  9. Rank 172. Bar Misera

    Seafood

Tightly packed tables, wine bottles wedged wherever they'll fit, and a menu built around sharing plates with a heavy lean toward seafood: Bar Misera is the kind of casual, slightly chaotic bistro that Nieuw Zuid locals seem to treat as a second living room. The format is snacks first, larger plates to follow, with sides chosen separately. The fish comes bright and acidic, the kind of cooking that makes you slow down.

  10. Fourteen seats, a short menu, and a chef who treats Belgian comfort food as a starting point rather than a destination. Bar Pêche is a tiny modern restaurant where stoemp and sausage gets quietly reimagined, and the cordon bleu arrives with Italian ham and truffle cheese. The room is relaxed, the ideas are not, and the booking list fills up in a way that suggests word got around some time ago.

  13. The meat hooks are still on the wall and the old butcher's tiles are still glazed in color, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Franco-Belgian bistro tucked into a former slaughterhouse. The menu is short and Gallic and cooked without fuss. Bart co-owns and runs the floor on weekends, and his wine knowledge is the kind you want applied directly to your glass.

  32. Rank 172. Blanco

    Mexican

Mexican-inspired food in a beach town known more for its oysters and old money than its tacos. Blanco is a lively, airy restaurant in Knokke where the kitchen folds North Sea fish and European accents into a loosely Mexican frame, leche de tigre and chipotle sitting alongside whatever the coast just pulled in. Natural wine and cocktails run alongside the food, and the room draws a crowd that arrived dressed for it.

  51. Rank 172. Bruut

    Belgian

From the outside it looks like a romantic Bruges townhouse draped in wisteria; inside it's graffiti walls and a chef who clearly has something to prove. Bruut is a tasting-menu-only spot where Bruno Timperman pulls almost everything from within a short drive of the restaurant and turns it into dishes that sound like they shouldn't work but do. The crowd skews adventurous and the wine list leans natural.

  72. Rank 172. Charlu

    Gascon Bistro

A grand old villa in the Saint-Job neighborhood houses this French bistro where the menu runs firmly southwest, cassoulet and pig's trotters and all. Wainscoting, mirrors, and tables packed close enough to overhear your neighbor's wine opinions set the room. The owner's wine opinions are also available, offered freely and at length. Classic bistronomy, cooked with evident conviction.

  84. Pop art canvases inspired by the CoBrA movement cover the walls, setting the tone for a sharing-plates spot that leans casual but pulls it together with a proper bar program. The menu hops across continents without apology, lobster rolls alongside pâté en croûte, a beef entrecôte, tarte Tatin for the finish. Leopoldplaats regulars seem to treat it as a standing arrangement rather than a one-off.

  87. Rank 172. Commotie

    Japanese

A creative restaurant in Gent where the minimalist Japanese decor and leafy terrace lend the whole room a monastic calm, right up until the food arrives and demands your full attention. The chef works through fermentation, open-flame cooking, and sharp acidic sauces, with natural wines chosen by a sommelier who clearly has opinions. The kind of place where quiet surroundings and quietly ambitious cooking end up in an interesting argument.

  91. A log cabin in the Belgian countryside, surrounded by forest, with no obvious reason to be there except a very good one. This is farm-to-table cooking taken at face value: the team sources from local producers with near-evangelical commitment, then turns out seasonal menus that feel like the landscape on a plate. The setting is quiet enough that you notice the food, which is exactly the point.

  93. San Degeimbre's contemporary brasserie sits inside Brussels' converted rail freight terminus, a post-industrial complex that still feels faintly surprised to be hosting dinner. The menu roams Belgium, Peru, and Asia without asking permission, so waterzooi turns up with a jolt of yuzu and duck magret finds itself alongside soy and garlic in an orange sauce. The mezzanine counter overlooking the open kitchen is the seat to ask for.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
