  8. Rank 118. Ruby

    Cocktail Bar

The buzzer panel at the entrance includes one for the Embassy of Georgia, which you are advised not to press. Inside, this cocktail bar spreads across two floors of candlelit rooms with rugs, Chesterfield sofas, and enough tucked-away corners to disappear into for an entire evening. The vibe is old living room, the cocktails are the reason you came, and table service means you never have to leave your corner to prove it.

  9. Rank 121. Bird

    Cocktail Bar

The record spins before you order, and at Bird that's not an accident. This Frederiksberg neighborhood cocktail bar runs weekly DJ nights with jazz at the core, but the music stays warm rather than loud, more living room than club. The highball list is the thing to work through, and the selections are more considered than the format usually demands. Named a Discovery by The 50, it's the kind of local bar that doesn't feel local only to the locals.

  10. A vegan bistro near Nordhavn where the kitchen grows its own mushrooms and sends foragers out for the rest. The room is simple, the atmosphere lively, and the tasting menu moves through enough techniques to make you forget you're being virtuous. The sparkling kombucha is house-made and worth ordering. Staff who know the menu inside out keep things from feeling preachy. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  11. Rank 121. Botschaft

    Austrian German

A mosaic-tiled floor and a sculpted green ceiling set the tone at this German and Austrian restaurant near the Søerne Lakes, which tucks a small cocktail bar behind the main room for pre-dinner drinks. The menu leans into the classics, pork dumplings, venison stew, and fried calf's head for the adventurous, with shredded pancake to close. The wine list stays loyally in-region. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

    The awards

  12. A former coal cellar beneath Landgreven, divided into small rooms with soft beige tones that somehow make a basement feel like someone's well-appointed home. This modern Danish restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and doubles as a love letter to Bornholm, from the produce to the glassware. Lunch is reinvented smørrebrød; dinner runs to set menus or à la carte, with a serious cellar leaning heavily toward Bordeaux and Burgundy.

    The awards

  13. Rank 121. Mêlée

    French

Closely packed tables and a team that actually seems glad you're there set the tone at this French neighborhood restaurant in Frederiksberg. The menu runs classic, think onglet with marrow and shallot, cassoulet with duck and smoked sausage, and the portions land generously. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks: this is the kind of French cooking that doesn't ask you to be impressed, just fed well.

    The awards

  14. A basement bistro tucked just off Strøget, where the lunch crowd comes for smørrebrød and schnapps and the evening flips to a four-course set menu. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks: the cooking is grounded in Danish seasons, local and often biodynamic, without any of the fussiness that tends to follow that sourcing story around. Cosy in the way that basements naturally are, and louder than you'd expect.

  15. The dining room sits inside a 1940s building by Kay Fisker, and the mid-century bones are still intact, which makes the designer furniture on show feel less like a showroom and more like a statement. This hotel restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand for modern cooking that moves from brunch plates into dishes with real ambition. The crowd tends toward the quietly design-literate, which tracks given the neighborhood and the chairs.

    The awards

  16. A chandelier made of salvaged metal desk lamps sets the mood here, and the rest of the room follows: dark panelled walls, black low-hanging lights, slates chalked with vegetable drawings. It's a modern restaurant that grows its own organic produce on nearby fields and builds careful, full-flavoured combinations from them. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks. The name, for the record, comes from the old Danish Broadcasting Corporation across the street.

    The awards

  17. The glass façade spills light onto Store Kongensgade, and the open kitchen keeps the room loud in the best sense. Rebel is a contemporary bistro with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, tables packed close enough that you'll learn your neighbor's dinner order, and décor that leans toward the worn-in end of shabby-chic. Go tasting menu or graze through small plates. Either way, the locals who fill it nightly seem to have no complaints.

    The awards

  18. The open kitchen anchors the room, and in a minimalist Copenhagen dining room inside a handsome historic building, that's a deliberate statement. Restaurant Frank is a casual creative spot where modern plates lean subtly inventive without announcing it. The wine list runs notably deep for the price point, which earns its own conversation. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and easy to see why the regulars followed it when it moved around the corner.

    The awards

  19. Glass-fronted wine coolers line the walls of this industrial-feeling bistro in Nordhavn's red-brick new build, which tells you something useful before you've even sat down. The cooking is unfussy and generous, the kind that pays quiet attention to seasoning and cooking times rather than making a fuss about it. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the sort of neighborhood restaurant every neighborhood wishes it had.

    The awards

  20. Rank 121. Sanchez

    Mexican

The mezcal list alone reads like a field guide to agave, which tells you what kind of place this is. Rosio Sanchez, who came up in serious kitchens, runs this lively Mexican small-plates spot on Istedgade, and the cooking leans into bold, unapologetic flavors from her heritage. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand. On weekdays you can stop in just for tacos; any night you can let the kitchen decide with their five-dish menu.

  21. Rank 133. Balderdash

    Cocktail Bar

    The awards

  22. Artworks by Danish painters line the walls, most of them quietly for sale, which gives this candlelit fine dining room on Bredgade a salon-in-the-original-sense quality: somewhere people actually talk to each other. The kitchen leans into haute cuisine with seasonal Danish ingredients executed with the kind of care that involves more chefs than you'd expect. It holds a Discovery nod from The 50.

    The awards

  23. Rank 133. Tata

    Cocktail Bar

The menu rates each cocktail by booziness, which is either very helpful or a dare depending on your evening. This cocktail bar inside the Sanders hotel takes its name from the red velvet curtain at the Royal Danish Theatre next door, and carries the premise through: low light, a long list of classics and house drinks, and an atmosphere that makes whatever you're doing feel more significant than it probably is.

    The awards

  24. Rank 133. Victory

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar on the top floor of Paper Island's 25hours Hotel, with the kind of fireplace and deep armchairs that make you forget you came for the view. The drinks list reads like a classics menu until you notice the foraged Danish produce quietly rewriting each recipe. It's a pub that got serious about its bar program without making a fuss about it, which is a very Copenhagen way to do things.

  26. Rank 137. Abigail & Co

    Seasonal Nordic

The facade is still covered in hats, a leftover from the building's former life as a milliner, so the restaurant hiding behind it feels like a genuine discovery. Inside, it's dim and candlelit with tables pressed close together, giving it the mood of a speakeasy that decided to serve dinner. The cooking follows a Nordic-meets-everywhere logic, unfussy and seasonal, with the occasional playful twist, like a tuna dish you finish painting yourself.

  27. Rank 137. Amalie

    Traditional European

    The awards

  28. Rank 137. Aotori

    Japanese

Eight seats at a counter, a binchotan grill smoking quietly in front of you, and skewers of Danish chicken coming off it in quick succession. Aotori is a yakitori bar from the team behind Kappo Andō, and it keeps things focused: local chicken cuts and vegetables, plus offal when the kitchen has it. The sake list by the glass runs deep, and a back room called Akaton handles tonkatsu for anyone who showed up in a pork mood.

    The awards

  29. The awards

  30. A converted bread warehouse near the Kastellet citadel, Kiin Kiin VeVe is the younger sibling of the Nørrebro original, running a tasting menu that moves through Thailand region by region. The tour opens with snacks from north, northeast, centre, and south, plus an edible rice cracker map, which is exactly the kind of detail that sounds gimmicky until it arrives at the table.

    The awards

  31. A lobster tank in the corner, sea-themed wallpaper, and royal portraits watching over the room: this old-school seafood restaurant on Gammel Strand has been around forever, occupying the site of Copenhagen's original fish market. Bouillabaisse, turbot on the bone, and a wine list heavy on champagne and burgundies keep the menu suitably serious. The granite bar counter facing the open kitchen makes it comfortable for solo diners too.

    The awards

  32. A 20-seat U-shaped counter wraps around an open kitchen just off the Nyhavn Canal, so dinner at Magny feels less like a restaurant and more like watching someone cook in a very beautiful apartment. The wood facade, exposed brick, and net curtains half-hiding the dining room do a lot of atmospheric work before you've even sat down. Modern multi-course tasting menu, seasonal all the way through.

    The awards

  33. Rank 137. MaMeMi

    Roman

Roman-style pizza in the Vesterbro neighborhood, thin-crusted and cooked consistently, with a menu that reads like a tour of the trattoria classics: carbonara, amatriciana, cacio e pepe, all reinterpreted as pizza. It ranks on 50 Top Pizza Europe, for what that's worth to the people who track such things. Outdoor tables appear in summer, service is low-key and responsive, and the appetizers tend to surprise.

  34. A restored Victorian glasshouse inside Tivoli Gardens, which means yes, you'll need a theme park ticket to get here, so factor in time to wander the gardens. Lunch runs smørrebrød and a three-course menu; dinner shifts to a seasonal tasting menu and modern Danish à la carte. The terrace looks out over the lake, and the whole room has a faint fairytale quality that the food, to its credit, takes seriously.

    The awards

  35. Rank 137. Restaurant Palægade

    Danish European Brasserie

The chairs on the pavement terrace are covered in sheepskin, which tells you something about the Danish relationship with outdoor dining. Inside, the tiled floor, brass fittings, and oak chairs modeled on Finn Juhl's Reading Chair make this one of the prettier brasseries in Copenhagen. Lunch means smørrebrød, traditional and modern; evenings shift to contemporary Danish cooking, with a hand-crafted dessert trolley doing the rounds.

  36. A casual neighborhood restaurant near the university where students and their grandparents somehow end up at adjacent tables without anyone finding it odd. The cooking is unfussy modern European, moving between meat, fish, and vegetables without treating the last category as an afterthought. The room is stripped back and simple, which keeps the attention where it belongs.

  38. Rank 150. Strom Bar

    Cocktail Bar

A marble-topped bar wraps around the back of this sunken cocktail bar in central Copenhagen, with cozy corners and secluded booths for when you want to disappear. The room runs warm and loud, more lively conversation than hushed reverence, which is a refreshing stance for a bar that takes its drinks seriously. Difford's Guide gives it five stars, and the unpretentious atmosphere makes that easy to believe.

  39. Rank 151. Flere Fugle

    Pizzeria

A pizza spot in Copenhagen's Nørrebro-adjacent northwest that runs from morning coffee through late dinner, Flere Fugle does something modest and slightly absurd: it leans Nordic on a form that is already Italian, so you end up with red beetroot and goat cheese on your pizza and somehow it makes sense. The room is big and Scandinavian-spare, and the garden out back has a leafy, unhurried quality that the city's summer rewards generously.

  40. Rank 151. Little Brother

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A Neapolitan pizza spot staffed largely by young Italians, Neapolitans among them, which goes some way toward explaining why the cornicione here rises the way it should. Little Brother is compact and cozy, the kind of room that fills up with chatter fast. The menu runs from faithful classics to a few more inventive combinations, all built on decent ingredients. Listed among 50 Top Pizza Europe's Excellent Pizzerias.

  41. A canal-side pizzeria on one of Copenhagen's oldest waterfronts, Pizzeria Luca runs an open kitchen that gives the room the easy hum of an Italian tavern. The dough ferments long enough to give the crust real presence without weighing you down, and the menu moves between Roman classics and more adventurous combinations. Italian wine, good beer, and tiramisu round things out sensibly.

  42. Rank 154. Capa

    Steakhouse

Dry-aged Northern European beef anchors the menu at this Copenhagen steakhouse, where the kitchen treats fire as a creative medium rather than just a cooking method. The beef programme runs on provenance and precision, with cuts chosen for character and handled without fuss. The wine list pairs Nordic natural producers against European benchmarks. It ranks among the World's Best Steak Restaurants, and the room feels exactly ambitious enough to believe it.

  43. Rank 154. Ourselves Alone

    Cocktail Bar

  44. The bar at Salon 39 occupies the lower level, and it is genuinely small, the kind of place where snagging a seat feels like a minor victory. By night it fills fast, and large groups get turned away so the lucky ones who squeeze in can actually enjoy themselves. Café by day, bar and restaurant by evening, it pulls a crowd that keeps coming back, which tells you something about how the drinks land.

  45. Ring the bell at the unmarked black door at number 16, not 19, a misprint that may or may not be deliberate. Inside, this speakeasy cocktail bar runs on dim lighting, pressed tin ceilings, bare brick, and bartenders in bow ties doing their best 1920s straight-face. Get comfortable, because the real exercise is talking your way into The Bureau, a second, even more hidden room within the first hidden room.

  46. Rank 158. Madam Chu's Bar

    Chinese-themed Cocktail Bar

  47. Rank 158. The Barking Dog

    Cocktail Bar

  48. Rank 158. Ubar

    Japanese Cocktail Bar

The long bar here is the real competition for the fine-dining floor upstairs, and most nights it wins. This cocktail bar occupies the ground level of a Japanese-French restaurant, with a double-height ceiling and mood lighting that cycles through primary colors like a very sophisticated lava lamp. The drinks lean Japanese, pulling in shochu, sake, shiso, and Calpis in ways that make the menu feel like a genuine kitchen project rather than a theme.

  49. A steep climb to the door opens into a wine bar that keeps things pleasantly simple: chequerboard floors, an old leather sofa, candles on bare wooden tables, and about 30 wines chalked up behind the counter. The kind of place where the list changes and nobody pretends otherwise. Snacks arrive without ceremony. The second room, warmer and a little looser, is where the evening tends to drift.

  50. Rank 164. 1105 Bar

    Cocktail Bar

Named after its postal code, 1105 is a cocktail bar that plays nightclub without quite committing to the dance floor, which is probably for the best. The island bar runs like a catwalk through a long, narrow room, and the bartenders in white coats and bow ties behind it seem to know it. The crowd is well-dressed and aware of being watched, which in Copenhagen means they look effortlessly good about the whole thing.

  51. Rank 164. Brass Monkey

    Tiki Bar

  52. Rank 164. K Bar

    Cocktail Bar

A white letter K hanging outside is the only signal that you've found this small, low-lit cocktail bar tucked along the canal at Ved Stranden. The room is essentially one bar with a couple of loungey side pockets, done in a monochrome scheme that keeps the focus on the drinks. The founder built her name on housemade infusions and is credited with helping shape the Copenhagen cocktail scene before that was a thing people said.

  53. Rank 164. Oak Room

    Cocktail Bar

The name conjures oak paneling and leather armchairs, but this cocktail bar on Birkegade is curved, contemporary, and very much alive. The U-shaped room wraps around an oak-topped bar counter, which is probably where the name actually comes from, though Danish speakers will note the street name and wonder what took everyone so long. The crowd figures it out fast enough, and the cocktails give them a reason to stay.

  54. Semi-subterranean and narrow, Zefside fills fast once the weekend hits, with Edison bulbs strung above a long bar and a DJ doing their best to turn a bar into a club without technically being one. The name means nothing in Danish and is somehow pronounced "Southside," which tells you something about the vibe. Thirty-something professionals pack in, drink in hand, doing that polite standing-shuffle that passes for dancing when the ceiling is low.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
