Cuisines

  1. The kitchen and dining room share the same open space here, so you watch every plate come together while you eat. It's a relaxed Swedish restaurant in Östermalm where the cooking leans on seasonal produce and lands somewhere between farmhouse and finessed. The four-course nightly menu keeps things affordable without shrinking the ambition. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of neighborhood spot that makes the neighbors insufferably smug.

  2. The bistro inside Stockholm's Grand Hôtel where Mathias Dahlgren runs an informal, modern dining room designed by Ilse Crawford. The menu reads like a love letter to Swedish seasons, moving through medium-sized dishes built on whatever just arrived, langoustines, squid, dry-aged beef. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tracks: this is serious cooking in a room where you don't have to whisper.

  3. Eight treehouses, each designed by a different Swedish architecture firm, perched in the pines just south of the Arctic Circle. The Mirrorcube disappears into the forest; the UFO looks like a prop from a 1970s Scandinavian sci-fi film. A restaurant serves locally inspired food, and there's a sauna and riverside hot tub, but services are otherwise kept intentionally spare. The point, clearly, is the trees.

  4. Peter Bohlin, the architect behind a string of Apple stores, turns out to have a convincing rustic side. This five-star ski resort in Åre sits at the base of Mount Åreskutan, all soaring timber forms, rough-hewn stone, and classic furs where you might have expected glass and steel. Heated bathroom floors, kitchenettes, a spa, and a dedicated gondola for guests round out the picture. There's fine dining, a lounge bar, and a slopeside outpost for when you can't be bothered to ski all the way back.

  5. Rooms built from ice cut out of the Torne River, sleeping around four degrees below zero, and yet somehow the place is always booked. This Lapland hotel runs year-round: winter brings seasonal ice rooms and artist-carved Art Suites, while the solar-powered Icehotel 365 keeps permanent ice suites cold through summer. Warm chalets are available for guests who prefer a bed that won't slowly melt, along with three restaurants drawing on the traditional flavors of Jukkasjärvi.

  6. A boutique eco-hotel two hundred meters from the Baltic on the island of Öland, StrandNara keeps things crisp and Scandinavian without going cold. The rooms run toward a disciplined palette, and breakfast comes with the stay. Dinner is a three-course modern Nordic affair worth staying in for. Beijershamn nature reserve is a short drive when you do venture out, and the beach is essentially at the door.

  7. A Newport, Rhode Island fantasy transplanted to a Swedish island suburb, Hotel J sits on the water at Nacka Strand with maritime paneling, nautical colors, and the kind of breezy Americana that shouldn't work this far north and somehow does. The boat from Slussen gets you here in fifteen minutes, which is arguably the correct way to arrive at a seaside boutique hotel. The restaurant draws day-trippers as readily as guests, and the seasonal brunch has its devotees.

  8. The name is set into a black iron gate so discreetly you could walk right past it. Once through, a courtyard garden leads to a trio of Arts & Crafts townhouses converted into a boutique hotel, where the restaurant runs across two rooms: one all sheepskins and candlelight, the other a country-house kitchen, open and unhurried. The cooking is seasonal and considered, the kind of dinner that makes a Stockholm Tuesday feel like a genuine occasion.

  10. Rank 645. Persona

    French

A server singing a drinking song while you eat your chawanmushi sets the tone at this 25-seat modern restaurant in Östermalm, named after the Bergman film. French technique meets Swedish pantry in a format where you can build your own menu or let the kitchen decide, with a sommelier co-running the room. It's intimate enough that you'll notice everyone else's order, which you will want to.

  11. Exposed wires and concrete pillars share the room with white tablecloths at this all-day restaurant in Stockholm's meat-packing district, where the team behind Adam / Albin have leaned hard into the industrial-chic look. The menu roams freely, with wood-fired pizzas and tacos sitting alongside more polished modern dishes. On a cold Stockholm day, the fire-lit chimney is the only seat that matters.

  12. A 19th-century castle built for a confectioner, now a hotel with two speeds: the historic main house, all period architecture and strait views, and the Sugar Club annex, where poolside suites, DJ sets, and martinis under parasols attract guests who packed lighter. Tennis courts, a spa, and oyster hours on striped sunbeds fill the gaps between. The Öresund Strait sits outside the window, doing its quiet, photogenic thing regardless of which wing you're in.

  13. A 17th-century lakeside manor half an hour from Stockholm, Görvälns Slott is a luxury boutique hotel that commits fully to ornamentation without tipping into fussiness. Heated bathroom tiles, Mille Notti beds, and bath products from Swedish Lapland fill rooms done in soft, calming palettes. The restaurant runs an organic, zero-waste kitchen leaning on foraged and local Swedish ingredients. One rule: guests must be 16 or older, which tells you exactly what they're going for.

  14. Red leather banquettes, panelled walls, and a wood-fired grill open to the room set the tone at this upscale Stockholm steakhouse. Nordic beef gets top billing alongside Japanese Wagyu and American imports, most of it dry-aged and kissed by flame with the sort of restraint you'd expect from a culture that considers minimalism a moral position. It landed at number 69 on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, which is a fine thing to be.

  16. One chef, one counter, one seating, everyone served together. Essence is a small tasting-menu restaurant built around Stefan Taylor working solo in front of his guests, walking through each dish as he plates it. The pauses between courses, while he catches up with himself, are where the room gets talkative. He dries, pickles, and prepares much of it days in advance, which you'd never guess until he explains it.

  18. Rank 661. Koizen

    Japanese

A 22-seat omakase counter a short walk from Slottsskogen park, where you watch the chef build each course in front of you and get a quiet explanation of what you're eating before you eat it. The progression moves through sashimi, nigiri, aburi nigiri, soup, and dessert, while someone else steers you through the sake list. Small, unhurried, and very much a reservation-first situation.

  19. Eight tables is all this cosy Italian restaurant on Skånegatan has ever needed. The family is Neapolitan, and the cooking follows, running toward the rich, southern end of the Italian repertoire with seasonal dishes that change as the markets do. A childhood friend runs the floor while the chef runs the kitchen, which gives the whole room a feeling of a dinner party where you happened to buy a ticket.

  20. A white building with green balconies in a seaside resort better known for tennis, Pensionat Furuhem is a traditional Swedish restaurant where wood-furnished rooms set a tone that the unfussy cooking matches exactly. The spettekaka is the thing to know about: a local Scanian pastry slowly grilled all day over beech embers, then cut tableside and finished with changing accompaniments, which is a showier finish than the room would ever suggest.

  21. A glass-enclosed corner terrace on one of Malmo's main roads signals what's inside: a smart but unfussy Swedish restaurant where natural light does most of the decorating. You can sit at a long counter, perch on high stools by floor-to-ceiling windows, or settle into a proper dining room. The cooking is generous and unshowy, and the room shifts gears toward something livelier once the homemade cocktails get involved.

  22. A converted East India Company warehouse on the Gothenburg waterfront, Sjömagasinet is a wooden, chalet-style seafood brasserie where the harbour view does a lot of the heavy lifting. The menu runs from lobster bisque and langoustine on toast through steamed cod and seafood platters sized for however hungry you're feeling. Lunch is lighter; evenings lean into the signatures. Grab the terrace or a first-floor window seat before someone else does.

  23. Rank 661. Washoku TOMO

    Japanese

Fresh wasabi from Japan alongside Argentinian prawns and Canadian black cod makes a quietly globe-trotting argument for omakase in Södermalm. This intimate Japanese counter keeps the format approachable in price without shrinking the ambition, and the chef-owner runs both the kitchen and the room herself, which gives the whole evening a particular warmth. Seafood anchors the menu, though it doesn't stop at sushi.

  24. Each of the 35 rooms at this boutique hotel on a quiet, tree-lined corner near Lake Vättern is decorated around a different theme, from the Mirror Room to the Ralph Lauren Room to one that simply has a sauna in it. There's a shared outdoor jacuzzi, a spa next door for treatments, and a restaurant downstairs running breakfast through dinner. A calm, slightly eccentric base for exploring the southern end of Sweden's largest lake.

  25. Rank 671. 450 Gradi

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A wood-fired Neapolitan pizzeria on the island of Lidingö, sitting in the old AGA industrial area with water views that do most of the decorating. The dough is the project: light, high-crusted, and built for digestion, cooked at the 450 degrees the name promises. Some pies lean Naples, others lean Nordic, and the version with Kalix vendace roe and dill is the kind of menu decision that shouldn't work and does. Artisanal gelato and a full Italian menu round it out.

  26. Blå Porten is a cafeteria-style cafe on Djurgården where you grab a tray, pick a salad or entrée, and work your way down a lineup of cakes and cardamom buns. It sits on a sprawling property with a long dining room and a garden, a short walk from the Vasa Museum, so the crowd is part tourist, part fika devotee. Eat outside by the fountain, since the indoor seating has the energy of a very nice school lunch.

  27. Günters is a sausage stand on Karlbergsvägen, the kind of place where lunch costs less than the coffee you'd have after it. There are more than ten sausages on offer, from merguez to currywurst, and the man behind the grill will ask whether you want spicy, mustard, and sauerkraut, so you'll want to have answers ready. There's a small counter and a patch of sidewalk, both patrolled by pigeons with excellent manners and zero shame.

  28. This is a casual Södermalm meatball joint where the menu runs from veal and pork to reindeer, boar, and, if you're feeling brave, bear. Everything arrives with mashed potatoes, cucumber salad, and lingonberries, and a plate usually lands around $30. The space leans hard into ball puns and merch, which sounds like a warning but somehow stays on the right side of cheesy. Yes, it's a step up from the IKEA version.

  29. This is a pastry-case cafe in Norrmalm where fika is treated as a daily obligation, with cardamom buns on the larger, sweeter, less spiced side. It's smaller than the other branches in this little Stockholm chain, but it suits a coffee before the shops on Gamla Brogatan. The princess cake arrives in full green-marzipan regalia, stacked high with raspberries and cream, and nobody makes eye contact while eating it.

  30. Rank 676. Bistro Leoparden

    Modern Pizzeria

The airy, well-laced crust is the tell at this modern Stockholm pizza bistro, where the dough gets enough time and attention that it actually feels light rather than like a dare. The room is contemporary and comfortable, the kind of place where a relaxed evening doesn't require a dress code or a prior commitment to silence. Service is informal and switched-on, handled by a young staff that keeps the energy up without making it feel like a theme. Named among 50 Top Pizza Europe's Excellent Pizzerias.

  31. A spare, high-energy bistro in Stockholm where the menu quietly refuses to pick a lane. Chef Isak Oldenburg came up running restaurants in Nice, so quiche lorraine and bouillabaisse are at home here, but so are a Reuben sandwich and a solid dhal. The kitchen buys whole animals, which means offal shows up without apology. The mix sounds chaotic and somehow doesn't read that way on the plate.

  32. Rank 677. Bar Europa

    Pizzeria

The owners opened this bar and restaurant on Södermalm with the stated goal of making it the worst possible place to bring a date, which in practice means high tables, bench seating along the walls, and a room designed to pull strangers into conversation. The kitchen is barely big enough for two chefs and an electric pizza oven, but turbot and sweetbreads come out of it anyway. Desserts nod to Swedish café nostalgia from the '90s, which lands better than it sounds.

  33. A working bakery in an industrial pocket south of the city that mostly supplies bread to restaurants, with a small cafe attached where the public gets to benefit from that arrangement. Lunch runs to fresh-baked bread, cookies, smörgåstårta, and a short list of sandwiches that moves between Swedish tradition and a muffuletta or a cantal with gribiche. The kind of spot where the product is serious because it was never really meant for you.

  35. A biodynamic urban farm on the edge of Djurgården where you can pick your own flowers, visit the stone-oven bakery, and end up lingering over lunch in a greenhouse cafe that somehow makes a Tuesday feel earned. In summer the outdoor Herbarium bar opens with a short menu built almost entirely from what's growing nearby. The 20-minute walk along the quay from central Stockholm is part of the point.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
