The 33 Best Places to Eat and Drink in Berkeley

The best places to eat and drink in Berkeley, according to the experts: Eater, Los Angeles Times, and San Francisco Chronicle have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Tanzie's comes out on top.

More Less

Chez Panisse and Great China hold the next two places. San Francisco Chronicle shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Michelin Guide next.

Eat + Drink, change section

Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. A mint-green Thai brunch cafe in Berkeley where the food leans toward Chiang Mai, not the usual pad thai circuit. The kitchen draws from northern Thailand and neighboring Laos, so flavors run sour and spicy rather than sweet. The New York Times called out the khanom krok specifically, and the Chronicle put it among the Bay Area's top 100 restaurants. The room is small and greenhouse-warm, the kind of place where nobody's trying to impress you.

  2. Alice Waters put her name on California cooking before it was a category, and the wood-burning oven at the back of this Craftsman dining room has been the argument ever since. Downstairs runs a four-course fixed menu that changes daily with whatever is at peak season; the upstairs café goes à la carte at friendlier prices. No two visits are the same, which is either a feature or a mild anxiety depending on your personality.

  3. A Burgundy list that a Chronicle wine critic called one of the Bay Area's treasures sits inside a Shandong Chinese restaurant across from UC Berkeley, which tells you most of what you need to know. Concrete walls, wood accents, and a line out the door by opening time. The tea-smoked duck and the double-skin noodle salad are the things regulars order without looking up. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  4. Rank 3. Ippuku

    Japanese

Across from a college library, this wood-paneled izakaya has tatami nooks where you remove your shoes and low tables that make the outside world evaporate. The yakitori bar at the back glows with binchotan smoke, and the chicken runs deep, from thigh oysters to knee cartilage. The shochu list is one of the longer ones you'll find anywhere in the Bay Area. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  5. Orders get called out over a crackling intercom at this warehouse-sized Indo canteen and grocery store in Berkeley, where metal trays and disposable sporks set the tone immediately. The chaat is the reason to come, those hollow puffs and tamarind-drenched bites that make the whole elaborate category make sense. Thalis, tandoori chicken, and a glass case of colorful sweets fill out the picture. The San Francisco Chronicle has it in their Top 100 Bay Area restaurants.

  6. Rank 6. Iyasare

    Japanese

A heated patio and a buzzing dining room on Berkeley's Fourth Street, where Japanese technique meets Northern California produce in small plates built for sharing. The chef comes from Japan's Tohoku region, where winters demand serious comfort food, and that instinct carries through a menu that rotates with the season. The Michelin Guide has it selected. Sake, local wine, and creative cocktails all hold their own on the drinks list.

  7. The blue-painted building with a red neon sign on Shattuck Avenue does not undersell what's inside. This is a sousaku izakaya, meaning the menu leans into New Japanese cooking, the kind you'd find in Tokyo or Osaka right now: hot pot, skewers, fried fish cakes, seasonal sashimi added only because regulars kept asking. The menu rotates constantly, which makes repeat visits feel less like loyalty and more like good sense.

  8. Rank 7. La Marcha

    Spanish

The smell of saffron hits you before you reach the door, which is a reasonable promise to make. La Marcha is a Spanish tapas and paella restaurant on San Pablo where the jamón legs hanging in the back corner set the decorative tone. Paellas come in enough variations to anchor a group, and the happy hour draws solo diners to the L-shaped bar for wine and free bites. Rustic, lively, and never quiet.

  9. Rank 9. Comal

    Mexican

The large flat comal griddles that give this Berkeley restaurant its name sit in plain view in the open kitchen, which sets the tone nicely. It's a lively Mexican spot with an industrial-chic room, a heated back patio for year-round dining, and a serious tequila and mezcal list that keeps the noise level honest. The Michelin Bib Gourmand crowd tends to arrive early and order the guacamole before they've opened the menu.

  10. The flower-ringed patio on University Avenue is not accidental: this is Rose Pizzeria, and it commits to the bit. Thin, crispy pies here borrow from every regional tradition and answer to none of them, landing somewhere between Neapolitan char and California confidence. The Caesar with miso and Calabrian chiles is the kind of side dish that makes you forget you ordered pizza. A spot on 50 Top Pizza USA keeps the room lively most nights.

  11. Rank 11. Bar Panisse

    Wine Bar

The fried shrimp comes with aioli, the zucchini blossoms are stuffed, and the whole thing sits next door to Chez Panisse, which is either coincidence or not. Alice Waters is behind this too, a casual wine bar where the farm-to-table reverence is intact but the menu reads lighter and less ceremonious than its famous neighbor. The New York Times gave it two stars in 2026, which for a neighborhood spot serving butter beans is a lot to live down.

  12. Rank 11. Tacubaya

    Mexican

Pink papel picados hang overhead at this counter-service Mexican spot tucked into a Berkeley shopping complex, where the line at the limeade counter is a permanent fixture no matter the hour. Regulars run through chilaquiles at breakfast and sopes by lunch without glancing at the menu. The enchiladas come doused in a smoky guajillo-tomatillo sauce, and the quesadillas with kabocha squash and pecan sauce read more quietly ambitious than a strip-mall taqueria has any obligation to be.

  13. Rank 13. Cheese Board Pizza

    Vegetarian Pizzeria

A worker-owned collective in the Gourmet Ghetto, Cheese Board bakes one vegetarian sourdough pizza per day, rotating with the seasons, and you either want it or you don't. You probably want it. The line wraps around the block most days, but it moves fast, and the green sauce, herby and quietly ferocious, is non-negotiable. Grab a slice, claim a parklet table, and settle into the reliably frenetic sidewalk energy Berkeley does so well.

  14. Rank 13. The Cultured Pickle Shop

    Vegetarian American

Rows of cloudy jars exhaling tiny bubbles line the production kitchen at this small-batch pickle shop and weekend rice-bowl counter in Berkeley. Saturday and Sunday bring a three-course menu built around a maximalist rice bowl piled with the shop's latest ferments: kimchis, citrusy pickles, miso-braised greens. Drinks run to yuzu kombucha or warm ginger amazake. It may be the most Berkeley restaurant of all time, which is saying something.

  15. Rank 15. Fava

    Middle Eastern

A lunch window on Vine Street where the herbs arrive in what can only be described as quantities. The team behind it came up through Chez Panisse, and their California produce fixation reads clearly in the Middle Eastern menu: falafel with a serious crunch, flatbreads buried in mint and dill, yogurt spiked with broccoli and dill. Takeout only, which keeps things honest. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best Berkeley and best Bay Area Middle Eastern spots.

  16. Cherry and oak wood smoke is the throughline at this Berkeley barbecue shop, where the char siu and the smoked chicken land somewhere between American pitmaster and Hong Kong roast house, with a detour through Indian curry along the way. The team behind Huangcheng Noodle House in Oakland built the concept around a father's love of American barbecue, and the collision of those three kitchens is less confused than it sounds.

  17. Rank 15. Lemat

    Ethiopian

Woven Messob baskets hang from the ceiling at this Ethiopian restaurant on Adeline, and the room is clearly built for a party, with a long bar, plush chairs, and a fully adjustable lighting rig that suggests someone once had serious ambitions for the space. Order the meat and veggie combo and let the kitchen do the rest. The 100% teff injera crumbles a little differently than you might expect, which is its own small education.

  18. A Jewish deli in the Bay Area is a rare enough thing that Saul's has been feeding North Berkeley for decades without much competition. The latkes are aggressively crunchy, the pastrami comes fatty and brined on rye with grainy mustard, and raspberry jam sits on every table like a standing invitation. Pancakes are fluffy in the way a diner promises but rarely delivers. Weekend brunch draws a crowd that clearly has nowhere more important to be.

  19. Rank 19. Boichik Bagels

    Bagel Shop

The line outside this Berkeley bagel shop has been there since day one and shows no sign of leaving. Boichik turns out chubby, chewy, malty New York-style bagels, kosher and done traditionally: salt bagels heavy with big sea-salt flakes, pumpernickel baked nearly chocolate-dark. The San Francisco Chronicle named them the Bay Area's best. Cream cheese runs from plain whipped to Hatch chile, and the house-made whitefish salad sandwich makes a strong case for staying.

  20. Rank 19. Pizzeria Da Laura

    Pan Pizzeria

Pan pizza is the move at this Berkeley slice shop, where the chef cycles through New York, Sicilian, Detroit, and Grandma styles depending on what she's feeling. The dough is the point, soft with a good crisp edge, and the toppings stay fresh and unfussy enough not to compete with it. The blue-painted room is cozy without trying too hard. Save room for the Sicilian cannoli.

  22. Hunanese cooking in Berkeley, built around peppers and a kitchen with a particular way with fish. The poached fillets arrive with green peppercorns and pickled chiles that mean business, and a cracked coconut on the side functions as both a prop and a practical necessity. Portions run large at this casual, share-everything Chinese restaurant, and the sticky rice steamed with pork ribs and corn has developed something of a following.

  25. A wok that produces real smoky hei on Indo-Chinese noodles is a good sign you're not at a standard curry house. Munch India is a casual South Asian restaurant in Berkeley that draws from India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, with California produce and the occasional Japanese ingredient folded into the mix. The menu rotates monthly, kebabs go over hardwood charcoal, and everything is available for takeout and delivery.

  26. Hat Yai-style fried chicken is the reason to know this casual Berkeley Thai spot, where a rice flour batter does double duty as marinade and delivers a thin, shattering crust topped with fried shallots. You order from a touch screen, the staff will walk you through the menu, and the sweet chile sauce that comes alongside is fine, but the prik nam pla is the move.

  27. Tomato nigiri, marinated and roasted until it snaps like fish, is probably the argument you'd make to a skeptic. Tane is a vegan izakaya and sushi spot in Berkeley, a sibling to San Francisco's Shizen, where the rice is taken seriously and the plant-based fills lean toward smoked beets and pickled fruit rather than an avocado-forward shrug. The crowd skews Berkeley in all the ways you'd expect, but the food is doing something more interesting than the neighborhood cliché suggests.

  28. Rank 29. El Mono

    Peruvian

The spiral-tailed monkey painted on one wall gives the place its name and its vibe: a cheerful Peruvian restaurant with wood accents and geometric light fixtures that somehow feels both casual and considered. The antojitos trio is a good way in, landing beef hearts, jumbo corn, and causa on the table before you've made any real decisions. The San Francisco Chronicle named it one of Berkeley's best restaurants.

  29. A one-person takeout operation in Berkeley where the pre-orders open at 9 a.m. sharp and are often gone before the place does. The pies are 18-inch, NY-style, with charred and pillowy crusts, and you have to plan around them rather than the other way around. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best Berkeley restaurants, which feels about right for something this inconvenient to obtain.

  30. A small French sandwich shop on Cedar Street where the main event is a buttermilk-fried chicken cutlet on a Semifreddi's roll, craggy-coated and topped with a creamy, spicy slaw. The potato puffs are the other reason people come, little pillowy spheres that have built a loyal following on their own. A few sidewalk tables exist, but most orders leave in a bag headed for Live Oak Park.

  31. Rank 29. Kiraku

    Japanese

The sweet potato brulée, a potato starch custard torched to a glassy crust, gives you a sense of how this Berkeley izakaya operates: familiar enough to land, unexpected enough to stay with you. The menu shifts constantly around a core of Japanese small plates, with daily specials that swing from nigiri to okonomiyaki depending on the chef's mood. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best restaurants in Berkeley.

  32. A marinated pork spit spinning in the window pulls in foot traffic on MLK Way, which is basically the oldest form of advertising. This Chiapas-style taqueria in Berkeley orders you outside to pick up your al pastor, the ruby meat sweet and charred, with pineapple and a green oil salsa alongside. The chicken mole is a serious plate when you want it. Noah's Ark animals frolic across a mural on the wall, keeping things cheerful.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
