The Top 100 Places to Eat Near Four Seasons San Diego

  1. Rank 1. Callie

    Mediterranean

A lively Mediterranean spot in East Village where the food punches well above its price point, thanks to a chef who put in serious time in Daniel Boulud's kitchens before coming home to San Diego. The room is loud and social, built for sharing plates, and the crowd leans local and in-the-know. Vegetables and seafood do the heavy lifting, with spice and citrus doing their best work alongside them. Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  5. Taquerias are everywhere in San Diego, but this East Village spot has a Michelin Bib Gourmand and genuinely earns it. It's a high-ceilinged, concrete-floored kind of place with a full bar, so it skews younger and louder than your average taco stand. The tortillas are made fresh all day and the fillings are worth the trip. Save room for the churros, which are exactly as good as you hope they'll be.

  6. Rank 6. Kingfisher

    Vietnamese

Vietnamese cooking done with real finesse, inside a cocktail bar that actually earns the "elegant" label. The central bar is the room's centerpiece, and the cocktails are inventive enough to hold their own against the food, which leans modern without losing the bright, herbaceous soul of the cuisine. It draws the kind of crowd that shows up dressed well and orders another round. Michelin noticed, which tracks.

  7. This Little Italy brunch spot has a Bib Gourmand and a champagne vending machine, which about sums up its whole deal. The pink marble and plush booths read Instagram-bait until you notice the skulls tucked into the decor, and suddenly it makes more sense. Fluffy soufflé pancakes and a potato gratin drowning in sausage gravy are the moves here. There's always a wait, so show up with a plan and low blood sugar.

  8. Rank 8. Herb & Wood

    Wood-fired New American

A wood-fired New American spot in Little Italy that somehow makes a converted warehouse feel like a cozy Parisian loft, which is a neat trick. The vaulted ceilings and moody lighting draw a stylish crowd that's there to actually eat well, not just be seen. The menu roams from blistered pizzas and grilled mushrooms to polenta dishes that feel genuinely considered. Save room for the chocolate-whiskey cake.

  9. A sibling-run Thai restaurant in East Village that focuses on the Isaan region of northeastern Thailand, so expect bolder, funkier flavors than the usual pad thai crowd-pleasers. The menu is short and deliberate, which means the kitchen actually cares about what ends up on your table. Order cold beer, share everything, and go with whatever sounds most unfamiliar to you. You won't regret it.

  10. Rank 10. Craft & Commerce

    Contemporary New American

Part gastropub, part hunting lodge fever dream, Craft & Commerce is the kind of bar where the taxidermy is on loan from the Natural History Museum and the cocktails are genuinely good. The crowd leans stylish and loud, the kind of people who say they're just stopping for one drink. The kitchen does hearty comfort food with Asian leanings, and it all holds up surprisingly well against the decor competing for your attention.

  11. Tuxedo jackets and Converse sneakers say everything you need to know about this upscale steakhouse in Little Italy. The room is mid-century art deco dressed with black-and-white portraits of rap legends, and waiters push tableside carts like it's still 1962, but cooler. Steaks are the reason you're here, and they're impeccably done. There's also a rooftop bar if you need convincing to stay longer, which you will.

  12. Old-school rap, graffiti on the walls, and two faux-cherry trees framing the bar: Cloak & Petal doesn't look like any Japanese restaurant you've been to before. It's a lively, share-everything kind of spot in Little Italy where the crowd leans young and social, and nobody's being precious about it. Order widely, because the menu rewards that approach, and the sashimi alone is reason enough to show up.

Juniper & Ivy is a lively California restaurant doing creative New American cooking in a converted warehouse in Little Italy, which sounds like a cliche until you actually eat there. The crowd skews young and good-looking, the bar is always buzzing, and the vibe is loud enough that you can relax.

  16. Tucked inside Balboa Park's Mingei museum, this cafe-style restaurant is genuinely good enough to visit without pretending you're there for the folk art. The menu bounces around the globe in a way that actually works, and the plant-based options are real food, not an apology. The crowd is a mix of museum regulars and people who stumbled in and stayed longer than planned. Low-key, reasonably priced, and a solid reason to linger.

  17. Rank 17. Cucina Urbana

    California Italian

Casual California-Italian with a Bib Gourmand nod, and the kind of neighborhood spot where locals pack every table on a Tuesday like it's a Saturday night. The brick oven pizzas lean playful and the fresh pasta is reliably good. The real move, though, is the wine, sold at retail price with a small corkage fee, which is basically cheating in the best way possible.

  89. Rank 89. NINE-TEN

    Caribbean

Tucked inside La Jolla's old Grande Colonial Hotel, Nine-Ten is an elegant but unstuffy restaurant where the crowd leans beachy and the sunglasses stay on through dinner. Caribbean flavors do a lot of heavy lifting here, and the pastry program is genuinely worth saving room for. At dinner you can hand control to the chef and just see what happens, which is either liberating or terrifying depending on how your day went.

  94. The case for crossing the border is strong when a place like this is waiting on the other side. Mision 19 is a polished, modern Mexican restaurant in Zona Río doing avant-garde Baja cooking with an obsessive local sourcing ethos, nothing on the plate traveled more than 200 kilometers to get there. The crowd is Tijuana's creative class, dressed sharp and drinking Valle de Guadalupe wine like it's their job, which for some of them it probably is.

  95. Corn gets serious treatment here: sourced from small family farms, nixtamalized, and ground in-house before landing on the comal as tortillas for tacos and tostadas. It's a relaxed, airy Tijuana dining room where the menu is short and the craft is not. The daily tamal wrapped in banana leaf is worth building your order around. Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand, which means great cooking without the bill that makes you do math on the way home.

  96. A Michelin-selected spot in Del Mar that pulls off elegant without trying too hard, which is harder than it sounds. The menu swings confidently between European and Asian influences, and the sushi draws regulars who never bother looking at the rest of the menu, which would be their loss. The parking lot is full of very nice cars, and the crowd dresses accordingly, but nobody's being precious about it. Great for a date or any excuse to spend a little.
