The 98 Best Places to Eat and Stay in Detroit

Sections

Tap to add or drop a section. At least one stays on.

The best places to eat and stay in Detroit, according to the experts: USA Today, James Beard Awards, and Eater have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Selden Standard comes out on top.

More Less

Mabel Gray and Baobab Fare hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with James Beard Awards close behind.

Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. The menu credits local farmers by name, which tells you what kind of small-plates restaurant this is before the food even arrives. Reclaimed wood, subway tile, and a patio backed by a bold flower mural set the room; the kitchen turns whatever's in season into inventive rustic-American plates that change often enough to reward repeat visits. The chef was a James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Great Lakes in 2023.

  2. The handwritten menu changes so often it might be different by the time you finish reading it, which is either thrilling or exhausting depending on your disposition. This cozy New American restaurant in Hazel Park, helmed by chef James Rigato, runs on mismatched vintage plates, eclectic decor, a gothic wine cave, and produce largely grown by Rigato's partner. Named to USA Today's Restaurants of the Year list in 2025.

  3. The signature juice, Ji, sits bottled in the retail section alongside coffee beans and condiments from a sister market, which tells you this is a place with a community idea behind it. Baobab Fare is a Burundian restaurant on Woodward, one of very few in the country, serving slow-roasted goat, pan-fried chicken in mustard-onion sauce, and a coconut-mango dessert that has no business being this good. A James Beard Nominee for Outstanding Restaurateur.

  4. Rank 4. Vecino

    Modern Mexican

The masa section of the menu says a lot about a modern Mexican restaurant: handmade enchiladas, tostadas, tetelas, each one built with the care of someone who grew up arguing about corn. Vecino sits in Midtown with a warm, spare interior and a menu that pulls from Mexico City and Oaxaca without apology. Esquire named it one of America's best new restaurants in 2024, and it landed a James Beard semifinalist nod the following year.

  5. A converted firehouse turned wine bar with a retail shop stocking over 200 bottles you can also drink on the spot. The menu rotates around whatever the chef's neighbor harvests from the garden across the street, which keeps things genuinely seasonal in a way most places only claim. The backyard runs to lawn chairs and picnic blankets, with DJs on weekends. It landed on the New York Times Restaurant List and Bon Appétit's Best New Restaurants in the same year.

  6. Warda Bouguettaya won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Pastry Chef in 2022, and her understated cafe on West Alexandrine is where that makes sense. Warda Pâtisserie is the kind of patisserie where the tarts are architectural and the bread smells like someone actually cares. Bistro seating if you want to linger over a latte, takeaway boxes if you don't. Detroit didn't exactly have a shortage of opinions, but this one is quiet and confident about it.

  7. Freya is a tasting-menu restaurant where the courses change daily and a pierogi gets dressed like a Coney dog. It's fine dining, but the room is loose enough that you can flip through a binder of the owner's vinyl and request a song, which is not a sentence you hear at most places with a James Beard Semifinalist nod. The wine list leans toward small, sustainable producers, and the Dragonfly bar next door handles cocktails.

  8. Rank 9. Ima Izakaya

    Japanese

The robata grill runs hot at this casual Japanese izakaya in Midtown, turning out skewers and karaage alongside udon in deep, earthy broths. The cocktail list is robust enough to justify lingering, and the raw fish plates give the kitchen a chance to show some range. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist in 2023, which tracks with a menu that does comfort and precision in the same breath without making a fuss about it.

  9. A butcher counter at the front sets the tone: this West Village chophouse takes whole-animal cooking seriously, sending globally-inflected dishes through a five-course tasting menu or a looser à la carte spread. The baklava doughnut, crispy and honey-soaked, has a way of sticking in the memory. The chef was a James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Great Lakes. Sandwiches at the bar keep lunch from feeling like a commitment.

  10. Rank 9. Rose's

    Eastern European

A diner on Detroit's East Side that now runs Polish nights, the menu built around pierogi, kluski, and kielbasa alongside a long-loved burger on thick sourdough. The room feels like Grandma's sunroom, green walls and pink curtains intact, except for the wax-drowned candlesticks and bouquets cut from the parking lot garden. The New York Times named it to their 2026 Restaurant List, which tracks.

  11. The birria ramen, built on a dark consomé and a family recipe from the owner's father, tells you everything about this taco spot in Southwest Detroit's Mexicantown. It's a casual, counter-style Mexican restaurant where housemade salsa macha sits on every table the way chile crisp would at a Sichuan place, and the lard-fried chicken Milanese comes with spaghetti verde. The New York Times put it on their 2026 Restaurant List, which tracks.

  12. The dining room is dressed as a Seoul street corner, bus station facades and all, which either tells you everything or nothing until you're sitting inside it with a plate of chicken buldak in front of you. Noori Pocha is a Korean pojangmacha-style restaurant, the kind built around the late-night, post-work food cart tradition, with a menu to match. The New York Times put it on their 2024 Restaurant List, and the K-pop soundtrack makes that feel completely reasonable.

  13. This is a Coney Island diner in Southwest Detroit, which means a grilled dog in natural casing, chili sauce, onions, and a stripe of yellow mustard, all handed over a counter lined with swivel stools. It's tiny, long, narrow, and has been feeding night-shift workers and the hungover for ages. Breakfast is the sleeper order, and asking for the hash browns well-done is the only advice you'll need. Cheap, quick, and cash-register simple.

  14. The spacious bar is built to look like a cantina from the highlands of Jalisco, which tells you a lot about the ambition here. This sit-down taqueria in Southwest Detroit is the brick-and-mortar flagship from a family that has run taco trucks through the neighborhood for close to two decades. Carnitas, tacos al pastor, pork ribs in salsa verde, and a full run of margaritas and palomas round out a menu that earns its place alongside the trucks.

  15. A restored church that now serves bagels, flatbreads, wine, and boozy coffee drinks instead of sermons, The Congregation is the kind of all-day cafe and community hub where dropping in for an hour routinely becomes three. The outdoor deck and yard fill up on warm Thursday evenings when there's dancing. Food trucks, a farmers market, and yoga classes round out the calendar for a place that takes the "third place" idea more literally than most.

  17. Shinola, the brand that sells you a handsome watch and a bicycle you'll never ride, also runs this downtown Detroit hotel, and it lands with the Michelin Guide's one Key designation. The rooms carry the same crafted-in-America aesthetic the brand trades on, and the address on Woodward puts you squarely in a neighborhood that has visibly decided it isn't done yet. A stay here feels less like a hotel booking and more like a small wager on the city.

  18. Rank 21. BARDA

    Live-Fire Steakhouse

  19. The pink storefront on the Avenue of Fashion signals the tone before you're even inside. This bakery and cafe is the kind of place that does cinnamon rolls, banana pudding cupcakes, and celebration cakes alongside a solid vegan lineup, with a family caramel recipe that's been around forever anchoring the whole operation. Chef April Anderson was a James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Bakery. Baking classes run separately at Eastern Market for those who want to take notes.

  23. A taqueria in a former hot dog stand, which tracks once you taste the Sonoran dogs still on the menu, now loaded with bacon, green chiles, and roasted chile sauce alongside the braised meats that are the real draw. Chef Amado Lopez, a James Beard Emerging Chef semifinalist, runs a compact, casual spot where the focus shifts between slow-cooked pork and solid vegan options. Order online, eat inside, then cross the street to Bombshell Treat Bar for dessert.

  25. A lobby full of playful, colorful sculpture and paintings keeps the black marble and dark wood from taking themselves too seriously at this luxury boutique hotel in Birmingham, the upscale suburb just outside Detroit. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Key. It's the kind of boldly designed, art-forward property that once belonged only to bigger cities, now quietly doing its thing in a leafy Michigan suburb.

  27. The terra cotta atrium under a massive skylight is the first thing that stops you in this downtown Detroit hotel, which has been around forever and knows it. Rooms run to tall windows and high ceilings, the bones of a grand old skyscraper kept largely intact through a careful restoration. It sits right where downtown meets Midtown, so the theaters, stadiums, and galleries are all on foot.

    The awards

  28. Apartments with a washer/dryer and live plants in every unit, inside the landmarked Book Tower. ROOST is an extended-stay boutique hotel where the studios and one- or two-bedroom suites run closer to a furnished apartment than a standard room, with full kitchens and a bikes-to-borrow program. Dogs are welcome, and when cooking feels like too much, the building's own restaurant options are right downstairs.

  29. The awards

  30. The bones here are Albert Kahn's old Art Deco Walker-Roehrig Building, once home to WWJ radio, now a boutique hotel where the heritage stops at the lobby threshold and the rooms go full contemporary. Suites run generous by city-center standards, and the building's second act includes Cibo Detroit for dinner, the Beve cocktail bar for something swanky, and a rooftop terrace when the weather cooperates.

  32. A converted Holiday Inn in Corktown where the exposed conduit and polished concrete aren't a design oversight but the whole point. The 144 rooms pair that industrial shell with custom furnishings from local artisans, keeping things clean-lined without feeling spare. Batch Brewing pours at the bar, Detroit Bikes handles the rentals, and the courtyard runs a beer garden and live music when the weather cooperates. A hotel that leans hard into Detroit's comeback narrative, and Corktown is a fine neighborhood to make that argument from.

  33. Rank 36. Oak & Reel

    Coastal Italian Seafood

Coastal Italian seafood in Milwaukee Junction, with exposed ceilings, soft lighting, and a ground-level view of Grand Boulevard setting the mood. The chef honed his craft at a two-Michelin-starred New York kitchen before coming home to the Great Lakes, and the menu shows it: raw oysters, salt-baked branzino, ink-dark lumache with crab and shrimp. Downstairs, a cozy bar called the Upright handles cocktails and small plates for those not committed to a full sit-down.

  34. Original marble fireplaces, Ford family archives, and a signed note from Walt Disney in the lobby set the tone at this historic hotel on the edge of Dearborn. Rooms are stately and well-kept, and the bar named for Ford's road-trip companions, Edison and Firestone among them, is a genuinely good excuse to stay for one more drink. It's the kind of hotel that takes its own story seriously, which turns out to be more interesting than most.

    The awards

  35. Rank 37. Palazzo Di Pizza

    Detroit Style American Pizzeria

Detroit-style pizza comes out of the oven as a thick, airy square with a crispy, caramelized undercarriage, and Palazzo di Pizza has quietly become one of the better places in the country to eat one. It ranked tenth on 50 Top Pizza's national slice list, which for a suburban Royal Oak shop is a notable thing. The pepperoni option, layered under the cheese and sauce in true Detroit fashion, is the move.

  36. A luxury hotel in Birmingham, Michigan that feels like it has been around forever, even though it hasn't. The Townsend pulls off a particular trick: the kind of hushed, buttoned-up grandeur that usually takes generations to accumulate. It's the sort of place where the staff remembers your name and the decor has never once considered being trendy. A solid base for exploring Detroit's suburbs without roughing it.

    The awards

  37. A café in the old Astro space that kept the soufflé egg sandwich on brioche on the menu, because the neighborhood would have revolted. Coffee comes from Anthology in Eastern Market and Grand Coffee Roasters in San Francisco, and the café de olla, made with piloncillo and canela, is the kind of order that makes you feel slightly smug about your choices. Handmade journals from a local printmaker line the shelves for those who pretend they'll journal more.

  39. Rank 44. Grandma Bob’s Handmade Pizza

    Detroit style Pizzeria

Detroit-style pizza done with a designer's eye: the room was put together by serious industry names, and the color palette announces that before you've ordered. This is a pizza shop with round pies, pan pies, and slices piled high with the kind of stretchy, abundant cheese that makes a mess of your shirt. The menu runs to salads and cocktails and ice cream too, and the whole mood lands somewhere between a proper night out and a very good Tuesday.

  40. Rank 44. Leña

    Catalan

Every log in the hearth is Michigan oak, cherry, or applewood, and the smoke threads through a Basque and Catalan menu that sprawls from pintxos to proper entrees. This is a sit-down dinner spot in Brush Park where sharing is assumed and the wine list leans Spanish throughout. A specialty gin and tonic section and a sherry-forward low-alcohol program round out what is, by any measure, a well-considered room to spend money in on a Friday night.

  41. Rank 44. Puma Detroit

    Latin American

All-black walls with iridescent orange accents set the mood at this Latin American cocktail bar and small-plates spot on the northwest side. Argentine and Chilean wines arrive in penguin-shaped ceramic pitchers, and the cocktail list leans on pisco and yerba mate. DJs spin from a booth in the center of the room, a fire pit runs along one wall, and the whole thing gets progressively better after midnight. Book ahead if you want a seat at the bar.

  42. Rank 47. Al Ameer

    Lebanese

This is a big, family-friendly Lebanese restaurant in Dearborn, and it's apparently where half of Detroit sends you the moment you land at the airport. The pita comes out of an oven shipped over from Lebanon, which is more dedication than most of us give our commutes. Come for the hummus, the shawarma wraps with a sharp hit of toum, or a slow-roasted lamb on almond rice built for a table of relatives. Order the Lemon Crush.

  43. Rank 47. Bar Gabi

    Eastern European

Bar Gabi is a Romanian-leaning dinner spot in Hazel Park that's built for passing plates and losing track of time. The menu strays happily into Italy and beyond, so a schnitzel the size of a catcher's mitt shares the table with goulash, gnocchetti, and focaccia with whipped feta. The big corner booth fits about six friends, which is roughly the headcount this whole operation assumes you'll arrive with.

  46. Rank 47. Chenin

Chenin is a tiny wine bar tucked inside The Siren Hotel, pouring natural and biodynamic bottles to a room lit softly enough to forgive anyone's skin-contact experiments. Salty snacks and a mortadella sandwich piled onto focaccia keep the evening going longer than planned. Seats are scarce, so arrive when the doors open. It was a James Beard Award nominee for Best New Bar.

  48. Rank 47. Dearborn Meat Market

    Lebanese Butcher

Halal butcher shop by day, charcoal grill operation by the afternoon, Dearborn Meat Market has been doing both long enough that the regulars don't bother with the menu. The move is a tray of kabobs or kafta, roasted over charcoal in the back, with hummus and pita alongside. It's a narrow, welcoming room in the heart of Dearborn's Lebanese corridor, and few places in the area do lamb this well.

  49. Rank 47. Detroit 75

    Sandwich Shop

Detroit 75 started as a food truck in a gas station parking lot, which is a fairly honest way to begin a sandwich career. The suburban Madison Heights spot is a counter-service lunch place where the Detroit-style cheesesteak arrives overflowing its sesame roll. The shrimp po'boy and the garlic cilantro fries with roasted jalapeño ketchup are also in rotation. You order at the counter, then take a seat in the airy dining room.

  50. A jewel-box bakery in Oak Park where butter croissants, Earl Grey tea cakes, and herby scones sell out before noon most days. The pantry shelves hold Guernsey dairy, local flower bouquets, and cookbooks, so it functions as a neighborhood general store for people who care deeply about breakfast. Saturdays draw a line down the block, which tells you what you need to know about the regulars' commitment levels. Go early, follow their social, and do not arrive expecting golubki if it's past noon.

  52. Little Liberia is a Liberian sit-down restaurant on Detroit's east side, where the grill does most of the talking and the table fills up faster than anyone planned. Expect smoky shrimp, collards with bits of beef, a whole fried snapper, and cocktails that lean on tamarind and ginger. The room is quiet and gallery-like, with real art on the walls, so it suits a date for people who'd rather talk than watch a steak arrive.

  53. Loui's is a Hazel Park pizza parlor with wood paneling, a dining room that hasn't been redecorated since sometime before most of its customers were born, and a ceiling hung with chianti bottles signed by diners, like a very boozy guest book. The Detroit-style squares come out thick and airy under a crown of caramelized cheese. Order a pitcher, settle into the dim, and don't plan on being productive afterward.

  54. The gumbo here has been a Detroit obsession for decades, a shrimp-and-sausage situation thickened with okra and a proprietary spice blend nobody's giving up the recipe for. This is a carryout counter spot, casual and no-frills, with jambalaya, red beans and rice, and shrimp po'boys on crackly baguettes rounding out a menu that stays squarely in the Louisiana lane. Order at the counter, take it home, and resist eating it in the car.

  55. Marrow is a sit-down restaurant and deli in a former poultry processing plant in Eastern Market, which means the building has gone from plucking chickens to serving whole-animal butchery with a cocktail list. Two moody bars fill with shoppers still holding their grocery haul and locals who dress up a little for a Tuesday. Brunch is where the whipped bone marrow gets spread on pancakes, because restraint was never the point.

  56. Rank 47. Medusa

    Sicilian

Medusa is a sit-down Italian restaurant that skips the red-sauce script and cooks Sicilian instead, so the baked ziti and the yelling about gabagool stay home. Expect chickpea fritters, a sardine pasta that stands its ground, and a dessert cart that gets wheeled to your table like a small, painted parade float. When the weather cooperates, the patio does a respectable impression of a Mediterranean vacation. It's a place for a proper night out.

  57. Half Japanese grocery, half sushi bar, Noble Fish has been a Detroit-area institution for long enough that regulars have probably watched the dining room expand around them. The sushi counter is the draw: chefs assembling nigiri and sashimi with the kind of focus that makes you stop talking mid-sentence. Rolls run large, prices run reasonable, and the shelves of Japanese snacks and bottled teas make it hard to leave empty-handed.

  58. Norm's is a proper diner, the kind where the patty melt arrives with two smashed patties and a stack of Texas toast, and nobody mentions your cholesterol. The menu runs from blueberry pancakes to club sandwiches built with structural ambition, plus a caesar that somehow wanders in with a crisp chicken cutlet. It suits a solo breakfast with a newspaper, a brunch with friends, or the slow recovery from a late night.

  59. Rank 47. Polish Village Cafe

    Eastern European

You walk down a staircase into a basement that has been Polish since before your parents were born, all dark wood, stained glass, and checkered tablecloths. This is a Hamtramck cafe for stuffed cabbage, potato pancakes, and pierogi, served in portions that assume you've been shoveling snow. The bar does a fine Zywiec and a better view of the room, and the Infatuation lists it among Detroit's best restaurants.

  60. Scotty Simpson's is a nautical-themed corner fish fry in Brightmoor that has apparently never been told the decor trend moved on, and that's fine by everyone in the booths. You order the cod in its light house batter with fries, slaw, tartar sauce, and soft dinner rolls, and the fish flakes apart in big, tidy pieces. The fried frog legs are thick enough to need a second opinion, and the pie goes fast, so ask early.

  61. Rank 47. Shangri-La

    Cantonese

A Cantonese restaurant in the Cass Corridor doing all-day dim sum, which is reason enough to know where it is. Steamed pork buns, rice rolls, chive-and-garlic pancakes, Singapore rice vermicelli, and a hot and sour soup that earns its place on the menu. The room is small and unpretentious, with two- and four-tops filling fast, and the window seats offer a floor show the neighborhood reliably provides. Takeout moves quickly, too.

  62. A bakery in Old Redford built entirely around one vegetable, which sounds like a stunt until you see the display case: sweet potato pie, cheesecake, cookies, ice cream, Belgian waffles, grits, cornbread, and on. The whole project is a quiet tribute to George Washington Carver and his cataloguing of the sweet potato's uses. Order ahead online if you'd rather browse than queue, and don't skip the black-eyed pea and collard green soup.

  63. Tall Trees is a tiny Ferndale counter spot for breakfast and lunch, where the sandwiches arrive on focaccia or sesame-crusted semolina batards and stand tall enough to need a plan of attack. It's a forest-green, wood-toned room, so even grabbing takeout feels faintly like a spa visit. Show up at peak lunch and you'll wait with everyone else who saw the photos. It's on The Infatuation's list of Detroit's best restaurants.

  64. Tamales have been leaving this carryout window on Vernor since the 1950s, most urgently around Christmas when the line gets serious. The menu sticks to classic pork and chicken, with rotating specials like cheese-jalapeño, and the tamales run on the slender side, which keeps the masa-to-filling ratio honest. Call ahead and your bag is waiting by the time you arrive, which is either efficient or slightly magical depending on your day.

  69. Rank 74. Prime + Proper

    Modern American Steakhouse

Glass, marble, and open-flame grills fill a room that makes clear this is a steakhouse with architectural ambitions. Downtown Detroit's Prime + Proper dry-ages its USDA Prime and Japanese Miyazaki cuts in-house before the fire gets anywhere near them, which is either discipline or showmanship, and possibly both. The wine list swings between Napa and the Old World. It ranked 65th on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, for what that's worth on a Tuesday night in Michigan.

  78. Rank 96. Leila

    Middle Eastern Dessert

A Lebanese restaurant on Capitol Park named for the family matriarch, Leila leans into home-cooking warmth rather than white-tablecloth formality. The New York Times called out the Lebanese Sundae among the best dishes eaten across the country in 2024: rose ice cream with orange blossom water hidden under a cloud of fairy floss, the whole thing buried in pistachios, arriving at the table looking like it has somewhere to be.

  79. The ham sandwich here landed on the New York Times list of the 26 best dishes eaten across the U.S. in 2024, which is a lot of glory for a poppy-seed roll packed with thick-cut ham, a slice of cheese, yellow mustard, and pickles. This old-school counter spot on Michigan Avenue has been doing exactly this for decades, and the new owners kept the recipe intact. Some things shouldn't be a project.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
