The Best Mexican Food in France

Sections

The best Mexican food in France, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and Le Fooding have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Oxte comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Paris and Lyon.

More Less

Beatriz and Comer hold the next two places. Le Fooding and the Michelin Guide show up on more of this list than any other guide.

  1. Rank 1. Oxte

    Contemporary Mexican

A small, Michelin-starred dining room near the Étoile where a Mexican chef and his wife-and-partner cook French ingredients through a Mexican lens, the kind of pairing that sounds like a festival concept but arrives as something far quieter and more precise. The menu shifts with the seasons, the spicing is vivid, and the mole is the real through-line. Book early; the room is tiny and the word has been out for a while.

The open kitchen is visible from the pedestrian street before you've even opened the door, which sets the tone: nothing here is hidden or fussy. This casual fusion restaurant in Bourg-en-Bresse is run by a French-Mexican couple, both trained pastry-makers, who cook French ingredients through a Mexican lens, mole, macha salsa, salsa verde and all. The desserts land with particular conviction. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  9. Rank 9. Alebrije

    Mexican

Carla Kirsch trained at the Paul Bocuse Institute and did time at Troisgros before opening this colorful Mexican restaurant in the Croix-Rousse district. Old rafters run overhead, splashed with color, and the menu shifts every month, drawing on seasonal French ingredients filtered through the cooking of her native Veracruz. Chili peppers turn up in the dessert, which tells you something about her sense of humor. Mexican wines, tequilas, and mezcals round out the drinks list.

  10. Rank 9. Le Limonadier

    Creative Mexican

Fermentation jars line the shelves of this old La Croix-Rousse café, which doubles as a serious creative restaurant upstairs. The chef, a Mexican transplant who came up through Lyon's fine-dining circuit, runs a deliberately short menu built around flame cooking, organic local vegetables, and biodynamic wines. The combinations are precise without being precious, and the plant-forward cooking has a logic that makes the brevity feel like a feature, not a limitation.

  11. Rank 9. Le Mezquité

    Fusion Mexican

Cochinita pibil cooked over mesquite wood sits alongside mole poblano with duck at this fusion restaurant in Le Touquet, where the menu is a direct product of its owners' geography: he's from Valenciennes, she's from Puebla. The result is French regional ingredients run through Mexican methods, sauces, and smoke, with a fondness for the latter that turns up across the menu in ways you won't quite expect.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
