  2. Rank 2. César

    Seafood

A former printing house in SoHo now holds one of the more decorated new tasting menus in the country: two Michelin stars and a spot on the World's 50 Best, all within its first year. César Ramirez builds a 13-course seafood-focused menu from a lifetime of detours, Mexico, Chicago, French kitchens, and long stretches in Japan, with sauces precise enough to settle any argument. The room is spare and the counter seats face the kitchen, which is exactly the point.

  3. Rank 3. Mama's Too

    Sicilian

The triangular house slice here has a quiet cult following, which is funny for a spot that built its name on thick, square Sicilian cuts. This is a counter-service pizza shop where the square pies come topped with things like cacio e pepe and street corn, and the olive oil and grated Parm on the regular slice draws inevitable Di Fara comparisons. Time Out put the cacio e pepe among the best pizzas in the world, if that helps you decide.

  4. Ten seats at a sleek counter on a cobblestoned West Village street, and the whole meal is in the chef's hands. Daisuke Nakazawa's omakase moves through a parade of nigiri, each piece built from deeply seasoned rice, a touch of wasabi, and a careful brush of nikiri. The fish skews fatty and tender in ways that tend to make regulars go quiet. One Michelin star, and a price point slightly more forgiving than the city's other serious sushi rooms.

  5. The open kitchen glows at the center of the room like the whole thing was staged, which it sort of was, by Daniel Rose. This is a proper French fine dining restaurant, unapologetically so, with a Michelin star and a menu that runs to quenelles and sweetbreads without a trace of irony. The crowd is worth watching but so is the food, which is classical enough to feel like a lesson and personal enough to feel alive.

  6. Bare wood farm tables, whitewashed brick, and a risotto cacio e pepe that regulars will happily order twice: Via Carota is a West Village Italian restaurant where the room feels like a farmhouse and the cooking feels like someone's very talented relative took over the kitchen. Reservations go fast, so plan ahead. The James Beard Awards named it an Outstanding Restaurant Semifinalist, and the lines outside suggest most of the neighborhood agrees.

  7. Rank 7. Katana Kitten

    Japanese Cocktail Bar

Highballs and boilermakers anchor the menu at this jovial Japanese cocktail bar tucked into a Greenwich Village basement, where the drinks list stays refreshingly short and Japanese spirits do most of the talking. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list, which feels about right for a room that punches well above its unpretentious footprint. Go for the sake selection if you're curious; stay for the cocktails once you are.

  8. Rank 8. Crevette

    Mediterranean Seafood

White tablecloths and cream walls give Crevette the look of a classic European brasserie, but the cooking runs along the coasts of Spain and France with enough color to make you forget Manhattan is outside. This is a proper seafood restaurant, lively and full, with the bar pulling its own crowd. The team behind Lord's and Dame keeps the room humming and the martini list pointed.

  9. Rank 8. Dante

    Italian Cocktail Bar

A full page of negronis is either a menu or a dare, and Dante in Greenwich Village has been inviting people to find out for longer than anyone cares to count. This Italian cocktail cafe and all-day aperitivo spot leans into its old-school bones without getting musty about it, pairing the drinks with burrata and charcuterie. Named a James Beard Outstanding Bar semifinalist and ranked on North America's 50 Best Bars list.

  10. Rank 8. Employees Only

    Cocktail Bar

A fortune-teller in the window is not a gimmick so much as a promise about the evening ahead. Past the red velvet curtains, this art deco cocktail bar on Hudson Street runs to carved wood, marble floors, a tin ceiling, and an onyx fireplace, all of it suggesting you should order something serious and stay a while. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list, which the regulars probably already knew.

  12. Rank 12. Angel’s Share

    Japanese Cocktail Bar

The unmarked door on the second floor of a Japanese restaurant looks exactly like where a broom lives, which is precisely the point. Angel's Share is a speakeasy-style cocktail bar with booth banquettes, bare brick, velvet curtains, and lighting set to confession-booth low. It landed on North America's 50 Best Bars list, and the room feels like it has always known that. Come early, come two, and find the door before someone else needs the mop.

  13. Rank 12. Jeju Noodle Bar

    Korean Noodle Shop

A counter seat at this intimate Korean noodle bar puts you close enough to watch the pork bone broth hit the bowl, which is half the point. The menu is short and the prices are low for a Michelin-starred kitchen in the West Village. Gochu ramyun is the draw, but the kitchen moves between broth, salad, and rice with enough range that nothing feels like an afterthought.

  15. Rank 15. King

    Mediterranean

The menu changes daily and fits on a single card, which tells you most of what you need to know about King. This SoHo neighborhood restaurant runs a short Mediterranean lineup built around whatever looks good at the greenmarket, with a bar up front that fills early and an intimate back room hung with bright art. The team met at London's River Café, and that unhurried confidence shows in food that makes simplicity seem like a deliberate flex.

  16. Rank 15. Raoul's

    French

Raoul's has been on Prince Street since before SoHo had a real estate pitch, and the art-crammed walls still feel like a bohemian time capsule in the best possible, no wait, a very specific way: the kind of French bistro where regulars order without looking up and the tableside hot fudge on profiteroles arrives like a point being made. The cooking is French American, the vibe is lived-in, and the cocktails arrive before the nostalgia sets in.

  17. The pressed-tin ceilings and Art Deco mirrors have been pulling SoHo together since the nineties, and Balthazar still runs the same play: a classic French brasserie where the onion soup gratinée and steak frites are the point, not a consolation prize. The room is cavernous and warm, the crowd ranges from fashion people to tourists who did their homework, and the whole thing hums along like it has nothing left to prove.

  20. The hot ham with melted Swiss on a bun costs $7, which tells you almost everything about this retro burger shop. George Motz has spent his career obsessing over regional American hamburger joints, and the menu reflects that slightly unhinged dedication, with monthly tributes to obscure local styles and an off-menu grilled cheese that hides a burger inside. The New York Times named it one of New York's best new restaurants of 2024.

  21. The booths at this coal-oven pizza parlor are so carved up with initials and signatures that the wood itself is basically a guestbook for the last several decades of Greenwich Village. Whole pies only, thin-crusted and charred just right, no slices and no exceptions. The room is loud, cheerful, and not trying to impress anyone, which is precisely why it has been full since before most of its customers were born.

  24. Flynn McGarry's two-Michelin-star restaurant in Hudson Square runs its own Long Island farm, and the à la carte menu and tasting menu both show it. The dining room is tall-ceilinged and wood-lined in a way that reads warm rather than cold, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. Californian instincts meet New York ambition, and the cooking has a playful quality that never tips into precious.

  25. When a pithivier comes out of the kitchen at Le Chêne, the whole room looks, and it earns the attention. This snug West Village French restaurant holds two Michelin stars and cooks like it's proving a point about classical technique, foie gras terrines, vin jaune sauces, and all. Tables are packed close, the ceiling is low, and a curved bar up front takes walk-ins. The wine list is serious and runs deep.

  26. Tucked inside the Cherry Lane Theatre, this intimate cocktail bar and bistro from the Frenchette team runs a roving menu that moves from raw bar to steak tartare to fried frog legs with garlic butter, and somehow also a cheeseburger that regulars order without apology. Amber globe lights, curved bar, green banquettes: the room is doing its job quietly. Frozen custard or another round of cocktails closes things out. Reservations are scarce, so plan accordingly.

  27. The sage-green tiles and gleaming copper pans of the open kitchen are as composed as the plates coming out of it. La Mercerie is a fine dining French restaurant tucked inside Roman and Williams' SoHo emporium, and the room leans hard into its own beauty, tiny tables, delicate blooms, and a lunch crowd dressed like they have somewhere even better to be afterward. The menu runs to careful, classic indulgence: consommé, profiteroles, tarte tatin.

  28. The carriage house bones are the whole point: a fireplace center stage in winter, and windows that swing open onto a cobblestoned side street in summer, letting Barrow Street essentially become part of the room. This is a fine dining institution that New Yorkers bring people to when they want the city to do the heavy lifting, which it does without much trouble. The kind of place that makes a Tuesday feel like an occasion.

  29. Rank 28. Zimmi's

    French

The madeleines come out warm, baked to order, gilded nearly brown at the edges, and the Times critic named them among her favorite dishes of the year without mentioning Proust once, which takes restraint. Zimmi's is a rustic Southern French bistro on Bedford Street, the kind of place that makes butter-and-lemon sponge cake feel like an event without making a production of it. West Village regulars fill the room early.

  32. The honey cardamom toast alone sends a signal about where the Noortwyck's head is at. This West Village neighborhood restaurant comes from Eleven Madison Park alums, and the menu moves between oysters and cinnamon rolls without blinking. The New York Times gave it two stars. Service has that unhurried quality that makes you feel less like a table and more like a regular, even on your first visit.

  33. Temaki, or hand rolls, are the whole point here, served open-style and passed directly from the crew to the counter while the nori is still crisp. The room is all blonde wood and gray-blue cushions, casual and unhurried in a way that West Village sushi rarely bothers to be. The plant-based options get the same care as the fish. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, for whatever that tells you about the price-to-pleasure math.

  34. The soup dumplings in the crab version are reason enough to find a table at this polished SoHo Chinese restaurant, where the room runs lanterns and a front bar and the kitchen turns out food that feels more Flushing than fashionable. The scallion pancake martini is exactly the kind of thing you order to prove you've read the menu. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, and the wine list is notably more considered than you'd expect.

  35. Rank 36. Laliko

    Georgian Eastern European

A West Village Georgian restaurant where the wine list runs entirely from the Caucasus and the servers teach you how to eat khinkali before you embarrass yourself. Those large, broth-filled dumplings are the move, though the khachapuri, in either its cheese-molten or mint-bright form, will slow you down first. A long communal table anchors a room hung with murals. Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  37. Suma katsuo, a buttery fish rarely seen outside Japan, gets cold-smoked over cherry wood and finished with onion sauce, sesame, and nori at this intimate omakase counter on Prince Street. The New York Times named that sashimi course one of the top dishes of 2024. Chef Ben Chen's approach is precise without being fussy, and the room rewards the kind of guest who came to pay attention rather than to be seen.

  38. Rank 40. I Sodi

    Italian

A reservation here is the kind of thing West Village regulars treat as a competitive sport, so walk-ins at odd hours are the move. Rita Sodi's cozy Italian neighborhood restaurant on Bleecker changes its daily specials with the seasons while holding certain signatures hostage in the best way. The bar handles a Negroni with conviction, and the room hums all night with the particular energy of a place where nobody looks like they're having a bad time.

  40. Rank 45. The Eighty Six

    Steakhouse

The name nods to the culinary slang for "out of stock," and supposedly the slang nods back to this building. That circular logic fits a steakhouse so committed to provenance it sources mature Spanish Vaca Vieja cattle from a New Jersey farm and reads its beef list less like a menu than a position paper. A Himalayan salt ageing room sits below the original Prohibition-era bar. The cut gets cooked on a Spanish plancha, a broiler, or Japanese binchōtan, whichever suits that particular animal.

  42. Amber walls, wine bottles stacked everywhere, and ceilings high enough that SoHo feels a little less cramped. Altro Paradiso is an Italian restaurant from Ignacio Mattos where the pasta rotates with the seasons and the salads get their own devoted following, which is not something you say about many places. It fills up fast, and the room has that rare quality of feeling both stylish and genuinely comfortable at the same time.

  43. A West Village dinner spot named after the owner's aunt, which tells you something about the register: personal, unhurried, the kind of small room where the staff actually knows what's on the plate. The contemporary menu rotates with the seasons and pulls from French, Asian, and Latin cooking without committing to any one flag. Vegetable scraps become sauces and pastas, so the zero-waste philosophy shows up in the food rather than just on the website.

  44. Rank 47. Le Gigot

    Bistro

A narrow room on Cornelia Street, candles on small tables, the whole thing feeling like it was airlifted from a Paris side street and set down quietly in the West Village. Le Gigot is a classic French bistro where the staff seem pleased to see you, which isn't as common as it should be. The menu runs cassoulet, bouillabaisse, tarte tatin, and all the old reliables, done with enough care that you stop noticing how familiar they are.

    The awards

  45. A large red paper clip on the facade is the only sign out front, which sets the tone for a narrow, quietly serious fine-dining room on Christopher Street. The chef's Taiwanese heritage and Queens upbringing shape a seasonal New American menu sourced from local farms, and the kitchen has a light touch that lets produce do the talking. Bring someone you actually want to have a conversation with; the room is that intimate.

    The awards

  46. An L-shaped counter wraps around the chef at this modest sushiya in SoHo, where an omakase at a price that won't require a sit-down conversation with your accountant moves through a long parade of nigiri and small courses. The kitchen leans classic, with the occasional flourish, caviar on shima-aji, say, landing without fanfare. The mango sorbet at the end beats the green tea ice cream every time, but nobody told you that.

    The awards

  47. A cozy vintage tavern on a quiet West Village side street, The Commerce Inn does the American canon with a light touch: potted shrimp, roasted and grilled things, and a ribeye that arrives buried under a drift of fried onion rings. The patty melt earned a spot on the New York Times's top dishes list, which tells you something. Linen tables, wooden floors, and servers who seem genuinely glad you showed up.

  55. Rank 62. Little Branch

Corrugated iron ceiling, pressed tin bar front, mustard walls: Little Branch looks like a speakeasy that forgot to close. This Greenwich Village cocktail bar carries the DNA of Milk & Honey, the late Sasha Petraske's legendary first act, which means classically made drinks taken seriously and a room that rewards staying a while. 61. A multi-roaster coffee shop tucked into an airy high-rise lobby near the Holland Tunnel, which is not a sentence you expect to lead somewhere good, but here we are. The shelves rotate through a rotating cast of specialty roasters, the menu stays short and efficient, and the lobby has enough room to spread out, plug in, and stay far longer than you planned. Good pastries, no guilt about the outlet use.

  62. The restaurant attached to Hauser & Wirth's Soho gallery, Manuela runs lunch, dinner, and brunch inside an interior wild enough to distract you from the menu. The original location in Los Angeles keeps live chickens on the premises; New York wisely does not. The all-day menu leans Mediterranean-ish, crudo and carpaccio giving way to grilled fish and roasted lamb, the kind of food that photographs well and also tastes like food.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
