The 11 Best Steakhouses in France

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best steakhouses in France, according to the experts: Le Fooding, the Michelin Guide, and The Infatuation have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. La Table de Charrou comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Paris.

More Less

Betty Beef and Le Severo hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Le Fooding next.

  1. A stone farmhouse on the Causse de Limogne, where two former sommeliers came home from New Zealand and learned to butcher from the proprietress's father. The result is a meat-forward restaurant that runs nose to tail on local animals from the surrounding departments, smoked, grilled, simmered, or pressed into terrine. On Sundays the old bread oven fires up for a leg of lamb. The wine list runs to 200 labels, organic and biodynamic among them, and she knows every one.

  3. Rank 3. Le Severo

    Steakhouse

Le Severo is a thirty-seat steakhouse in the sleepy back end of the 14th, run by a former butcher who was dry-aging before France had much of an opinion on it. Steaks arrive charred on the outside and left alone otherwise, no sauce required. The maitre'd is stern and watchful, and you will finish the fat. It's closed weekends, which in Paris counts as a flex, so plan a midweek date.

  4. Jean-François Piège's fire-led restaurant in the 1st arrondissement turns a charcoal grill and open flame into something that feels almost philosophical. This is a steak restaurant with a distinctly French sense of discipline: serious sourcing, careful ageing, and beef that arrives composed rather than showy. Warm materials and soft light keep the room feeling polished but alive. Pommes soufflées on the side, a smart Burgundy on the table, and service that is Parisian in the good sense.

  10. Rank 10. Anahi

    Steakhouse

The mosaic floors and mirrored ceilings are original to the former butcher's shop, which is a good start for an Argentine steakhouse in the Marais. Mauro Colagreco and his partner in beef bring cuts from four continents through a high-heat broiler, and chimichurri arrives like it means it. The room runs on Latin warmth and Parisian cool in roughly equal measure, and the Malbec list keeps pace. It holds a spot on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list.

  11. Rank 11. Le Relais De Venise

    French Steakhouse

This is a steak-frites place with no reservations, so you join the line outside before the doors open at 6:45, and the room runs on one question from the waitresses in black dresses and white aprons: how would you like it cooked? Steak is the entire menu, and it arrives under a mustardy, butter-heavy sauce that people argue about the ingredients of. Second helpings come around on their own, which is either a perk or a dare.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
