and regulars. In a city where food trucks are practically a civic institution, this one keeps the vibe calm and the drinks deeply, conspicuously green.

  59. Rank 159. La Mezca

    Speakeasy

The Veracruz All Natural team tucked a mezcal and tequila speakeasy into Mueller, and the agave nerd crowd found it immediately. La Mezca is a cocktail bar where staff can take you deep into single-village production or just shake you a very good mezcal margarita, depending on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go. Taquitos from the Veracruz kitchen handle the rest.

  60. A cafe and bar where the grounds do half the work: twenty tree species, a working garden, and a stream running through a South Austin property that makes it surprisingly easy to justify a third coffee. The team behind Veracruz All Natural and DEE DEE partnered up here, so the food skews Mexican and Thai alongside the cafe menu. Come for the laptop-friendly shade, stay because it turns into a bar once the afternoon earns it.

  61. Rank 159. Lynny's

    Bakery

Sixties decor and biscuits are the whole agenda at this kitschy East Austin cafe. The brick-and-mortar on East 12th is the sit-down sibling to a food truck, and it earns its slow-brunch crowd with diner coffee that won't punish you and biscuits that split into sweet and savory directions depending on your mood. A place designed for lingering, which, in a city that keeps speeding up, is a minor act of defiance.

  62. Rank 159. Old Jerusalem

    Middle Eastern

The wood-fired oven handles both meat skewers and cheesy pizza pies, which tells you this Northwest Hills Middle Eastern spot has range. Hummus, falafel, baba ghanouj, and shawarma anchor the menu, and the breakfast service alone sets it apart from the usual halal shortlist. The bright, patio-fronted room draws soccer watch parties and families in equal measure, which means it's already building the kind of regulars that take years to earn.

  63. The pool table shares the room with people in stilettos, which tells you most of what you need to know about Parley. It's a neighborhood bar on East Cesar Chavez run by two Irishmen who seem unbothered by the idea that a bar can be dim and comfortable and also genuinely cool. Screens handle both the big game and arthouse film. The drinks run strong, the food leans comfort with a global detour, and the dress code is apparently optional.

  64. The address, a half-address on Airport, tells you something about the attitude before you walk in. The Lost Well is a punk rock bar and live music venue that relocated from Webberville when the landlord's patience ran out, and the new room landed so naturally it feels like the place was always here. Bigger than before, still loud, still dive-y in all the right ways, it draws a crowd that knows every band on the bill without checking the poster.

  76. Rank 177. Chinatown

    Classic Chinese

  77. A daisy painted on the facade of what looks like a converted lobby is all the sign you get, so consider this your heads-up. Daisy Lounge is a speakeasy tucked into a Circle C Ranch strip mall, far from the usual Downtown clusters, with built-in bookshelves, armchairs, and a multi-floor floral interior that reads more cozy library than hidden bar. The cocktail menu runs classics alongside house originals. Book ahead.

  78. Rank 177. Desilicious Cafe

    Indian Café

Desilicious is a casual South Indian cafe on Parmer Lane where the menu runs past 80 kinds of dosa, chapathi, and parotta, plus breakfast staples like idly and pongal. The room does not compete: metal pitchers of water wait on every table, the air conditioning is more of a suggestion, and the TV plays Indian pop videos through tinny speakers. Order the chai, then keep coming back until you've worked through the list.

  80. The line at this Rosedale brewpub sometimes spills into the parking lot, which tells you most of what you need to know. It's been around forever, pours a serious range of craft beer, and keeps the food exactly where it belongs: fish and chips, hot dogs, chili cheese fries. Grab a spot at the big bar or drag yourself out to the patio, where the furniture looks assembled from good intentions and spare parts.

    Pizzeria

Parked near a gas station in North Loop, Feral is a food truck doing two distinct styles of pizza: thin, crispy sourdough rounds and pan pies with the sauce on top, both finished with garlic oil. The pan pizza is the more interesting argument. Order ahead if you're impatient, because the devoted regulars who've adopted this place keep the line moving at its own pace.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
