  1. Oak beams, stripped floorboards, and a vegetable patch that shapes the menu: this South Downs gastropub changes its kitchen list daily based on what's growing, foraged, or sourced from nearby suppliers. The cooking is serious without the pub having forgotten it's a pub. Three en-suite rooms upstairs make it a reasonable excuse to stay the night and pretend you live somewhere quieter than you do.

  2. The jet-black exterior marks this Newington Green gastropub from a distance, and the no-reservations policy means you either luck into a cosy booth or end up at a communal table getting absorbed into someone else's evening. Seasonal cocktails, natural wines, and well-kept ales cover the drinks side thoroughly, while the kitchen leans into the kind of confident, unfussy cooking that makes you order another round just to keep eating.

  3. Rank 85. The Royal Oak

    British Pub

A Grade II-listed former coaching inn in a Cotswolds village, The Royal Oak is a gastropub that has kept its creaky, traditional soul while adding a proper dining room, snugs, and a kitchen that takes seasonal cooking seriously. The menu drifts from pub classics into more ambitious territory without making a fuss about it. Mariella Frostrup once called it a blueprint for the low-key bolthole, which about covers it.

  4. Rank 85. The Standard Inn

    Wood-fired Seafood

A wood-fired pub on the Roseland Peninsula from the team behind The Hidden Hut, which means the menu changes with whatever the day boats bring in and the kitchen runs on fire rather than fashion. Seafood anchors the thing, with meat and vegetables given the same careful treatment. It's a proper pub, generous and unfussy, rooted enough in its landscape that the cooking would feel wrong anywhere else.

  5. Rank 85. The Suffield Arms

    Mediterranean Pub

The art on the walls ranges from tasteful to genuinely startling, which sets the tone for a place that refuses to be one thing. The Suffield Arms is a Mediterranean gastropub spread across sharply different rooms: a Victorian bar with local ales and a pool table, a plush cocktail saloon upstairs, and a bright tapas restaurant at the back serving patatas bravas, pizzas, and larger plates. It landed on the Top 50 Gastropubs list, which tracks.

  6. A thatched-roof country pub on the Great River Ouse, The Sun has the kind of postcard exterior that makes you wonder if the food can possibly keep up. It does. The kitchen runs its own farm, so "local ingredients" isn't just menu copywriting here. The bar hatch turns out goat curry and fritto misto alongside pints, while the seasonal tasting menu leans into beef shin, smoked trout, and whatever the farm is doing that week.

  7. Rank 85. The Swan

    British Pub

A Devon country pub where the kitchen forages, ferments, and smokes most of what ends up on your plate. The menu reads like a walk across the local landscape, duck fat hash browns alongside venison "sausage" and pickled walnut, with real ale treated as seriously as the food. A monthly communal supper packs strangers around the same table for three family-style courses, which is either your idea of heaven or the reason you book early to avoid it.

  8. A stream runs alongside the terrace at this rural Worcestershire gastropub, which reopened after a full refurbishment and is now drawing people out from the city. The chef came up through Carters of Moseley, and the menu sits comfortably between proper pub food and something a bit more considered: battered haddock sits beside seabass with lobster bisque, and neither feels out of place. Menus turn with the seasons, the interior is cosy, and the desserts reportedly justify the drive.

  10. A thatched Wiltshire pub sitting on the edge of Salisbury Plain, decorated with the kind of collected-over-decades clutter that no interior designer could fake. The kitchen is classically trained and takes its sourcing seriously, sending out generously flavoured dishes that feel grounded rather than showy. Rooms with private terraces overlook the river, which makes the argument for staying over so you can explore the countryside at a pace that isn't frantic.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
