  5. Woven rattan pendants, curved wooden headboards, and patterned throws replace the usual beachy kitsch at this 70-room clifftop boutique hotel, which reopened recently with a Mallorcan-inflected, warm-minimalist sensibility. The Pacific does the decorating through the windows. Ocean-facing rooms add balconies or pool access, and a guest-only policy keeps things quieter than you'd expect for a place this central to Laguna's gallery-and-restaurant corridor.

    Modern Oaxacan Taqueria

Dark masa quesadillas filled with Oaxacan cheese, in-house tortillas, and tacos served all day set the tone at this modern Oaxacan spot a short walk from the Venice beach scene. The room looks the part, all bright and California-casual, and the mezcal list gives you something to do while you decide between the barbacoa and the tinga de pollo. The Los Angeles Times put it on its Fifty Under $50 list, which tracks.

  64. A boutique hotel sitting right on Redondo Beach's harbor, Shade trades on a location that drew resort-builders here long before the boutique concept existed. Rooms lean coastal-modern without overdoing the nautical clichés, and the South Bay light does most of the decorating. It holds a spot in the Michelin Selected Hotels list, which tracks if you're after somewhere small and considered rather than a big anonymous beach block.

  85. The town was called Richland before it was called Orange, and this boutique hotel in Old Towne runs with that history without getting museum-y about it. A restored two-story wooden house, a freestanding cottage, a bar and lounge, and an event space are arranged among olive trees. Inside: bespoke wallpaper printed with citrus motifs, exposed beams, craftsman furniture, dark wood. California cool with enough vintage texture to feel like a place, not a set.

  91. The oak grill has been running at Walt's Wharf since before Seal Beach had a Yelp page, and the menu reads like someone actually cares where the fish came from. This is a sit-down seafood restaurant with a serious California sensibility: local catch, local vegetables, and wines from the founding family's own vineyard poured alongside. The room draws regulars who come for the grilled trout and stay for the oysters, and nobody's in a hurry to leave.

  94. Rank 594. 715

    Japanese

An eight-seat sushi counter where the music plays and the chef works in near-silence, assembling each piece with the kind of focus that makes you lower your voice anyway. The nigiri rice leans firm with a whisper of sugar, a nod to the chef's Osaka roots, and the seafood flies in from Japan. A Michelin-starred omakase that skips the reverent hush without losing any of the precision.

  95. Rank 594. Agnes

    American

You walk through a working cheesery to get to your table, which sets the tone for everything that follows. Agnes is a rustic American bistro in Pasadena where a live-fire hearth anchors the room and the menu leans on local produce, house-made pasta, and fried chicken with sambal hot honey. Save room for the Thai banana split, which sounds like a dare and eats like a plan.

  96. Rank 594. Ardor

    Vegetarian Indian

The dining room at this West Hollywood EDITION hotel restaurant looks like a luxury spa that decided to feed people: white velvet booths, staff in beige, and enough greenery to require a groundskeeper. The menu leans vegetable-forward but keeps dry-aged lamb and steaks around for the unconvinced. Prices sit firmly in hotel territory, which the hotel guests seem not to notice.

  97. Rank 594. Asanebo

    Sushi

Fire-glazed stone pottery and Hello Kitty dolls share shelf space in this Studio City sushi shop, which has been at it long enough to qualify as an old-school institution on Ventura Blvd. Three omakase options anchor a menu that unfolds across five pages, including a full page of desserts, which is either ambitious or a gentle warning to pace yourself. The daily specials are the move; the à la carte prices have a way of climbing quietly.

  98. A family Thai restaurant on the Westside where the chef took over from her parents and didn't soften a thing. The menu runs from papaya salad with a real kick to green curry made from fresh chili paste, and the kitchen will calibrate the heat if you ask nicely. The pastries are a quiet surprise, French technique folded into Thai flavors. The Thai tea flan alone justifies staying for dessert.

  99. Rank 594. Bar Sawa

    Edomae Sushi

Finding Bar Sawa involves exterior stairs, a second-floor lobby, a glass door, and an elevator down to the B level, which is either a great story or a reason to arrive early. Once inside, it's a sleek, intimate edomae omakase counter where fish comes largely from Japan and nigiri is finished with nothing more than a brush of nikiri and a touch of yuzu kosho. The kitchen can play it straight or get a little loose, and the cocktail pairing keeps pace.

  100. Low lighting and large paintings set a chic tone at this upscale Italian spot in Newport Beach, where the open kitchen pulls the room's attention without trying too hard. The chef comes from a lineage of cooks and farmers in southern Italy, and the menu moves between wood-fired pizzas and house-made pasta, with tiramisu to close things out. Fine dining prices, but the mood is more candlelit dinner than white-glove occasion.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
