Rank 2. Causa
Nikkei Peruvian
A tucked-away tasting menu for about 20 people in Blagden Alley, Causa fuses Japanese technique with Peruvian ingredients in a cuisine called Nikkei. The chef structures the meal as a journey from Lima's coast up through the Andes to the Amazon, so the menu moves with a logic you feel before you understand it. It holds a Michelin star and a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic. Bring someone you want to impress, or just go alone and take notes.

A glass-and-marble box that practically dares the sky to blink first, Imperfecto is a modernist Latin American fine dining room where the counter seats directly under the chef's station feel like a restaurant folded inside another one. The menu works through Latin flavors with precise, elaborate technique, and a Michelin star backs the ambition. Bring patience, an appetite, and someone worth sitting across from for a long evening.

Rank 4. Casa Teresa
Spanish
The oak-and-charcoal grill doing steady work on Ibérico pork and whole fish is a reasonable argument for why this Spanish restaurant inside a food hall draws a serious crowd. The chef, an alum of José Andrés's Minibar, runs the room with a light touch: tapas at the bar, big shared platters for the table, and a Basque cheesecake that regulars treat as non-negotiable. The patio helps on good days.

Contemporary New American
A moss wall and a foie gras "negroni" topped with Campari gelée tell you pretty quickly that this is not a low-key bistro. Ryan Ratino's contemporary New American spot on 14th Street holds a Michelin star and earns it with cooking that is quietly surreal without being smug about it. American
The wood-fired hearth in the open kitchen sets the mood before anything arrives at the table. This fine dining room in a Shaw alley does Mid-Atlantic cooking with a Southern undertow, and the chef's commitment to the region shows in everything from rooftop herbs to the catfish slider that's been on the menu since forever. A Michelin star keeps company with crowds who dress up but aren't stiff about it.

American
A nine-course vegetable tasting menu in Shaw where the chef holds a James Beard Award and a Michelin star, and still manages to make a beet taste like pastrami. Rob Rubba's kitchen treats local farms as the whole point, not a selling line, and the results are the kind of thing that makes omnivores quietly reconsider their priorities. The bread alone, enriched with "garleeks" and served with sunflower-marigold butter, gets talked about for days afterward.

Rank 9. Anju
Korean
The name says it all: "anju" means Korean food made to go with a drink, and this gastropub on 18th Street takes that premise seriously, with soju, makgeolli, and beer running alongside a menu of fried snacks, rich stews, and banchan. Brick walls, wood floors, and a bit of funky art make it feel like a neighborhood spot that happens to be packed every night. The chef is a James Beard nominee, and the cooking has a mom's-kitchen warmth that earns that comparison without being sentimental.

American, Japanese
A dessert counter that ends with a treasure box of mignardises tells you something about the ambitions here. Jônt is a counter-seating tasting menu restaurant above Bresca, where Ryan Ratino runs an American-Japanese kitchen earning two Michelin stars. Sharp-suited servers and laser-focused chefs work in close quarters while a high-energy playlist keeps the room from tipping into reverence. Mexican
Corn sourced from Oaxaca and nixtamalized in-house gives you a sense of how seriously this upscale-casual Mexican restaurant in Dupont Circle takes its sourcing. The menu covers raw bar, sopecitos, and mains like halibut with mole, plus sides that quietly steal scenes. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, it started as a pop-up, which might explain why the cooking still has a point to prove. The papaya dessert alone earns its real estate on the menu.

Olive trees planted between the tables are doing a lot of heavy lifting, but this roomy Greek restaurant on N Street sells the Aegean fantasy well enough that you forget you're in Dupont Circle. Baklava with iced Greek yogurt closes things out the only sensible way.

Rank 15. Shōtō
Modern Japanese
A volcanic stone installation cascades from the ceiling of this sleek modern Japanese restaurant in Midtown Center, where the lighting is calibrated precisely enough to make everyone look good. The kind of room that reads more New York than D.C., which the crowd seems to know.

Indian
The dining room is dressed up like a British Raj club, which is exactly the kind of setting that makes sense a few blocks from the White House. This is traditional Indian fine dining where politicians have been settling into the half-moon banquettes for decades, and the polished cooking moves across the subcontinent, from northern grilled meats to southern coconut-laced seafood. French
Midnight-blue walls, gold accents, and a Persian rug that has no business being this plush set the mood at Apéro, a French restaurant on P Street where champagne and caviar are essentially the whole thesis. A Caribbean restaurant named for the Port of Spain district that inspired it, St. James turns shared plates into a convivial argument for Trinidadian cooking. The space is modern and industrial with splashes of color, and the drinks lean hard on rum. The jerk brisket marinates for twelve hours before hitting the smoker, and the macaroni pie has developed a following of its own. Rank 35. Mita
Vegetarian Peruvian
Plant-based Peruvian tasting menus in Shaw sounds like a premise that requires a disclaimer, yet Mita holds a Michelin star and a James Beard nomination for Best New Restaurant. Japanese
The rooftop draws Adams Morgan brunch-seekers, but the real reason to come is Masako Morishita's Japanese comfort food, which won her a 2024 James Beard Award for Emerging Chef. Peter Chang's Dupont Circle restaurant is a sleek, minimalist Chinese dining room that takes its visual cues seriously. American Italian
The name says it all: this is red-sauce nostalgia with decent sourcing behind it, an Italian-American restaurant where the menu reads like a Sunday supper at someone's grandmother's house, if grandma had a full bar and a buzzy crowd to match. Clams casino, chicken Vesuvio, and macaroni in garlic cream all show up. The pizza selection wanders usefully off-script too. Relaxed, loud, and unapologetically carb-forward.

Eric Adjepong's Ghanaian restaurant spreads across multiple floors, each with its own look, all of them full on a weeknight. You can do a tasting menu or graze from the à la carte bar menu, a riff on Ghana's casual chop-bar tradition. Penn Quarter's modern Indian restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand by taking traditional regional cooking seriously, then quietly upgrading it, naan by naan. Seafood
Bottles of Old Bay and malt vinegar already on the table tell you exactly where you stand at this lively, casual seafood bar in Dupont Circle. Sushi
The omakase counter seats just two parties a night, each with a dedicated chef and a spread of peak-season seafood arranged in lacquered boxes you pick from yourself. It's a full Japanese restaurant in Dupont Circle that runs from handmade udon to grilled black cod, but the nigiri is the point, along with a specials list that turns up geoduck and cod milt when the season cooperates.

Brazilian
Caipirinhas built from fresh sugar-cane juice anchor this small Brazilian bar and kitchen in Adams Morgan, where a vinyl soundtrack keeps the room at a low simmer all night. The open kitchen sends out charcoal-oven dishes and fried tapioca squares with spicy guava sauce that Washingtonian singled out as a favorite dish of the year. A James Beard semifinalist for Best New Bar, it draws the kind of crowd that skips the menu on the second visit.

Rank 93. Seven Reasons
Caribbean
The bi-level dining room turns heads before a plate arrives, all warm light and an open kitchen pulling focus. Seven Reasons is a contemporary Caribbean restaurant drawing from Venezuela, Peru, and the islands, with portions generous enough to make a point. The cooking leans bold and colorful, the kind of place where a dessert list actually earns your attention. A James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic.

Rank 94. The Saga
Spanish
Enrique Limardo of Imperfecto keeps the room deliberately calm, all cream, beige, and light wood inside the Ritz-Carlton, so the Spanish-meets-Latin-American food has nowhere to hide. Tapas and small plates anchor the menu, with a whole section devoted to rice dishes, including a pink beet-stained arroz tucked with roasted vegetables and fava beans that earns its page. Mains run meat-forward and come sized for the table.

Rank 95. Oyamel
Mexican
José Andrés's colorful Mexican restaurant near the Mall earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand on the strength of regionally inflected cooking: black bean soup with avocado leaves and crema, chilaquiles with real crunch, quesadillas on housemade tortillas. The ceviche bar is the move if you want a seat with a show. Mezcal and tequila cocktails are taken seriously, and guacamole arrives unfinished, mixed tableside to your specification.

Levantine
A wood-burning oven anchors this fast-casual Levantine cafe in Georgetown, where the line out the door reorganizes itself around whatever Michael Rafidi's team pulled from it most recently. Mornings run on pastries and shakshuka; afternoons shift to stuffed pitas and batata tots with urfa sauce. By night it flips to table service and a dinner menu. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

Rank 100. Dōgon by Kwame Onwuachi
Afro-Caribbean
A chain-link curtain separates the Salamander hotel lobby from Kwame Onwuachi's Afro-Caribbean restaurant, which pulls from his Nigerian, Jamaican, Trinidadian, and Creole roots. The menu is built for sharing, with hoe crab served in the shell alongside plantain cakes, and a crispy lamb bowl that nods to Ben's Chili Bowl. It landed on North America's 50 Best Restaurants list, and the room fills like it knows.
