The best coffee shops in France, according to the experts: Le Fooding, The Infatuation, and 50 Top Italy have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Dreamin’ Man comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Paris.
More Less
Holybelly and Motors Coffee hold the next two places. Le Fooding shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.
-
Rank 1. Dreamin’ Man
Japanese
Dreamin' Man is a tiny Japanese-leaning coffee shop on Rue Amelot that looks like a flea market stall that learned to pull espresso. There's a vintage wooden bar, brick walls, chipped-paint chairs, and shelves crowded with knick-knacks nobody is allowed to rearrange. It sits well off the tourist path, which is how you end up lingering over a pour-over, the thing to order here, and forgetting your next plan.

Rank 1. Holybelly
American
Holybelly is a Canal Saint-Martin brunch café where Paris queues for pancakes, a sentence that would have baffled the city a generation ago. Savory or sweet, they're fluffy, and the espresso drinks hold their own beside them. There are no reservations, so a 30-minute wait is the cost of admission unless you arrive at nine or after the three o'clock lull. Solo diners can slip past the line by heading straight for the bar.

Rank 1. Motors Coffee
Coffee
Motors is a small specialty coffee shop near Les Halles, all exposed brick and a galvanized steel counter that looks like it was built to survive a car part. The beans come from around the world, and the menu runs from espresso tonics to a washed Gesha with floral notes. The pastries are made in-house, including a black sesame cinnamon roll, and it opens Sundays, when half of Paris has quietly disappeared.

Rank 1. Our House
Coffee
Ten seats around a U-shaped counter make this a tiny Japanese lunch canteen, run by the people behind the Dreamin' Man coffee shop a few doors down. The menu is four teishoku set meals and a couple of donburi, each tray arriving with miso soup, rice, and pickles. No reservations and no dinner, so arrive early and be prepared to get to know your neighbor's elbow. It made The Infatuation's list of best new Paris restaurants.

Rank 1. Ten Belles 6
Bakery
This is the Rue du Cherche-Midi outpost of a coffee shop that helped teach Paris to care about flat whites, back when espresso here meant a thimble of regret. It's a bakery-café with natural wood, white walls, and almost nowhere to sit, so laptop people should come off-peak and everyone else should plan to stand. Cake slices, baguette sandwiches, and savory pies cover lunch, and the bread gets its own following.

Rank 6. Chanceux Galande
Coffee
Chanceux Galande is a small coffee-and-toastie shop tucked behind an antique wood-and-glass facade a few steps from Notre Dame, which is a lot of old Paris for a place that mostly sells grilled sandwiches. The mushroom melt on rye is the one people write home about, and The Infatuation put it on a Paris sandwich list. The high backless stools and bright lights make a park bench in Square René Viviani the smarter seat.

Italian Coffee Shop
Tucked into the Passage des Panoramas, this Italian café and restaurant from the Alajmo family occupies a former engraving studio whose gilded interiors the family wisely left alone. Coffee comes as it would in Venice, pastries and charcuterie boards fill the afternoon hours, and the kitchen runs a proper à la carte alongside a tasting menu built around seasonal Italian produce. The desserts have a way of making the detour feel inevitable.

Coffee
Café Lomi is a coffee roaster's café in the 18th, far enough from any monument that nobody wanders in by accident. The beans they roast also supply hundreds of hotels and restaurants around France, so the cups are less a side project than the whole point. Wooden beams and exposed silver pipes give it a New York loft look, while the laptop crowd gives it the hum of a student union with better espresso.

Café Nuances is a coffee shop in the 1st arrondissement that still wears the old grocery's sign, with "beurre" and "oeufs" spelled out on a marble façade that has no butter or eggs to offer. Inside, the Art Deco marble is the main attraction, along with flat whites and pistachio lattes. It makes a tidy pause near the Louvre, and the beans come in a branded sack for taking the souvenir home.

This is a coffee shop that doubles as a cycling clubhouse, which explains the lycra-adjacent clientele clipping in before a ride up to Versailles. It sits in the Marais a few steps from the Seine, serving coffee, waffles, and juice, with bike tours on the side. English and French get shuffled together at the tables, and solo travelers rarely stay solo past the first espresso, whether or not they own a bike.

Noir is a coffee shop with enough locations that you're rarely far from one, which is handy after a morning of crossing bridges. The Île Saint-Louis original sits on the little island between the banks, usually with a single barista at work, so expect to wait and call it a scenic pause. Another branch has two floors and a spiral staircase that will end up in somebody's photos. Cheap, quick, and strictly a coffee stop.

Sample Cafe is a coffee shop with a DJ booth, and the DJ is on duty daily, spinning old-school R&B and hip-hop among records and speakers of assorted sizes. Bring a friend or a solo mood, but leave the laptop and the novel at home. The coffee is a standard espresso or latte, no riffs, because the real order here is a decent cup and a seated two-step. The Infatuation put it on a Paris coffee shop list.

The Beans On Fire is a two-level coffee shop in Montmartre that opens at 8am, which in Paris counts as an act of defiance. The cappuccinos and flat whites are the draw, with pastries as backup. Grab the window seat and watch tourists photograph the corner mini mart from Amélie, or head to the basement, where the wifi is and the sightseeing isn't. It's also a reasonable place to recover from the climb to Sacré-Coeur.
