The 100 Best Places to Eat and Stay in San Antonio

The best places to eat and stay in San Antonio, according to the experts: AAA, James Beard Awards, and Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Mixtli comes out on top.

More Less

Nicōsi and Cullum's Attaboy hold the next two places. San Antonio Express-News shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA close behind.

Eat + Stay, change section

Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. Rank 1. Mixtli

    Mexican

Each tasting menu here is built around a different region or era of Mexican cuisine, so the kitchen might be cooking through Oaxacan traditions one month and pre-Columbian ingredients the next. Mixtli is a fine dining restaurant holding a Michelin star and an AAA Five Diamond, and it's the kind of place where the food has a thesis. The team treats Mexico's culinary geography like a curriculum, and somehow the results are as delicious as they are cerebral.

  2. Rank 2. Nicōsi

    Creative Dessert

A dessert-only tasting menu tucked inside Pullman Market, where phones stay pocketed all night by house rule. The multicourse format chases four flavor arcs, acid through sweet, and the kitchen rarely repeats itself season to season. Cotton candy spun tableside and caviar on cheese crackers give you a sense of the register. The chefs narrate as they go, which helps. A Michelin star, and a James Beard nominee for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker.

  3. A chalkboard outside suggests a Champagne breakfast, and inside this little bungalow on the St. Mary's strip, that feels like the most sensible advice you'll get all week. Cullum's Attaboy is a walk-in, counter-service brunch spot doing affordable French luxury, think proper omelets, hollandaise, and caviar appearing with suspicious regularity. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and a James Beard nomination followed.

  4. Rank 3. Isidore

    Steakhouse

A live-fire hearth anchors the open kitchen at this midcentury modern restaurant in San Antonio's Pearl District, where the menu is organized around Texas ingredients and built for sharing, with a dedicated steak section and a Texas-focused wine list. The name nods to the patron saint of farmers, and the sourcing follows through. It holds a Michelin star and landed on the New York Times Restaurant List in 2025.

  5. A little bungalow turned Peruvian ceviche bar where the kitchen leans hard into citrus-cured fish, leche de tigre in several forms, and a pisco sour menu that makes the decision-making easy. The cooking draws from the owners' Peruvian roots, and the flavors are bright and punchy in a way that earns that description. A James Beard nominee two years running, and the cute patio fills up fast.

  6. Rank 6. Burnt Bean Co.

    Texas Barbecue

The line forms before the doors open, which has been the rhythm at this Seguin BBQ shop since Ernest Servantes and Dave Kirkland, both decorated in the competition circuit, opened together. The industrial room with iron beams and exposed brick fills fast. Brisket, ribs, and sausage lean toward tender and lightly smoked rather than aggressively bark-forward. A Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard nomination keep the queue honest.

  7. The bones of a 19th-century brewhouse, chimney stacks and all, give this mid-sized hotel its industrial-chic personality before you even check in. It holds a Michelin 2 Keys distinction and sits inside the Pearl, a riverside stretch that has become San Antonio's most interesting neighborhood, with farmers markets, a CIA campus, and a cluster of serious restaurants all within walking distance.

    The awards

  8. Iron four-poster beds and colonial furnishings fill a building that was, not so long ago, a saddlery. The Mokara is a boutique hotel on the River Walk with a Forbes Four Star rating, a rooftop pool overlooking the water, and a spa serious enough to count as a destination on its own. Ostra, the in-house restaurant, leans into international seafood. A compact, well-appointed stay for people who find the big chain hotels depressing.

  9. Rank 9. Ladino

    Mediterranean

A wood-burning oven churns out sourdough pita at this Mediterranean grill house in San Antonio's Pearl District, where the menu roams from North Africa to the Levant without losing the thread. The terrace overlooks a courtyard, the cocktails lean into the same bold spicing as the food, and the Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand. Dress is casual, the vibe is lively, and the food punches well above the price point.

  10. Rank 9. Mezquite

    Sonoran

Paper-thin flour tortillas arrive with a spread of grilled onion, toreado chili, and black garlic before any protein lands on the table, which tells you where this place is coming from. Mezquite is a Sonoran Mexican restaurant inside Pullman Market, sun-bleached decor and all, serving the hyper-regional cooking of the Sonoran desert rather than anything resembling Tex-Mex. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  11. The Chinoiserie wallpaper alone could anchor a design magazine spread, but this is a Chinese American restaurant where the food keeps pace with the room. The chef started with pop-ups exploring identity and landed somewhere more interesting than a thesis: Korean corn cheese egg rolls, dan dan noodles with wagyu guisada. A James Beard semifinalist, and the Victorian veranda fills up fast on sunny afternoons.

  12. The Crunch Bar dessert has kept regulars coming back to this Castle Hills neighborhood restaurant long enough to feel like a local institution. The menu shifts constantly, landing somewhere between globally curious and quietly unfussy, with vegetables given real attention alongside the occasional surprise like trout roe on crispy polenta. The wine program is serious without making you feel underdressed for it. A 2023 James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Texas.

  13. Rank 12. Reese Bros Barbecue

    Texas Barbecue

Two brothers run this Texas BBQ shop near the stadium, open only Thursday through Saturday, which keeps the line long and the brisket moving fast. The setup is classic smoke-and-queue, but house-made flour tortillas stand in for white bread, and the sides swing toward poblano mac and cheese and okra-laced beans. Texas Monthly named it one of the state's 50 best BBQ joints, which the regulars already knew.

  14. A roll of paper towels sits at the center of every table, and that tells you most of what you need to know about eating here. The Jerk Shack is a Caribbean spot in an industrial space west of downtown, with warehouse floors, high ceilings, and vivid art on the walls. The mixed plate of grilled jerk chicken and fried chicken is where to start. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and the chef was a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas.

  15. Rank 17. 2M Smokehouse

    Central Texas Barbecue

The picadillo mac and cheese earned a shoutout from the New York Times, which tells you something about what this South Side BBQ counter is doing. Everything is cut and weighed market style, so you load your tray with brisket, turkey, and sides that lean hard into Mexican tradition: pickled nopales, street corn, chicharrón mac. A line forms early and moves slowly for good reason. Texas Monthly put it on their statewide list, and a James Beard semifinalist nod followed.

  16. The working brewery behind the bar is the first thing you notice, copper tanks visible through the glass while the dining room fills up around you. This is a Texas American restaurant and brewpub set inside the old Pearl brewhouse, where the kitchen leans hard into Gulf seafood and Southern comfort food. The house beers are brewed on site, and the Michelin Bib Gourmand acknowledges the whole relaxed, unpretentious operation.

  19. The line outside the squat building on Fredericksburg Road has been a fixture of San Antonio mornings, afternoons, and evenings for as long as anyone can remember. This is a Tex-Mex diner in the old sense, the kind where eggs over easy get doused in salsa and scooped up with warm flour tortillas, and where the menu is so sprawling that regulars still haven't covered it. The staff treats everyone like they've been coming for years, which, in many cases, they have.

  23. Rank 28. Barbecue Station

    Central Texas Barbecue

The menu lives on a board, the pits run on post oak and mesquite, and the building used to sell gasoline. This is a barbecue counter in a converted gas station on Loop 410, and it's been going strong for decades. All meat is cut to order, the brisket sandwich arrives on cottony white bread that's somehow exactly right, and Mimi's potato salad, a family recipe, is the side you don't skip. The Michelin Guide has it listed.

  28. Cupcake-pink walls and white trim set the tone at this breezy seafood bar in the King William District, where a tree-shaded patio deck effectively doubles the place on a warm afternoon. The menu revolves around a rotating oyster selection and moves into fish tacos, lobster rolls, and the kind of bright, light seafood that pairs well with a glass of rosé and nowhere particular to be.

  29. Rank 38. Madurai Mes

    South Indian

Southern Indian cooking in a strip mall near the Medical Center, where the booths are scuffed and the lighting belongs in a horror meme but the thalis arrive on banana leaves piled around a mound of white rice. This is the kind of casual, inexpensive spot that fills a real gap, since Northern Indian food tends to dominate the city. The biryanis and Madras curries hold up well for delivery, though the lunch thali is the reason regulars keep coming back.

  35. The cellar bar has been a notorious local nightspot for longer than anyone will admit, which tells you something about the Hotel Havana's bones. This boutique hotel on the Riverwalk keeps its century-old structure intact and layers on a pre-Castro Cuban romance that feels lived-in rather than themed. Rooms start compact but climb quickly toward something genuinely plush. A Michelin Selected Hotel, and one with actual character to justify the billing.

  37. Rank 50. Il Forno

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Wood-decked and genuinely neighborhood in feel, this Neapolitan pizza spot on the south side draws regulars who know the margherita is the thing to order. The crust is soft and blistered the way San Antonio rarely pulls off, and Italian wines by the glass keep prices honest. Patio seating handles groups without the chaos, and the kitchen moves fast enough that you never feel forgotten. 50 Top Pizza USA ranked it among the top 25 in the country.

  38. A river taxi pulls up right to the front door, which tells you something about where this hotel sits on the San Antonio Riverwalk. Rooms run to walnut paneling, teal accents, and gold hardware, with the Presidential Suite adding a marble dining table and floor-to-ceiling city views for anyone who needs convincing. The rooftop pool has a tiki bar, Cavalier does upscale American brasserie downstairs, and the Convention Center crowd is a short walk away.

  39. Eight stone-walled suites with freestanding tubs occupy what was once a 19th-century schoolhouse dedicated to Friedrich Schiller, which is either poetic or a little on the nose. This 347-room boutique hotel blends that preserved historic shell with a tower that layers Bauhaus and Spanish colonial details in together. Ten floors up, the open-air Tenfold rooftop bar has unobstructed views over downtown San Antonio, which does a lot of the selling all by itself.

    The awards

  40. Three 19th-century buildings on the National Register of Historic Places anchor this 253-room hotel spread across four and a half garden acres between Downtown and Southtown. The River Walk is a short walk, but the shaded pathways, big pool, and the Anaqua Garden Bar tucked under the trees make leaving feel optional. A daily tea ceremony under an ancient anaqua tree is the kind of quiet ritual guests mention long after checkout.

    The awards

  41. Rugged wood, leather, and stone textures run through the modernist interiors here, giving the Thompson brand's mid-century aesthetic a quietly Texan edge. This sleek hotel towers above the River Walk, which means the city's restaurants, bars, and shops are essentially at the front door. It's a Hyatt property now, but the design identity has held. The Michelin Guide lists it among its selected hotels.

  58. The menu at this resort seafood restaurant runs long enough that the staff are trained to talk you off the ledge, and they do it graciously. Octopus and venison share billing with the catch, which tells you the kitchen isn't playing a strict concept. The room has the warm, unhurried feel of a place where no one is in a hurry to turn the table, and the wine list matches the menu's ambition.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
