Sections

The best boulangeries in France, according to the experts: Le Fooding and The Infatuation have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Boni comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Paris.

More Less

Boulangerie Aristide and Boulangerie Nouvelle hold the next two places. Le Fooding shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.

  18. Rank 18. Mamiche

    Boulangerie

Mamiche is a boulangerie where the line out the door is part of the architecture, so bring patience and a napkin budget. The croissants run so buttery they turn the paper bag translucent before you reach the sidewalk. Babka and a cinnamon bun that perfumes half the block share the case with brioche buns and sandwiches like mackerel rillettes on grain bread. It's women-run, and cash-light cheap.

  19. Rank 19. Poilâne

    Boulangerie

This is a bakery on a Left Bank street, and it sells enormous round sourdough miches stacked in tight rows behind the counter, with a mild tang and a dense crumb that suits a grilled cheese. The branded tote bags and bread knives make it look like a souvenir stop, but people queue for the loaves. The apple chaussons look like turnovers and aren't too sweet. A bread chandelier hangs in the back, which is a lot to ask of flour.

  20. Rank 20. Boulangerie Moderne Rabineau

    Moderne Boulangerie

A neighborhood boulangerie in the 5th that you may recognize from a certain Netflix show, which explains the selfie line and the branded shopping bags. The croissant is shatteringly flaky with a browned-butter edge and a light, airy middle, and it's been written up by The Infatuation among the city's top croissants. The apple tart, slow-cooked compote under thin caramelized slices, is the other thing people order. Pay at the counter, eat on the sidewalk.

  21. Rank 20. Le Boulanger De La Tour

    French Boulangerie

Le Boulanger De La Tour is a neighborhood bakery in the Latin Quarter, and its croissants are puffed up like the Michelin man, minus the hot air. The crust tastes of buttered toast with a faint bitter edge, and the apple chausson is long enough to need its own seat, filled with compote caramelized to roughly the color of the Eiffel Tower. It's a pastry-and-pavement breakfast, cheap and quick, with the Seine nearby.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
