The 100 Best Bistros in France

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best bistros in France, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, The 50, and Le Fooding have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. La Scène comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Paris.

More Less

Amarante and Parcelles hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Le Fooding next.

  1. Menus here are structured as "acts," which tells you most of what you need to know about Stéphanie Le Quellec's ambitions at this two-Michelin-starred modern French restaurant near the Champs-Élysées. The cooking is technically serious but the room reads casual, which is apparently the whole point. Sauces lean on vintage sherry vinegar, wines by the glass come poured from magnums or jeroboams, and the front-of-house team manages to make all of it feel unforced.

  2. A traditional bistro near Bastille with red leather banquettes, a tiled floor, and a single waiter who handles the whole room without visible effort. There's one seating a night, so it's a dinner you plan around, not one you squeeze in. The menu leans offal, with sweetbreads that come with roughly a stick of butter and a pig's trotter, though the charred Kintoa pork won't make anyone feel judged.

  3. Gilded ceiling, vintage floor tiles, and a copper counter that looks lifted from a prewar film set: this classic bistro in the medieval Marais has been dressed this way forever and shows no interest in changing. The cooking leans the same direction, old-school French comfort done without irony. The room fills with the kind of regulars who know not to bother with the menu.

  4. A Gascon bistro in the 7th that looks like a boutique hotel lobby, all glossy black and moody corners, and serves vol-au-vent the way your grandmother would if your grandmother had a drinks cart. Staffers from the nearby National Assembly fill the dozen or so tables, so book ahead. The stuffed cabbage and the profiteroles, sauced at the table, round it out, and the Seine is a short walk off.

  5. Rank 5. La Virée

    Neighbourhood Bistro

Formica tables and terrazzo floors in a former bouchon near Guillotière, reworked into a neo-bistro with a firm 1970s aesthetic and zero apology for it. The kitchen turns out modern, sharing-friendly food, and the front-of-house obsession with natural wine shapes the whole meal as much as anything on the plate. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, which fits: generous and clever without the stiff back.

  6. Tiny bistro à vins near Gare du Nord, which tells you the neighborhood is unglamorous and the room is tight. A chalkboard menu that changes daily swings between old-school French comfort food and quietly inventive combinations, with the wine list pulling serious weight alongside both. Book a few days out, because the locals already know, and they are not moving.

  7. Rank 7. Dandelion

    Modern Bistro

A waxed-concrete bistro on a quiet tree-lined square in the 20th, Dandelion is the kind of neighborhood spot that makes you wish you lived two blocks away. The chef came up through Septime and brings that precision to a short menu that wanders confidently across influences, pairing raw prawns with kimchi and ginger without breaking a sweat. The room is relaxed and the service matches it. Le Fooding has taken notice.

  8. Rank 7. Les Collonges

    Modern Bistro

A century-old bistro at the foot of Montmartre that a young chef has quietly taken over and made his own. The short menu rotates often, leans modern, and always leaves room for a few vegetarian plates. The wine list is similarly edited, with prices that don't punish you for ordering a second glass. Regulars have clearly already figured out what the neighborhood is just catching on to.

  9. Rank 9. Automne

    Seasonal Japanese Bistro

A Michelin-starred modern bistro in the 11th, where the room is plain and the cooking is anything but. The chef trained at some of the most rigorous kitchens in France before opening this small, unshowy space, and the restraint shows up on the plate: seasonal ingredients handled precisely, flavors that land clean. The kind of place where the modesty of the surroundings makes the food feel like a quiet argument you can't really counter.

    The awards

  10. Rank 9. Les Agitateurs

    Modern Bistro

A small, lively bistro on rue Bonaparte where the menu names alone are enough to make you curious, and the food backs up every bit of it. The chef, a Passage 53 alumnus, works entirely with local suppliers to produce creative, technically precise cooking that's more playful than precious. The room buzzes, the service is seamless, and the chef occasionally delivers dishes himself. It holds a Michelin star.

  11. Rank 11. AHPĒ

    Bistro

The name spells out the first letters of the four seasons, which tells you something about how seriously the kitchen tracks the market. This bright bistro outside Biarritz's center has caramel walls and cheerfully mismatched furniture, and the chef leans hard into fermentation, plancha cooking, and open flame. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, it pulls a relaxed crowd happy to eat whatever the season has handed over that week.

  12. Rank 11. Bombance

    Bistro

Stone walls and an open kitchen set the scene at this relaxed modern bistro in Rennes, where the menu swings confidently between roasted pak choi with paprika sabayon and skate wing with langoustine jus. The name roughly translates to feasting with friends, and the room delivers on it, with counter seats, shared plates, and a well-curated list of natural and biodynamic wines. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  13. Rank 11. Café des Musiciens

    Niçoise Mediterranean Bistro

A short, market-driven menu in Nice's Musicians' Quarter, where the cooking changes with what looked good that morning. This is a neighborhood bistro with Australian roots and a Niçoise soul, earning a Michelin Bib Gourmand for hearty, unfussy plates served by the chef's partner, who runs the room with the ease of someone who genuinely likes being there. Natural wines, affordable lunches, and no dish on the menu that needs an explanation.

  14. Rank 11. Chez Pierrette

    Contemporary Bistro

A contemporary bistro perched over the Garonne Canal in a stone village that looks like it was put there specifically for postcards. The young couple running it has filled the room with polished vintage finds and built a menu that swings between nostalgic and quietly inventive. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks. Come hungry and sit where you can see the water.

  15. Rank 11. Gribiche

    Bistro

  16. Rank 11. Solelh

    Latin American Bistro

A bistro with a double terrace in the heart of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue's Carré des Arts, Solelh earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for food that earns it without making a fuss about it. The chef works an open kitchen and a binchotan grill, coaxing aged beef and squid over white charcoal while the Provençal light does what Provençal light does. A tight, mostly regional wine list keeps things grounded. Lunch here can easily become dinner if you stop paying attention.

  17. Rank 11. Tohu Bohu

    Modern Bistro

  18. Rank 18. Sain

    Bistro

A shelf of natural wines to take away, a crate of organic vegetables from the family farm, and a short menu that changes with whatever came in that morning: Sain is a café, canteen, and grocery rolled into one. The cooking is unfussy and direct, the kind that makes you wonder why more places don't just do this. Laid-back service keeps the room unhurried, even when it's full.

  19. Rank 19. 19 Saint Roch

    Creative Bistro

Black and white floor tiles lead to a stainless steel counter overlooking an open kitchen, which is exactly where you want to sit. This creative bistro in the 1er is Pierre Touitou's latest project, and he's the chef who helped define the new Parisian bistronomy wave. The cooking leans into North African and Mediterranean flavors with a light touch, and natural wines fill the list without apology.

  20. Rank 19. Le Petit Banc

    Lyonnaise Bistro

Red Skai banquettes, bistro mirrors, and old wooden floors set the tone at this casual bistro tucked beneath the Château de Noirmoutier. The team brought their Lyon roots to the island, and the menu plays that straight: charcuterie from Lyon alongside Vendée produce, on a set menu that turns over often enough to keep regulars guessing. It eats like a bouchon that took a wrong turn at the Atlantic and decided to stay.

  21. Rank 19. Minore

    Bistro

A casserole pot of artichokes, morels, beef marrow, and foie gras tells you everything: this is a Paris bistro that takes itself seriously without making you feel you should, too. The former Abri chef runs the kitchen while a dedicated bartender minds a cocktail list that holds its own. Share plates, tapas snacks, or something more serious, the format bends to your appetite. The patio fills up the moment the sun appears, as it always does in the ninth.

  22. Rank 19. Patine

    Bistro

Exposed brick, retro details, and an open kitchen put the room squarely in classic eastern Paris bistro territory. The cooking is traditional French done with real care, the kind where the brill actually tastes like brill. Natural and organic wines fill the list, and the whole thing has the low-key confidence of a neighborhood place that has nothing to prove to you.

  24. Rank 19. Suffren

    Bistro

Bright green tiles punch through the raw concrete and exposed pipes of this Marseille bistro, which leans into the industrial look without any apparent apology. The kitchen ignores the city's trendier bistronomy scene and sticks to hearty classics, leeks with bottarga, French onion soup, grilled skirt steak. A cheerful young team keeps things moving even when the room fills up, and the wine list favors small producers and Lyonnais labels.

  25. Behind a plain façade and wicker chairs, this natural-wine bistro in the 11th keeps its chalkboard menu seasonal and just fussy enough to feel new. The leeks skip the usual vinaigrette, the steak tartare picked up Italian habits, and mains arrive with real sides, so nobody has to fill up on bread. It's open Mondays, which explains the off-duty chefs at the next table.

  26. Rank 25. Cadoret

    Bistro

Cadoret is a corner café in the 19th that spends the day serving coffee to people with laptops and Wordle streaks, then quietly turns into a proper bistro at mealtimes. The lunch prix fixe is cheap, the evening menu is French with a few international detours, and the open kitchen is too small to fit a pastry chef. The staff and the young neighborhood crowd are so relaxed that licking a plate is basically house style.

  27. This bistro with the candy-cane striped awning sits across from Gare de l'Est and takes French regional cooking seriously without turning it into a museum. The plates borrow from all over the country and get a little rewired along the way, which is a relief if you've had your fill of butter served alongside ceremonial radishes. The terrace faces the station at sunset. It's no Eiffel Tower, and the locals who fill it seem fine with that.

  28. Chez Marius is a neighborhood bistro in the 10th where mounted boar heads and a very cross taxidermied fox supervise your natural wine. The daily-changing menu wanders between French, Italian, and Asian ideas, and the small plates arrive in such quantity that the tables seem to be reconsidering their life choices. Mostly locals fill the room, so practice pointing at someone else's dinner and saying "comme eux."

  29. Exposed brick, terrazzo tables, and industrial lamps give Pristine the feel of a New York coffee shop that got lost and ended up in the 9th, which is exactly what the owner intended. It's a plant-forward bistro where the kitchen chases the deep, umami-laden flavors of classic French cooking using mushrooms, grains, and vegetables rather than the usual suspects. A little meat and fish still appear on the menu, for the unconvinced.

  30. Rank 30. Le Baratin

    Bistro French

The chalkboard menu changes daily at this small wine bar in Belleville, where Argentine-born, self-taught chef Raquel Carena has been cooking the kind of bistro French food that Paris chefs apparently eat on their nights off. She has a fondness for offal and fish, and a palate that runs tart and sweet-sour. The room is old Belleville bohemian, which in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood means it is now doing double duty as a time capsule.

  31. The terrine of cabbage and garlic arrives in portions that suggest nobody here has ever heard of restraint, which tells you most of what you need to know. This old-school bistro near Ledru-Rollin has been feeding devoted regulars rustic dishes from Berry and the Ardèche for decades. The founding patron's personality is still all over the room, even when he isn't. A place this stubbornly itself feels almost defiant in modern Paris.

  32. Rank 32. Le Pantruche

    Modern French

The name comes from 19th-century slang for Paris, which sets the tone: this is a neighbourhood bistro in the 9th that leans into a worn-in, vintage look without feeling like a theme park. The chef runs a short, seasonal menu in the bistronomic mode, with a Grand Marnier soufflé that turns up regularly and earns its place. A red awning shades a few pavement tables. The Michelin Guide has awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  33. The marble-topped bar and the noise hit you at the same time, and both are part of the deal at this narrow Marais bistro. A classic French lineup runs through rillettes, andouillette, and chicken with morels, with frites alongside every main and a chocolate mousse that the room seems to order unanimously. The wine list keeps conversations hopping between tables, and the whole thing has the easy, loud energy of somewhere that's been having a good night for years.

  34. Rank 34. Le Maquis

    Bistro French

House-made pasta and pork belly cooked in cider share a menu that wanders cheerfully between southern France and Italy, which is about as Parisian as it gets. This relaxed neighborhood bistro sits in a quiet corner of the 18th, well away from the Sacré-Coeur crowds, and the room fills with locals who clearly have no intention of sharing the address. Unpretentious, unfussy, and selected by the Michelin Guide.

  35. Rank 35. L'Ami Jean

    Traditional French

L'Ami Jean is a crooked, rattling Left Bank bistro where the furniture doesn't match and neither does the volume, since the chef's baritone carries over every table. The cooking leans hearty and meaty, with game in season and portions that treat the Parisian small plate as a rumor. The rice pudding arrives in a wooden bowl with a serving spoon you'll quietly claim as your own. Tasting menu runs about €98, and booking ahead is wise.

  36. White tablecloths, a chalkboard menu, and servers who carry world-weariness like a second apron: Bistrot Paul Bert is the Paris neighborhood bistro that every other Paris neighborhood bistro is trying to be. The steak-frites with Cognac and peppercorn sauce is the order everyone at the next table already has. Classic French cooking, honest portions, and a room loud enough that no one hears you order the côte de boeuf for one.

    Steakhouse

Le Severo is a thirty-seat steakhouse in the sleepy back end of the 14th, run by a former butcher who was dry-aging before France had much of an opinion on it. Steaks arrive charred on the outside and left alone otherwise, no sauce required. The maitre'd is stern and watchful, and you will finish the fat. It's closed weekends, which in Paris counts as a flex, so plan a midweek date.

  53. Rank 53. Au Coin des Pucelles

    Alsatian Bistro

A winstub in the old Strasbourg sense, where the menu leans more Alsace bistro than museum piece: game terrine from the Ried, pikeperch with beurre noisette, a vol au vent that means it. The chef also runs Au Vieux Couvent in Rhinau, and the wine recommendations reflect that pedigree. Regulars have known this address for decades, and they're not sharing the secret loudly. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  54. Rank 53. Baca'v - Boulogne

    Modern Bistro

A sibling to a Paris address, this modern bistro in Boulogne-Billancourt earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand with the kind of cooking that makes you feel like someone's grandmother grew up in Limousin and went to culinary school. The chef leans into bistro classics, vol-au-vent, pâté en croûte, braised cabbage, done with enough care to feel personal rather than nostalgic. Large picture windows keep it from feeling like a cave, which is more than most bistros manage.

  59. Rank 53. Café A

    Bistro

The brioche pain perdu with ice cream and caramel sauce has its own following, which tells you something about the direction here. Café A is an all-day bistro inside Maison Aribert, open from breakfast through dinner and doing Sunday brunch, running on the idea that grandmother's recipes, done carefully and priced fairly, are the whole argument. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which fits the room perfectly.

The cooking is light-handed and precise without announcing itself as such, which is exactly the trick.

The team set out to revive the regional cooking they grew up with, so expect tomatoes done properly, aioli that holds its own, and a raïto sauce that makes a case for staying local. 79. A wine shop on one side, a bistro on the other, and a list of over 200 labels that makes it hard to leave Gaillac without a bag that clinks. This cheerful, light-filled spot in the town center doubles as a wine bar and restaurant, with an open kitchen turning out generous bistro plates, regional charcuterie, and a truffle menu when the season cooperates. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

    Bistro

A bistro counter facing the Luxembourg Gardens, where the couple behind the name (it means "both" in Spanish) run an open kitchen that mixes Thai, South American, and European instincts on the same short menu. The chef did a season of Top Chef; his Venezuelan co-chef did Bangkok and London. Together they cook food that feels personal rather than programmatic, in a room that's friendly enough to make you forget you're in the 6th.

    Modern Bistro

Perched next to the Cap Leucate lighthouse with the Marine Natural Park of the Gulf of Lion spread out in front, this modern bistro takes its name from a small endemic flower that blooms on the headland in spring. The menu runs on fresh local seafood, gilthead bream from just offshore, wild prawns off the plancha. Classic desserts get a generous, slightly indulgent treatment. A casual, sun-bleached lunch kind of place.

  86. Rank 81. Astore

    Contemporary Bistro

The chef trained at a fine arts school before picking up a knife, and it shows in the way a plate of pork, aubergine, and garlic lands with quiet intention. This contemporary bistro in a blink-and-miss-it village square is run by a couple: he cooks with local produce, she handles service and wine with a background in art history. The room is unassuming, the food grounded, and the whole thing has the feel of a project someone thought about carefully.

  91. Rank 81. Aux Lyonnais

    Lyonnaise Bistro

Floral tiling, red leather booths worn to a warm patina, and flea-market curios on every surface set the scene at this old-school Lyonnaise bouchon transplanted to the second arrondissement. Alain Ducasse has had the keys for a while now, but the kitchen stays honest to the classic fare that made Lyon's canteen tradition worth stealing in the first place. Hearty, unfussy, and a little theatrical in the best Parisian way.

  93. Rank 81. Brut maison de cuisine

    Contemporary Bistro

Shelves lined with jars of fermented vegetables and cookbooks set the mood before a single plate arrives. Brut is a small, modern bistro on the Blois quayside with just a handful of tables, an open kitchen, and a short menu that shifts with the seasons. The chef leans on local producers, natural wines, and flavor combinations bold enough to make you look up from your glass.

  94. Rank 81. Brutal

    Modern Bistro

Raw concrete pillars, an open kitchen behind industrial glass, and electronic music kept low enough that you can actually talk: this neo-bistro on a quiet Presqu'île corner has a look it commits to fully. The chef comes up through some serious Lyon kitchens and cooks seasonal food with sharp, restless combinations. Lunch runs simpler; evenings get more ambitious. The name is a bluff, and the room is in on the joke.

  97. Rank 81. Castel de Très Girard

    Contemporary Bistro

A former wine press in a Burgundy village is now a contemporary bistro with a terrace and garden view. The modern menu runs to clever pairings, and the kitchen clearly enjoys itself, but the wine list is the real reason to linger: deep in regional labels, with small appellations and great vintages poured by the glass. Lunch and dinner daily, which is rarer in wine country than you'd think.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
