The Best Seafood in France

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best seafood in France, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, The 50, and Le Fooding have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Christopher Coutanceau comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Paris.

More Less

La Marine and Le Coquillage hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Le Fooding next.

Eat, change section
  1. The sign above the door reads "chef and fisherman," and the kitchen takes both titles seriously, holding three Michelin stars from a dining room that looks straight out onto the Atlantic. This is fine dining built around whatever the sea gives up that day, turbot and sole treated with precision, mackerel and sardines treated with the same precision, which is a quiet form of argument. The scallop pithiviers, in season, has its devotees.

  2. Rank 1. La Marine

    Seafood

A fishing village at the top of a small island off the Vendée coast is an unlikely home for three Michelin stars, yet here we are. Alexandre Couillon runs a creative seafood restaurant where the tasting menu follows the tides and the seasons, pulling coastal plants, fire-cooked fish, and fermented vegetables into something that feels elemental rather than theatrical. The mackerel and the flame-grilled lettuce have become things people talk about afterward.

  3. A three-Michelin-star dining room inside a quiet manor house overlooking the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, where the tasting menu is named "At the whim of the wind and the moon," which tells you everything about the register. The chef's cooking is rooted in Brittany, built on seafood and spiced with an almost obsessive lightness of touch. The apparent simplicity is the whole trick: the flavors land with a precision that takes time to fully register.

  4. Rank 1. Le Petit Nice

    Mediterranean Seafood

The dining room sits a few metres from the water, and that proximity is the whole premise: Gérald Passédat holds three Michelin stars and builds his fine dining menu almost entirely around what the Mediterranean gives up on any given day, over 65 species across the seasons. Sauces come from the heads and cooking juices; nothing gets wasted. The set menu devoted to his take on bouillabaisse is the move, and the sea view makes you feel like it ordered the food.

  5. The bright blue façade on rue de Saint-Simon is easy to spot, and inside it's a chic, unfussy brasserie where the menu tilts almost entirely toward the sea. Pierre Gagnaire holds a Michelin star here, and the kitchen applies that same restless precision to shellfish and line-caught fish rather than the grand tasting-menu format. The room draws a quietly confident crowd who know exactly where they've booked.

  6. A Clamato is a Bloody Mary with clam juice, and yes, you can order one here at this seafood wine bar, the sibling to Septime around the corner on rue de Charonne. The menu is short, the fish and vegetables arrive simply cooked on sharing plates, and the whole thing takes its cues from American East Coast oyster bars filtered through a Paris sensibility. No reservations, so the line outside is part of the deal. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  7. A two-Michelin-starred restaurant perched over the small port of Gravette on the Loire estuary, where the menu follows the catch rather than the calendar. The chef grew up farming this stretch of coast and still works closely with local producers, which means the seafood arrives with a kind of provenance that's hard to fake. The room is modern and polished, the service cheerful without being stiff.

  8. Rank 8. Amicis

    Seafood

A tasting-menu restaurant tucked between Allées de Tourny and Place des Grands-Hommes, Amicis holds a Michelin star for cooking that leans toward fish and seafood handled with quiet precision. Lunch loosens into something more bistro-ish, which is how you sneak into a room like this without the full evening commitment. The wine list leans into the obvious geography and does it well. Bordeaux shopping bags optional, but the crowd suggests otherwise.

    Modern Seafood

Picture windows over the Mediterranean, the Château d'If floating in the distance, and a Michelin-starred kitchen buying its catch directly from local fishermen. Auffo is a seafood-forward modern restaurant perched above the Vallon des Auffes, where the chef builds vegetable and seafood dishes around sauces that do most of the talking, including a red wine bouillabaisse jus that rewrites the local brief. The room is calm, neutral, and quietly serious.

    Modern Seafood

A Michelin-starred seafood restaurant just outside Saint-Brieuc, with windows looking out over the green banks of the Gouët River. The chef keeps close ties with local fishermen and market gardeners, and the cooking leans into Brittany's coastline, pairing briny seafood with seasonal vegetables and a wine list that runs heavily biodynamic. The room is calm and unhurried, and the front-of-house runs like something you'd want to study.

    Modern Seafood

The restaurant takes its name from the local trout, and the sourcing policy is just as literal: no ingredient crosses the pass unless it comes from the region, coffee and chocolate included. This one-Michelin-star tasting menu spot in Céret is the chef's homecoming project, and the room was finished by local ironworkers and ceramicists. The cooking is modern and seafood-forward, with amuse-bouches that suggest someone in the kitchen is having a good time.

  14. Rank 8. Jean-Marc Pérochon

    Modern Seafood

Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Atlantic at this Michelin-starred hotel restaurant on the Vendée coast, where the chef spent years sailing before he started cooking. The menu leans heavily on fish and shellfish from the local auction, prepared in a spare, technique-driven style that lets the ocean do most of the talking. Challans poultry and local vegetables fill the gaps when the sea takes a breath.

  15. Rank 8. L'Abissiou

    Modern Seafood

The name comes from local dialect for the small fish children used to catch in the port, which tells you something about the kitchen's priorities. This Michelin-starred fine dining room sits on a quiet back street near the covered market, navy and white walls keeping things crisp and contemporary. The team trained at serious houses and it shows in the sauces, where sardines and scallops get equal attention as the seasons dictate.

  16. Rank 8. L'Alter-Native

    Modern Seafood

Vegetables from an aquaponics garden anchor the menu at this Michelin-starred seafood and plant-forward restaurant in Béziers, where Gilles Goujon, the chef behind Auberge du Vieux Puits, has built something quieter and closer to home. The cooking leans generous and unfussy, drawing on southern French produce with a low-waste philosophy running through it. A terrace-patio opens up when the sun obliges, which in this part of France is most of the time.

  17. A 19th-century mansion perched above the Loire, looking out over what used to be the shipyards, sets the scene for this Michelin-starred fine dining room in Nantes. Seafood

A one-Michelin-star restaurant inside a hotel perched above the port of Carry-le-Rouet, where the terrace looks out over the Frioul archipelago and the sea basically shows up on every plate too. The chef does a tight six- or eight-course menu that leans hard into seafood and vegetables, with the kind of quiet technical confidence that comes from time at Villa Madie. The room keeps a spare, coastal feel, which is either restraint or letting the view do the decorating.

  20. A Michelin-starred restaurant in the middle of Sancerre wine country where the menu is almost entirely seafood, which takes a certain confidence when you're landlocked in the Loire Valley. 22. A private gate and a winding cliff path separate this fine dining room from the Côte d'Azur circus outside, which is rather the point. The terrace hangs over the Mediterranean between Nice and Monaco, palms swaying in that insufferably beautiful way. The chef's cooking follows the same logic as the setting: local seafood and garden herbs, nothing showy, everything precise. One Michelin star.

  23. A country house opposite the estuary, with a glazed wine cellar holding some 350 references and enough natural light to make the room feel like part of the landscape outside. This is a Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant in Brittany, built around seafood and modern French cooking. The chef also runs a bakery and an annual festival pairing live music with street food, which suggests someone who finds a single obsession insufficient.

    French Seafood

A former girls' boarding school on the Normandy coast, now a Michelin-starred boutique hotel-restaurant where the seafood-led menu tracks whatever the Manche gives up that day. Wild fish and shellfish arrive in delicately crafted form, and the kitchen pairs them with tea and sake as readily as wine, including a full Gong fu cha ceremony if you're curious. 26. The dining room wears its animal tapestries and black-and-ochre palette like a well-tailored suit, and the terrace looks out over La Canche lighthouse. This is the fine-dining room inside an old-school Le Touquet luxury hotel, where the kitchen works a seafood-forward creative menu, think caviar, lobster, langoustine, handled with the kind of precision that earned a Michelin star. La Table du West next door handles the lighter appetite.

  27. Rank 8. Le Pily

    Creative Seafood

Floor-to-ceiling glass walls that look straight out over Cherbourg harbour set the scene at this Michelin-starred seafood restaurant on the old revolving bridge. The menu is entirely meat-free, built around Cotentin lobster and shellfish, prepared with the kind of precision that reads as Japanese-influenced without announcing itself. The cooking is delicate and quietly inventive, with yuzu and soy appearing where you might least expect them.

  28. Rank 8. Le Saint Placide

    Modern Seafood

Tucked into Saint-Servan, the quieter quarter the locals actually use, away from Saint-Malo's summertime crush, this is a Michelin-starred fine dining room where the chef has built a reputation on Breton fish and seafood, sharpened by local vegetables and a confident modern hand. His wife runs the front and clearly takes the wine list and the table setting as seriously as the kitchen takes the plate.

Arched windows frame the Île de Batz across the bay, and the stone fireplace does the rest of the heavy lifting inside this one-Michelin-star dining room at Hôtel Le Brittany. 31. A Michelin-starred fish restaurant tucked into a tiny Lake Geneva port, where the chef's brother-in-law is a sixth-generation fisherman whose nets supplied this morning's catch. This is a modern dining room where one brother cooks and the other tends the market garden, which tells you roughly where the vegetables on the plate come from. 80. The chef here moonlights as a fisherman, which tells you something about how the seafood arrives. This is a formal restaurant at a clifftop estate on the Breton coast, where the ocean view is impossible to ignore and lobster anchors a menu that moves through langoustines, John Dory, and whatever the day's haul suggests. Surf-and-turf pairings run throughout, fragrant and carefully plated. Lunch keeps it simple; evenings go further.

  88. The terrace looks straight out over Sauzon harbour, which is reason enough to book a table before you've seen the menu. This hotel restaurant on Belle-Île-en-Mer leans hard into the island's larder, with lamb from Bangor, fish from a local fisherman, and spider crab appearing in more forms than you'd expect. The room was redesigned by a noted architect and plays Breton black-and-white against jolts of bright colour, so it doesn't feel like the average seaside dining room.

    Breton Seafood

The name means "iodized," which should tell you where the kitchen's loyalties lie. This creative restaurant in Vannes puts Brittany's coastline at the center of every plate, pairing seafood with unexpected inland instincts: eel lacquered in pomegranate molasses, langoustine with pork fat and a gutsy gravy. The two chefs met in a Paris kitchen and brought something quieter and more personal back to the region. Pared-back plating, bold flavors, no fuss about it.

  97. Floor-to-ceiling windows face the beach huts and open sea, so the sunset does half the decorating at this coastal modern restaurant in Mers-les-Bains. Interior designer Caroline Tissier handled the rest in shades of blue and green, which feels either on-the-nose or exactly right, depending on your tolerance for thematic commitment. The chef runs a set menu built around Picardy seafood, scallops from small boats and pot-caught langoustines, kept simple and letting the ingredients argue for themselves.

    Seafood

A big glass conservatory right on the port at Le Croisic sets the scene at this old-school seafood restaurant, where the menu has barely needed to change because the Atlantic keeps delivering. The family has been running it forever, and the kitchen leans into the classics: sole meunière, whole seabass in a salt crust, scallops in season, and a lobster bisque that arrives with actual chunks of lobster in it.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
