The Best Places in Houston

All, change section

Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

Kinds of places

Cuisines

  1. A coffee shop and cocktail bar where the menu refuses to pick a lane, and that's the whole point. Weekend brunch runs from oysters with aguachile granita to chilaquiles and lobster rolls, while the drinks column blurs the line with carajillos and cold-brew shakерatos. The Caesar cups, eaten by hand, are a specific kind of commitment. A Rex Hospitality project in the Sawyer Yards neighborhood.

  2. Rank 88. Nickel City

    Cocktail Bar

The deep whiskey list is the tell: Nickel City is a cocktail bar that takes its drinks seriously without taking itself seriously. An Austin transplant now rooted in the East End, it pulls off the trick of being a genuine neighborhood hangout and a credible bar program at the same time. Hot dogs and mozzarella sticks handle the rest. A Top 10 U.S. Nominee at the Spirited Awards keeps the credentials honest.

  3. Tortillas made on-site and griddled all day set the tone at this counter-service taqueria tucked into Finn Hall in downtown Houston. The chicharrón, cured pork belly with pumpkin seed vinaigrette and crispy shallots, is the kind of thing you think about later. Breakfast tacos and a cult carrot taco round out a menu that's more considered than the food-hall setting suggests. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  4. Rank 88. Phat Eatery

    Malaysian

Flaky roti canai folded and crisped to order, torn apart and dragged through curry, is the move that explains Phat Eatery in a single gesture. This casual Malaysian street food spot in Katy draws a crowd happy to share plates of Hainanese chicken, beef rendang, and satay across a loud, affordable table. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas, which for a strip-mall canteen in the Houston suburbs is a sentence worth sitting with.

  5. The cold drip is made to order and poured over ice in front of you, which is either theater or reassurance depending on how many times you've been handed yesterday's batch somewhere else. This Downtown coffee shop leans into iced drinks and frappe-style blends, with oat milk as the default and brown sugar, honey, or cinnamon doing most of the flavor work. Breakfast tacos and pastries fill out the menu, and grab-and-go bottles cover the days when patience runs short.

  6. The light pours through floor-to-ceiling windows in a way that makes everyone look like they're having a good morning, even before the coffee. Sunday Press is an all-day café with a drive-through, a solid espresso program, and a menu that stretches to açai bowls and sandwiches for when coffee alone won't cut it. Come evening it quietly becomes a cocktail lounge, which is either convenient or dangerous depending on your schedule.

  8. A food truck parked across from West Alabama Ice House, which makes the move obvious: grab barbacoa or chicharron tacos here, then carry them next door to a picnic table with a cold beer. The fillings are generous and the price point belongs to a different era. It's been a Montrose fixture forever, and the crowd has never needed a reason to overthink it.

  10. Rank 88. Third Place

    Collaborative Coffee

The name is a sociologist's term for the gathering spots between home and work, and the owners take it literally. This daytime coffee shop and café shares a kitchen with the restaurant Jun, run by Top Chef alums, and rotating chef residencies mean the lunch menu shifts week to week. Pastries, salads, and matcha drinks anchor the everyday offerings, but the rotating kitchen keeps the regulars checking Instagram before they order.

  11. Rank 88. Uchi

    Sushi

Uchi runs omakase and à la carte Japanese small plates out of a warm, low-lit room on Westheimer that fills up fast enough to make a reservation feel non-negotiable. The chef's background is in Austin, where the original location built a following, and the Houston room carries the same ethos: precise, inventive bites plated like someone actually thought about where to put them. Happy hour runs from four to six for anyone watching the tab.

  12. Rank 88. Un Caffe

    Coffee

A frozen coffee bear rides the top of the iced citrus Americano here, keeping the drink cold without diluting it, which tells you everything about how seriously this Midtown coffee shop thinks about a cup. The beans are sourced globally and roasted in-house, and the room runs warm enough that regulars tend to linger. Somewhere between a neighborhood hangout and a serious roaster's project.

  13. Villa Arcos is a small red shack on Navigation in the East End that serves breakfast tacos wrapped in foil, the way nature and the neighborhood intended. The flour tortillas are soft and stuffed past reason, and you order a couple at the window for a few bucks. Politicians, construction crews, and recent Montrose arrivals all stand in the same line, which is about as bipartisan as Houston gets before 9 a.m.

  14. Rank 88. Xela

    Coffee

  15. Rank 115. 13 Celsius

    Wine Bar

The wine list runs from skin-contact naturals to premier cru Burgundy, which tells you this Midtown wine bar is not trying to be one thing. It's been around forever, long enough to have shaped Houston's wine culture before anyone here was talking about orange wine. The cheese and charcuterie plate is an honest reason to stay for a second glass. The room is low-key and comfortable, the kind of place regulars treat as a standing appointment.

  17. Rank 115. Candente

    Tex-Mex

The fajitas arrive on a sizzling cast-iron skillet, prime Niman Ranch beef with charred onions and tortillas made from brisket trimmings, which tells you everything about how this Tex-Mex restaurant operates. From the team behind the Pit Room next door, Candente is enormous, patio and all, and the kitchen swings for the scale. Weekend brunch turns into a full production. The Michelin Guide has it listed among their selected Houston picks.

  19. Rank 115. Eight Row Flint

    Cocktail Bar

Eight Row Flint is a whiskey bar in a former mid-century dry cleaner in the Heights, and the back bar is stocked like it's expecting a long siege. The drink menu runs to a small-novella 25 pages, there are big casks of the good stuff, and you can rent a locker for your own bottles if you want to be That Whiskey Person. The patio is huge, the cheeseburger and wings keep the evening honest, and the margaritas get a lot of press.

  20. Grand Prize is a two-story dive where the interior is blacked out so thoroughly that the neon is mostly there to help you read the drink menu. Happy hour offers a "Happy Meal," which is a beer and a shot, and the pool tables are good for losing to a stranger. The kitchen rotates through bar food, birria tacos one week and chili-cheese dogs the next, and the terrace is where you go to confirm the sun still exists.

  22. Rank 115. Kiran's

    Contemporary Awadhi

Kiran Verma describes her fine dining restaurant as "Indian hospitality with French sophistication and American informality," which sounds like a manifesto until the papadum nachos arrive and you realize she means it. The kitchen draws from the slow-cooked Awadhi traditions of Northern India, folding them into a contemporary menu that includes an afternoon tea service. Verma was a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas in 2023.

  24. Rank 115. Lei Low

    Tiki Bar

Lei Low is a tiny tiki bar in the Heights where the grass cloth, palm trees, and tropical tchotchkes do most of the travel planning. The rum selection is deep enough to require a plan, and the Navy Grog and Singapore Sling are on hand for people who like their classics served with a tiny umbrella's worth of conviction. Large-format drinks are built for splitting, which makes this a good place to find out who in your group can share.

  25. Frozen cocktails and build-your-own pizzas under the same roof sounds like a fever dream, but Monkey's Tail makes it work. This neighborhood bar in Fulton keeps things loose and colorful while running a cocktail program weighted heavily toward tequila and mezcal. The frozen drinks are a genuine draw, and the food menu swings wide enough, tacos, burgers, aguachiles, that no one in the group goes home grumpy.

  26. Rank 115. Two Headed Dog

    Cocktail Bar

The bathrooms are papered in decoupaged vintage Playboys, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Midtown dive bar. Named after a Roky Erickson song, Two Headed Dog leans hard into its free-spirited brief, with a colorful patio and a rotating cocktail menu that punches well above the surroundings. The frozen drinks are a particular draw for anyone who finds serious cocktail bars a little exhausting.

  27. Voodoo Queen Daiquiri Dive in the East End is a dive bar that also contains an arcade, a po'boy counter, and eight frozen drink machines churning like a laundromat for neon. Pool and air hockey keep the hands busy, and the menu runs to fried shrimp, hush puppies, and tater tots under roast beef. Come in jeans, split a flaming tiki boat with whoever you trust most, and expect to leave with a very green tongue.

  28. A shack-shaped neighborhood bar that has been selling cold drinks since it sold actual ice, back when that was a business. Lone Stars flow at red picnic tables under open sky, dogs wander in, and a taco truck across the street handles food duties. Houston has a whole category named after places like this, and Houstonians will tell you, with some feeling, that the others are impostors.

  29. Rank 130. Burger Bodega

    Smashburger American

The smashburger here started as a pop-up, and the crispy-edged, cheese-laced results made a permanent address feel inevitable. This is a casual counter-service spot on Washington Avenue doing smashburgers with special sauce, loaded fries, and milkshakes in a room that leans into the gritty aesthetic of a New York bodega. The chopped cheese quietly competes with the burgers for most people's attention by the second visit.

  31. Rank 130. Okto

    Mediterranean

The warm Frena arrives with pistachio butter, olives, and pickled peppers, and that's more or less the tone of the whole meal. Okto is a Mediterranean restaurant that draws a devoted Sunday brunch crowd, the kind that photographs first and eats immediately after. The cocktail list gets as much attention as the food, and the espresso martini seems to outnumber the people ordering coffee.

  32. A casual East Downtown wine bar and pizza spot where the menu shifts with the seasons but fennel sausage pizza and rigatoni Bolognese tend to anchor things. The vegetable dishes punch above their station, like a cabbage salad in pistachio-apricot agrodolce that sounds like a dare and tastes like a plan. 34. Every room at Hotel ZaZa Memorial City has its own distinct decor, and the overall look lands somewhere between gallery and fever dream, in the best possible, most deliberate way. This boutique hotel on the west side brings the brand's signature mix of maximalist design and genuine comfort to a city that doesn't get enough of either. Michelin recognized it with one Key. Taiwanese Noodle Shop

San Dong is a Taiwanese noodle house on Bellaire Blvd where the forks, spoons, and bowls are all the to-go kind, and you grab your own containers off a shelf like it's a very small hardware store. The menu is beef noodle soup and pan-fried or steamed dumplings, and a full meal for two comes in under $20. Bring cash, tip the cashier, and don't expect much elbow room.

  37. Jasmine fried rice loaded with fried egg and Chinese sausage arrives under two thick slabs of smoked brisket, which is the entire thesis of this family-run barbecue spot on Highway 6. The chef turned a backyard hobby into a line that wraps around the parking lot, and the crowd moves through faster than you'd expect. Pork ribs get the same patient smoke treatment. This is the kind of place where ordering anything else feels like a distraction.

  38. Rank 139. El Taconazo

    Mexican Food Truck

The hood of your car doubles as your table at this late-night taco truck on Fulton, where the line forms fast after the bars close and moves just as fast. Fajita tacos with Oaxacan cheese and a creamy green salsa that bites back are the reason to show up, along with a Mexican Coke cold enough to justify the wait. No seating, no frills, just the sidewalk and whoever else is hungry at this hour.

  39. Rank 139. El Tiempo Cantina

    Tex-Mex Cantina

El Tiempo is a Tex-Mex cantina in Upper Kirby, run by Mama Ninfa's son, which makes the Houston argument over this one versus Ninfa's something close to a family dispute with a public comment section. Wooden tables, high archways, and relics on the walls set the scene, and it's loud in the fun way without being unthinkable. The carnitas arrive sizzling over coals, and pitchers of house margaritas tend to follow.

  40. Rank 139. Gerardo's

    Mexican

A bleached cow skull in the parking lot tells you everything about Gerardo's Drive In, a weekend-only taqueria and meat market on the Northside that's been steaming barbacoa since the late '70s. You can sit down to a few tacos, buy meat by the pound, or take home an entire cow's head, which is a very specific kind of leftovers. It's casual, cheap, and made for people who plan their Saturdays around lunch.

  41. Laredo Taqueria is a no-frills counter-service taco spot where the steam table does the talking and the flour tortillas do the heavy lifting. Expect a line, and expect the regulars ahead of you to know their order cold, so use the wait to study the breakfast and lunch options. Ordering on corn is permitted, but you'll be skipping the thing that holds every breakfast taco here together. Cash-in-pocket prices, work-boots-to-business-casual crowd.

  42. Rank 139. Molina's Cantina

    Tex-Mex Cantina

A Tex-Mex cantina where half the menu is named after actual customers, which makes ordering feel like reading a very cheesy yearbook. The Berlys Burrito comes smothered in chili con carne, and the plates are built for people who skipped lunch on purpose. It's casual, sauce-forward, and old-school Houston, with margaritas that have won local best-of lists and tend to arrive before you've finished sitting down.

  43. Sylvia's is a relaxed, family-run Mexican restaurant on Woodway where the menu is basically one long argument about enchiladas, each named after a city in Mexico or Texas. They come under chili gravy, mole, or salsa verde, and the servers will happily bend the menu around you. The mini sampler lets you try several before committing, which is how regulars settled on their favorite. It was a James Beard semifinalist, Best Chef: Texas.

  44. Rank 139. Thiên Thanh

    Vietnamese

A cash-only Vietnamese lunch spot in a Bellaire Boulevard strip center that sets a giant pitcher of fish sauce on every table before you've said a word, which tells you what the afternoon holds. The specialty is bánh cuốn, soft rice paper crepes folded around mushrooms, grilled pork, and dried shrimp. You add the bean sprouts yourself and dunk accordingly. Bring bills, a loose waistband, and zero concern about your shirt.

The Dough Boy, a scoop pressed between a warm powdered-sugar doughnut, is the order that ends up in everyone's photos. Call ahead to confirm your flavor is in stock, or risk making choices you weren't prepared for.

One brick-and-mortar location in the city, plus a spot at Hobby Airport, with scoops popping up at bars and coffee shops around town.

About fifteen flavors rotate through the case, including a few vegan ones with names like unicorn tracks. Half scoops are allowed, which is how undecided people get two flavors without the guilt of a second full scoop. Expect strollers, sugar, and a lot of photos of cones.

  53. Rank 147. milk + sugar

    Ice Cream Shop

The pandan-and-chrysanthemum swirl was added hesitantly and sold out immediately, which tells you most of what you need to know about this ice cream shop. Milk + Sugar keeps 16 flavors in rotation, built around a simple premise: take desserts people already love and churn them into scoops. The brown sugar waffle cone is worth the upgrade. Additional locations in the Heights and West University.

  54. Rank 147. Popston

    Dessert

  55. A complimentary splash of bubbles lands on your table the moment you sit down, which sets the tone nicely for a Montrose pizza and pasta spot that's got more going on than it lets on. The wood-fired oven does most of the talking, and the honey cake with crème fraîche gelato has a way of making people miss their plans. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, and the wine list is longer than you'd expect.

  56. A grand marble staircase and gold-accented lobby set the tone at this downtown Houston hotel, which has the Art Deco personality that most convention-district addresses skip entirely. The 223 rooms come with soaking tubs and rain showers, Hull & Oak handles Southern food and tequila downstairs, and The Deck rooftop bar handles evenings. Toyota Center and the Theater District are both a short walk away.

    The awards

  57. Rank 147. Tiny's Milk & Cookies

    Ice Cream Shop

Tiny's is an ice cream shack with a seaside look that somehow got built in the middle of Houston, nowhere near any sea. The line runs long and heavy with strollers until about 4:30, when everyone leaves for dinner. The metal benches outside turn into griddles in summer, so plan to walk with your cone. The namesake flavor comes with freshly baked cookies blended in, and the pistachio neapolitan covers three flavors at once.

  58. Tío Trompo is a counter-service taco joint near Buffalo Bayou Park, where the main entertainment is watching pork get shaved off a spinning trompo while you wait. The floral tablecloths add a note of grandmother's dining room to an otherwise no-frills operation. Order at the counter, go for the three-taco platter, and know that the breakfast tacos keep going all day, so nobody has to rush.

  59. Rank 147. Underground Creamery

    Ice Cream Shop

  60. A downtown Houston hotel where the saddle-colored leather headboards and earth-toned rugs make it feel like a ranch house that somehow ended up on the 20th floor. The whole place is a tribute to trailblazing Texan women, and every room and the chic lobby bar was designed by female talent. Rooms are spacious, rocking chairs sit by floor-to-ceiling windows, and the top-floor suite comes with a formal dining room and soaking tub.

    The awards

  61. Rank 165. Crawfish Cafe

    Cajun & Creole

Real butter and sugar go into the crawfish boil here, which tilts the whole thing sweeter than the standard Cajun approach. This Viet-Cajun seafood spot on Bellaire runs a long roster of sauces, from garlic butter to Thai basil, and lets you mix them into something entirely your own. The menu does what it promises and little else, which in this corner of Houston is plenty.

  65. The Lancaster has been hosting Theater District performers since forever, and the walls haven't forgotten: over 200 works by local Texas artists line the corridors of this downtown Houston hotel. Rooms run classic and comfortable, the restaurant handles American standards, and there's an afternoon tea service that gives way to cocktail hour with a straight face. The kind of place that still takes curtain times seriously.

    The awards

  66. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame either the Houston skyline or Buffalo Bayou Park depending on which way your room faces, which is a nice problem to have. This boutique-style full-service hotel runs midcentury modern throughout its rooms and suites, with spa showers and high-end linens doing the heavy lifting. The rooftop pool is one of the larger ones in the city, and there's a coffee shop and a steakhouse when you surface.

  67. Rank 174. Gatlin’s BBQ

    East Texas Barbecue

East Texas-style barbecue joint that also does breakfast, which tells you something about how seriously Houston takes its mornings. The smoker runs through brisket, ribs, sausage, turkey, and chicken, and the sides, dirty rice and baked beans among them, hold their own. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist in 2023. Been a neighborhood staple long enough that ordering without looking at the menu is a point of local pride.

  68. Greenery woven through the lobby sets the tone at this 299-room hotel sitting at the corner of the 610 loop and Westheimer, a short walk from both River Oaks District and the Galleria. The design leans into natural textures and custom linens, giving it a lush, almost residential feel. Upstairs, a rooftop bar; downstairs, Richard Sandoval's wood-fire Mexican restaurant. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected Houston hotels.

  69. An 1866 Greek Revival mansion on a street that time forgot, Carr Mansion is an adults-only boutique bed and breakfast with a Michelin Key to its name. An Austin designer worked through every room without flattening them into a theme, so each one lands differently. Galveston is already an odd, beautiful detour from Houston, and this house, which has lived several lives before landing here, fits the island perfectly.

    Pan-Asian

The Indian-spiced Southern fried chicken has drawn pilgrims to this Indo-Pakistani restaurant in Houston's Gandhi District for years, and chef Kaiser Lashkari keeps adding reasons to return. Pakistani pastrami, Indian quesadillas, Hyderabadi and Punjabi curries, Goan salmon, mango tres leches: the menu moves around the subcontinent without apology. Anthony Bourdain came through, which tracks. A James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas.

  89. A Mexican café tucked into a shopping center that most people would drive past without a second look, though the tables spilling outside on weekends suggest others have figured it out. Pan dulce comes straight from the display case, the migas and huevos rancheros are the kind of thing you come back for on a bad Tuesday, and the cinnamon coffee is its own reason to show up. Cash-register Spanish, homey enough to linger.

  90. Rank 196. Mayahuel

    Mexico City Mexican

Named for the Aztec goddess of agave and fertility, this Mexico City-inspired restaurant in Autry Park takes the naming convention seriously: the agave bar runs on additive-free spirits and the cocktail list splits neatly into light-and-refreshing versus smoky-and-heavy. Netflix-familiar chef Luis Robledo Richards brings the kind of menu that sits just below fine dining in category but not in ambition, with brunch drawing the weekend crowd for chilaquiles and a Mexico City eggs Benedict.

    Hidalguense Mexican

The lamb goes into a pit lined with maguey leaves, comes out fall-off-the-bone tender, and lands on your table alongside consommé and a cactus salad. This casual Mexican restaurant on a resolutely unglamorous stretch of Long Point Road in Spring Branch specializes in the cooking of Hidalgo, which means the barbacoa de borrego is the thing to order. The New York Times put it on their 2023 Restaurant List, which is a long way to travel for a pit-smoked lamb, and not far enough.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
