  2. Rank 355. Phở 79

    Vietnamese Noodle Shop

The clipboard by the front door tells you everything: this pho shop in Garden Grove has been an old-school institution long enough that the wait is just part of the ritual. The spartan room has a bright yellow wall covered in accolades, including a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and nobody glances up from their bowl long enough to admire them. The oxtail broth is what regulars order without looking at the menu.

  3. Rank 355. Pizzana

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The wood-burning oven came over from Italy, and you can watch it work through the glass-walled kitchen while you wait. This Brentwood pizzeria does Neapolitan pies with a crust that stays light and crisp through the center, topped with San Marzano tomatoes and fior di latte flown in weekly. Mediterranean-blue murals complete the homeland fantasy. The Michelin Guide awards it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks: the room is always full and nobody looks like they're eating here ironically.

  4. Wood smoke from the rotisserie drifts a block down Western before you even see the place, which is as good an advertisement as any. This Koreatown Peruvian spot has been an old-school institution for decades, turning out whole chickens over live fire with a crispy, marinated skin that keeps the family recipe firmly in-house. The twice-fried fries and the spicy green aji sauce are not optional. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the wait will remind you why.

  5. Rank 355. Ramen & Tsukemen TAO

    Japanese Noodle Shop

Tucked into an easy-to-miss strip mall in Buena Park, this compact ramen shop seats maybe twenty people in a room that skips every non-essential, including ambiance. The menu is short and ramen is the clear center of gravity, from a rich, creamy spicy red miso to a lighter chicken broth that holds its own. The Michelin Bib Gourmand makes sense the moment the bowl arrives. Pork buns float in quietly and do their job.

  9. Sichuan cooking in a bright, window-lined room in Alhambra, where the mapo tofu and tea-smoked duck have followed loyalists from the old address a couple miles away. The kitchen runs on scarlet numbing oils and chopped chilis, and a bowl of fish in rattan pepper broth will leave your lips buzzing in the best possible, er, notable way. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and a private room handles large parties well.

  13. A third-floor omakase counter tucked into Weller Court in Little Tokyo, where the sardine roll, wrapped in pickled daikon with ginger and shiso, gives you a sense of how the chef thinks. Two seatings run nightly, one personally helmed by the chef himself. Lunch omakase lands considerably easier on the wallet if dinner feels steep. The Michelin Guide has taken notice, and the regulars already act like they found it first.

  14. Rank 355. The Factory Kitchen

    Northern Italian

Cement columns, garage doors rolled open to the street, and a modern bar give this Arts District restaurant a loft-like feel that has nothing to do with the food, which is decidedly old-country Northern Italian. The kitchen makes its pasta in-house and treats regional specificity as a point of pride, not a talking point. The Michelin Guide has flagged it with a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this focused.

  16. Rank 355. Union

    Italian

Edison bulbs cast a warm amber glow over exposed brick in this Old Pasadena Italian restaurant, where all the pasta is made in house and the portions lean toward sharing whether you planned to or not. The spaghetti and meatballs arrives on a platter the size of a hubcap. The cooking is bold rather than fussy, the sourcing is local, and the Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand to prove it isn't a secret anymore.

  21. The hourglass pool is the giveaway: this mid-century boutique hotel on the edge of Beverly Hills was built for people who know their Eames from their Noguchi and want the furniture to prove it. The blocky blue facade and curvaceous pool invite Marilyn Monroe comparisons, though the hotel probably doesn't encourage them. Quieter than you'd expect this close to everything, and the rates tend to be gentler than the zip code implies.

  23. A center hearth anchors this Altadena neighborhood restaurant, and the live-fire cooking radiates outward from there. The team lost nearly everything in the Eaton Fire and kept going anyway, which gives the room a particular kind of warmth that has nothing to do with the flames. Seasonal, irreverent, and Esquire-named among the best new restaurants in America, Betsy pulls off the trick of feeling like a community dinner table without being precious about it.

  25. A boutique hotel that looks like someone airlifted a Parisian luxury property into Beverly Hills and let the California sun bleach it into something crisper and more cinematic. The bones are from the old Tower Beverly Hills, but the interior is fully reimagined: black-and-white palette, clean lines, and just enough Hollywood glamour to feel intentional rather than themed. The kind of hotel that makes chilly minimalism seem like a missed opportunity.

  28. The old bikini bar sign still hangs above the Santa Monica Boulevard entrance, which tells you most of what you need to know about Gold Diggers as a hotel. It occupies a building that once housed a bikini bar downstairs, a residential hotel above it, and a rehearsal space out back where L.A. rock royalty is rumored to have practiced. The vibe is exactly what that history implies: a rock-and-roll hotel that didn't have to try very hard to become one.

  30. A coffin-shaped pool in the courtyard sets the tone before you've even checked in. This Spanish Colonial hotel in downtown Los Angeles went through a Moroccan-themed detour before a full renovation returned it to its 1920s bones, and the rooms now pair that era's warm geometry with local art, most of it by women, down to a lobby mural. The Broad, MOCA, and Hauser & Wirth are all walkable, which is a sentence you cannot say from Santa Monica.

  35. A boutique hotel on Melrose where the lobby is meant to be lived in, not passed through. The anchor is The Hart and the Hunter, a Southern-leaning restaurant whose biscuits have reportedly stopped people mid-sidewalk. Rooms are compact and the point, as far as Paligroup is concerned, is the communal life downstairs. For a stretch of Melrose better known for vintage shops than overnight stays, it reads as a reasonable argument for the neighborhood.

  36. The menu lists the farmers by name before it lists the dishes, which tells you everything about this Santa Monica neighborhood restaurant. The room has been around forever, and the lighting and leather booths have earned their intimacy. Market-driven New American means the cocktails change with the seasons too, a detail the bar takes seriously. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the Los Angeles Times put it on their 101 best restaurants list.

  39. Mansard roofs across from a Los Angeles shopping mall is a combination that shouldn't work, yet here we are. This full-service hotel on Beverly Boulevard layers Art Deco-inspired interiors and French balconies over unmistakable SoCal surroundings, hitting a note somewhere between Parisian fashion and Beverly Hills glamour. The public spaces are moody enough that you'll arrive in your nicest outfit and still feel like you've underdressed.

  41. A 1939 residential building a block from the Peninsula, converted into a boutique hotel by Palisociety, who have made a small empire out of this exact move. No monumental lobby, no sprawling pool deck, just the kind of quirkily stylish rooms that make you feel like you live in Beverly Hills rather than visiting it. The Peninsula crowd is paying more and getting a longer check-in line.

  46. The red-orange cushions and pale green backsplash look like someone decorated with the produce order, which makes sense for a neighborhood restaurant that works directly with local farms. Tomat does all-day, but evenings are when the kitchen gets serious about California's seasonal haul. Dishes are meant for the table to share, and the room fills accordingly. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and Esquire put it on its best new restaurants list for 2025.

  47. The old "Riot Hyatt," where generations of rock bands treated balconies as launching pads for room-service televisions, is now a sleek Andaz property on the Sunset Strip. Those infamous balconies got sealed into floor-to-ceiling windows, which at least improves the view. The hotel fits the Strip as it is now, polished and self-aware, rather than what it was when Mötley Crüe had a tab here.

  49. Jordan Kahn's daytime cafe in the architecturally eccentric Hayden Tract looks like a place that takes itself very seriously, and then the food shows up and you realize it has earned the silence. The interior is stripped to near nothing, which focuses you entirely on plates that are genuinely intricate without announcing it. A morning or lunch stop, but not a casual one.

  50. A Hyatt JdV hotel tucked between Sunset and Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood Volume pitches itself somewhere between luxury and minimalism, which is a polished way of saying the rooms are stylish but you won't feel guilty about the rate. The neighborhood is in the middle of becoming something, and the hotel suits that mood: put-together without taking itself too seriously, and easier on the wallet than the boutique competition around the corner.

  51. Record players in every room is a strong opening argument for a hotel on the Sunset Strip, and Hotel Ziggy leans into it from there. Named for Bowie's glam-rock alter ego, this West Hollywood boutique hotel layers classic concert posters and music murals across its rooms without tipping into theme-park territory. The Sixties-inflected interiors feel lived-in rather than costumed, and the address on the Strip does the rest of the storytelling.

  56. A French hotel group that took its sweet time crossing the Atlantic, Mama Shelter landed in Hollywood with in-room iMacs, free wi-fi, and public spaces designed for lingering rather than lobbying. The bar leans game-room, the coffee shop runs all day, and the restaurant mixes French and American without making a fuss about it. Rates stay low enough for the creative-class crowd this place is clearly courting.

  58. Three blocks south of the Sunset Strip, on a genuinely quiet residential street, sits this all-suite hotel that has quietly figured out it doesn't need to compete with the nightclubs nearby. Suites come with fireplaces and fully stocked minibars, some add kitchenettes and balconies, and the rooftop pool looks out over West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. The lounge drifts from co-working space to something more convivial by evening, on its own unhurried schedule.

The coffered wood ceiling and vintage frames make this downtown Pasadena bistro feel like someone airlifted a Parisian side street into Southern California. The chef has no interest in deconstructing the classics, which means Burgundy snails arrive glossy with herbed butter and duck à l'orange stays duck à l'orange. Order the soufflé for dessert; it takes time and it's supposed to. The Michelin Guide has it listed.

  64. Rank 448. Saffy's

    Middle Eastern

The open hearth at this Middle Eastern restaurant in East Hollywood runs hot enough that you feel it from your seat, which is either thrilling or a heads-up to dress accordingly. Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis (of Bestia fame) built the menu around long-skewer kebabs and wood-fired bread, though the grilled lobster in green harissa suggests the kitchen has range. Getting a reservation requires patience, or luck, or both.

  65. Checkered marble floors and Venetian plaster walls set the tone at this 66-room hotel on Fairfax, where California light pours through skylights and the pool courtyard is lined with a living wall landscaped by local nursery Rolling Greens. Suites come stocked with Taschen books and original paintings. The Grove and the Original Farmer's Market are directly across the street, which either delights or horrifies, depending on your relationship with weekend crowds.

  70. Floor-to-ceiling windows face out over Sunset Boulevard from every room in this twelve-story hotel, part of Hilton's Curio Collection. The rooms run large by LA standards, with proper living spaces even in the base category and balconies as you move up. The rooftop pool and its lounge add the sweeping skyline views you'd expect, along with a laidback on-site restaurant. It's a solid perch for anyone who wants the Strip without living in it.

  72. A 48-room boutique hotel in West Adams, a neighborhood better known for its restaurants than its overnight options. Alsace LA leans into an unlikely pairing of Southern California ease and Western European sensibility, with a courtyard, a small pool, and a fitness center that takes itself seriously. A modern Japanese restaurant by Danny Elmaleh is on site, and the surrounding streets give guests plenty of reasons to wander.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
