The 20 Best Brasseries in France

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best brasseries in France, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, The Infatuation, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Le Violon d'Ingres comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Paris.

More Less

Akashon and Rēpu hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.

  2. Rank 2. Akashon

    Modern Brasserie

The cable car to 3,842 meters leaves from right outside, which sets the bar for what you're doing here. Akashon is the modern brasserie inside the Héliopic Hotel, with untreated wood, granite, and a mountain-view terrace that earns its keep. The cooking runs more ambitious than the setting suggests, and the Michelin Bib Gourmand confirms it. During the UTMB ultramarathon, the menu pivots to feed the runners, which tells you something about the crowd.

  4. Rank 4. Les Parisiens

    Brasserie French

Les Parisiens is a hotel brasserie in Saint-Germain, all velour banquettes and brass-edged mirrors, serving the sole meuniere and veal tartare you'd expect, at prices that suggest the sole had a good agent. It's a safe bet for parents, dates, or anyone you want to impress without scaring. The address is where James Joyce finished Ulysses, which gives literary types something to mention before the millefeuille arrives.

  7. Rank 6. Brasserie Chavant

    Brasserie French

The baroque decor, all gilded and ornate, sets the tone before you've looked at the menu. Brasserie Chavant is an old-school institution in central Grenoble, running the full Gallic brasserie playbook: eggs mayo, beef tartare, duck magret. Then the kitchen pivots slightly and serves langoustine ravioles with foie gras and truffle, which is either an elegant non-sequitur or exactly why you came. Either way, the room looks like it approves.

  8. Rank 6. Brasserie du Louvre

    Lyonnaise Brasserie

Floor-to-ceiling windows frame one of the great Paris postcards: the Comédie-Française, the Louvre, and the Conseil d'État all at once. This is a classic brasserie, doing the full canon with snails, sole meunière, and some properly Lyonnaise intrusions, pike quenelle among them. In fine weather the terrace under the Haussmannian arcade fills fast, and you can hardly blame anyone for ordering slowly.

  15. The terrace hangs over the Dordogne valley from a balcony off a 19th-century freestone manor, which is a strong opening move for any restaurant. Inside, herringbone floors, velvet seats, and white moulded walls split the difference between country-house and genuinely chic. The chef runs brasserie fare at lunch and fine dining after dark, with a travel habit that shows up in the occasional Asian note threading through otherwise French-leaning plates.

  16. A converted presbytery with red-brick walls and a kitchen garden that feeds the menu the same morning it's picked. This is a modern French restaurant where the chef draws on time in serious kitchens to produce food that feels rooted in the surrounding countryside rather than showing off about it. The dining room keeps things simple, letting the plates do the talking, and the garden terrace in season makes the drive out to Lecelles feel entirely logical.

  17. Rank 6. Pluma

    Brasserie

Tawny walls, cane chairs, and a terrace perch directly above the Grande Plage make this brasserie inside the Hôtel Café de Paris feel like someone's well-funded idea of a Latin American beach club. The menu swings from snacks and comfort food to grilled meats and more composed plates, a range wide enough to suit whoever wandered in off the sand. Ossau-Iraty shows up in the cordon bleu, which is either reassuring or very Basque Country, depending on your mood.

  20. Brasserie Bellanger is a new-wave Paris brasserie where the wallpaper, deco chandeliers, and red velvet chairs all seem to be competing for your attention. The half roast chicken comes with a mountain of frites built for dragging through the jus, and even the leek vinaigrette shows up charred and piled with bitter greens. It's a proper sit-down dinner, and plenty of those velvet chairs are held for walk-ins.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
