  4. A rooftop bar with a Latin-Caribbean lean, a pool bar that explains itself, and a diner that eats healthier than it looks: the East Austin Hotel packs a lot of personality into one address on East 6th. The rooms lean into classic Americana with a modernist eye, and the whole place has that particular Austin quality of caring about the good life without making a production of it. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  21. Rank 198. Texas Chili Parlor

    Texan American

Texas Chili Parlor is a dark, cheap dive bar that happens to serve chili, with a Tex-Mex menu stapled to the side. Enchiladas arrive buried under a scoop of Texas-style chili, which is its own kind of confidence. The Mad Dog margarita is as strong as the name suggests, and a few barstool regulars look like they came with the building. Downtown workers pop in at lunch, then go back to their desks, mostly.

  22. Clawfoot tubs in the loft suites and reading nooks in the singles give The Frances Modern Inn a range that most boutique hotels never bother with. It sits in Central East Austin, a neighborhood where small businesses have held their ground forever, and the in-house restaurant, Siti, runs an unexpectedly focused Southeast Asian kitchen. The Michelin Guide has selected it among its hotels, which tracks for a place this considered.

  26. A koi pond and a fountain anchor the courtyard of this small boutique hotel on South Congress, which is otherwise surrounded by taco bars and boot shops doing brisk business. No front desk, no elevator, no pool: just calm oak-furnished suites with Sferra linens and private wood-lined verandas behind sliding glass doors. The Japanese-inspired restraint makes it feel like the neighborhood's noise belongs to someone else entirely.

  28. Built from scratch on the South Congress lot where Willie Nelson once ran the Austin Opry House, Hotel Magdalena is the newest piece of Bunkhouse Group's quietly growing neighborhood takeover. The design leans into a gentle 1970s warmth without tipping into theme-park nostalgia. It's the kind of hotel that earns its street by knowing exactly where it is, which, on this particular stretch of Austin, counts for a lot.

  49. An antique car parked out front and a glowing neon sign set the tone before you've even checked in. Lone Star Court is a boutique hotel built around the idea of the mid-century motor court, the roadside precursor to the motel, leaning into that retro Texan idiom harder than most places dare. There's live music on the premises, and the service is the unhurried, genuinely gracious kind that Austin boutique hotels aspire to and occasionally deliver.

  57. Rank 257. APT 115

    Wine Bar

The address reads like an apartment number because it is one, a converted unit that functions as an intimate wine bar with a short, serious list leaning toward small producers from both hemispheres. You can stop in for a glass and a charcuterie board or commit to the multicourse tasting menu, where the kitchen moves through things like Hokkaido scallop with red curry and duck cassoulet. The wine and the food compete for your attention in roughly equal measure.

  58. Rank 257. Comedor

    Modern Mexican

The courtyard seats fill first when the weather cooperates, which tells you something about how this modern Mexican restaurant in the Central Business District reads a room. Industrial materials, polished wood, and leather keep things cool without trying too hard. The menu moves between bone marrow tacos and more traditional aguachile without apology, and the tamal de chocolate at the end earns its place on the bill.

  59. Rank 257. Launderette

    Contemporary Diner

A former laundromat on Holly Street, now a bright, buzzy neighborhood restaurant where the patio fills up fast on good weather days. The menu leans creative New American, the cocktail list runs to mezcal negronis and other inventive drinks, and happy hour makes the whole thing an easy excuse to show up on a Tuesday. The Michelin Guide has it on their radar, which tracks.

  60. Rank 257. Siti

    Modern Southeast Asian

Siti sits at the base of the Frances Inn in East Austin, its interior a warm mix of textures that takes Singaporean shop houses as a loose starting point. The neighborhood restaurant pulls from the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia, with a Filipino-rooted chef guiding the menu. Everything is built for sharing, and the char kway teow gets a duck confit leg dropped on top, because why not.

  61. Rank 257. Tare

    Modern Sushi

There's no sign on the second floor of a North Austin office building, just an attendant at the door who knows you're coming. Inside, a dark granite counter sets the stage for a kappo-style omakase built around dry-aged nigiri, fish sourced from Japan with the occasional Texas curveball, think salsa macha or chicharron in the mix. It reads like a cultural argument conducted very politely, one piece at a time.

  62. Rank 257. Terry Black's BBQ

    Central Texas Barbecue

The slow-smoked prime brisket gets sliced to order at the counter, and the bone-in beef ribs are roughly the size of a small child. This is a Central Texas BBQ shop in the classic mode, seating first-come in a well-worn roadhouse big enough to absorb the line that forms outside. Pork ribs and house sausage round out the pit, with potato salad and green beans holding their own on the side.

  63. Rank 265. Habanero Mexican Cafe

    Old-School Mexican

Habanero is an old-school Mexican cafe on Oltorf that does breakfast and lunch and then goes home, so dinner plans need to be made elsewhere. The fajitas come ranchera style, tossed with charred jalapeños, onions, and tomatoes, and the room fills with longtime Austinites and recent transplants who've learned to arrive early on weekends. The Infatuation lists it among Austin's lunch spots, and the huevos gringos are a decent consolation for the wait.

  64. Fifteen acres of Texas Hill Country outside Dripping Springs, where your options range from a yurt to a full four-bedroom Ranch House depending on how many people you're avoiding or inviting. This boutique retreat leans rural without apology: modern-rustic cabins, Porch Houses with wraparound porches and kitchenettes, a bathhouse and pool, and enough nearby wineries and breweries to fill a long weekend without much effort.

  65. A 39-room boutique hotel on three acres above Brushy Creek in Round Rock, north of Austin, where century-old live oaks do most of the decorating. The original farmhouse on the property still stands and now holds the bar, which is the kind of detail that earns a place its character without trying. The surrounding Austin sprawl exists, technically, but you can't really tell from the grounds.

  68. Rank 269. Matok Bakery

    Middle Eastern Bakery

Za'atar buns and feta-filled croissants are the draws at this Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-inspired bakery on South Lamar, which started as a viral pop-up before finding a permanent home. The leap from online orders to a brick-and-mortar is a big one, and plenty of pop-ups don't make it, so the line out front tells you something. Pastries, breads, and cakes round out the case.

  71. The dining rooms are draped in lush plants and Mexican folk art, and for a moment you forget you're in a neighborhood off North Loop. This fine dining institution has been around forever, making the case for regional Mexican cooking long before it was fashionable, with dishes rooted in Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz, and the Yucatan. Dress accordingly, order the cochinita pibil, and let the room do what it does.

  74. Stonewashed walls, seating in every configuration known to humanity, and enough plants to make a botanist emotional set the scene at this coffee shop on East 12th. The front half runs buzzy and social while the back stays quieter, so you can choose your own adventure. The menu covers the usual cafe drinks alongside a few specialty brews, plus breakfast sandwiches and housemade pastries. You can also buy the ivy you've been staring at all morning.

  82. Rank 285. Bufalina Due

    Pizzeria

The wine list here gets talked about almost as much as the pizza, which is saying something given how good the Neapolitan pies are. This Brentwood pizzeria and wine bar keeps things simple: blistered crusts, quality toppings, and an affordable bottle selection that skews interesting rather than obvious. Rotating specials lean seasonal, and the appetizers hold their own. Casual enough for a weeknight, fun enough that you stay for another glass.

  88. Rank 285. Intero

    Contemporary Italian

The pastry chef doubles as a chocolatier, which is either a warning to pace yourself or a reason to skip straight to dessert. This East Cesar Chavez neighborhood Italian spot runs on local farms and whole-animal cooking, so the menu shifts with the season. Pastas and anything with duck tend to anchor whatever's on offer. Before you leave, at least pick up some of the handmade chocolates at the counter.

  89. A pond out front sets the tone at this casual Korean barbecue spot in North Shoal Creek, where the room feels genuinely domestic in the best sense. Tabletop grills handle galbi and duck, a long banchan spread fills the gaps, and the traditional menu runs to budae jjigae, kimbap, and kimchi jeon for anyone not in the mood to tend a fire. Cold sake or yuja ade to drink, group tables throughout.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
