  1. Rank 82. Nunù Trattoria Moderna

    Modern Campanian Trattoria

  3. A table for two on a small terrace right at the canal is the opening argument here. This elegant trattoria in San Polo keeps its cooking rooted in Venice, which in season means fried moleche, the soft-shell crabs that appear briefly and disappear before you've planned a second trip. The wine cellar runs to around 800 labels, with a grappa and cognac selection that suggests nobody is in a hurry to leave.

  4. Rank 82. Osteria del Teatro

    Traditional Trattoria

A 16th-century dining room with a fireplace sets the tone at this Tuscan osteria in the hill town of Cortona, where the cooking stays close to local tradition and whatever the season is offering. Theatrical decor runs through every room, from the formal to the trattoria-style. A small terrace looks onto the pedestrian street, and the few tables out there go fast, so book ahead if eating outdoors matters to you.

  10. The sfogline roll fresh pasta right in front of you, and the extra lengths go straight to the adjoining shop. This Bologna trattoria keeps one foot planted in the old school, with Sunday lasagne alla bolognese made the way your nonna's nonna would recognize, and one foot pointed forward in lighter, more contemporary preparations. A heated winter terrace means there's always an excuse to linger longer than planned.

  11. Rank 82. Trattoria del Bollito

    Piedmontese Trattoria

Wood-panelled walls and staff who seem genuinely pleased to see you set the tone at this old-school trattoria in central Alba. The kitchen stays firmly rooted in Piedmontese tradition, and the wine list reads like a love letter to the Langhe. Tajarin with rabbit and hazelnuts is the dish regulars tend to order without looking up. It's exactly the kind of place you hope exists when you arrive in truffle country.

  12. On the uphill road to the Palazzo Farnese, this old-school family trattoria in Caprarola has been turning out northern Lazio cooking for five generations, and the kitchen cooks like it plans to go five more. The food is rooted in Tuscia, with some Tuscan drift, and the wine list runs to around 900 labels, many available by the glass, managed by the cook's son after a stint in fancier rooms abroad.

  15. Grandmother Erminia's recipes still run the kitchen at this family trattoria tucked into the hills above Felino, in the Parma countryside. The Leoni family has been doing regional Emilian cooking the old-school way for generations, salame aged in their own cellar, rabbit alla cacciatora boned and slow-cooked into something that makes you understand why this corner of Italy has such a high opinion of itself.

  17. Tortellini in Parmigiano cream and bollito misto are the kind of dishes that remind you why Emilian cooking has a reputation to defend. This is an old-school trattoria doing the regional classics without modernizing the soul out of them: fresh egg pastas, cotechino with stewed beans, and the celebrated zuppa inglese to finish. When the weather cooperates, tables spill into the intimate Piazza della Pomposa, and the meal gets considerably harder to leave.

  18. A fireplace warms the main room of this old-school Tuscan trattoria in the stone village of San Quirico d'Orcia, with a pergola garden out back for warmer months. The cooking is rooted deep in the territory: hand-rolled pasta, truffle, meats and game, the kind of menu that doesn't need to explain itself. A wine list heavy on local labels keeps the whole thing honest.

  19. Rank 119. Ristorante Rocco

    Roman Trattoria

Rocco is a Roman trattoria with starched tablecloths and polished terrazzo floors, though nobody's stiff about any of it. The menu lives on a chalkboard in elegant cursive and gets rewritten daily, and the cacio e pepe shows up with spaghetti cooked exactly as long as it should be. There's one dinner seating, and the room is the kind where a former president or a film director might be at the next table, eating like a regular.

  20. Rank 120. Buca Dell’Orafo

    Florentine Trattoria

A basement wine cellar a stone's throw from the Ponte Vecchio, Buca Dell'Orafo is one of the last old-school trattorias holding down the historic center. The menu reads like a Florentine time capsule: ribollita, panzanella, bistecca, braised veal in tomato sauce. Service can be uneven, but the room has the kind of unhurried, candlelit gravity that makes you order another glass and stop worrying about it.

  22. You have to ring a doorbell to get in, which sets the tone nicely for this old-school Roman trattoria near Campo dei Fiori. The team behind Cesare al Casaletto took over after the beloved predecessor closed, keeping the tiled floors, midcentury furniture, and a tight menu that still features the previous owner's pan-fried meatballs. It's the kind of place that resists the urge to reinvent itself, which is exactly the point.

  23. Prosciutto legs hang from the ceiling, straw-wrapped chianti bottles line the shelves, and waiters holler across the room like they're doing you a personal favor. La Vecchia Bettola is an old-school Florentine trattoria where the name means exactly what it says: old tavern. The Tuscan repertoire runs deep, and locals fill the place for the bistecca alla fiorentina and fried artichokes. Prices stay honest, the room stays loud, and nobody pretends otherwise.

  24. Rank 120. Sora Lella

    Roman Trattoria

A trattoria wedged into a medieval tower on Tiber Island, which is already a strong opening move. Sora Lella has been turning out cucina romana since forever, and the third generation has quietly sharpened things back up after a long, comfortable coasting phase. The wine list skips the obvious and leans into Lazio's overlooked labels. Wood-paneled rooms, cacio e pepe somewhere on the menu, and the kind of crowd that didn't need a reservation app to find this place.

  25. Inside the Sant'Ambrogio market, this old-school family trattoria runs on seasonal plates, dirt-cheap prices, and staff who holler across the room like nobody's watching. Florence is busy reinventing itself as a serious dining destination, but Trattoria da Rocco has not gotten the memo, and that is entirely the point. Go before one o'clock or squeeze into a small booth with the crowd and order whatever is on that day.

  26. Rank 120. Trattoria Mario

    Tuscan Trattoria

Communal tables, no reservations, and a menu that shrinks as the morning goes on: Trattoria Mario is an old-school Florentine lunch spot near Mercato Centrale that fills fast with locals and tourists making peace with each other over Tuscan bean soup and bistecca alla fiorentina. The vegetables are, by tradition, cooked into submission, but nobody comes here for that. Come early, order the pasta with ragu, and accept that the best things will be gone by noon.

  27. Rank 120. Trattoria Mirta

    Northern Trattoria

  28. Rank 120. Trattoria Monti

    Marchigian Trattoria

  29. The décor stopped updating sometime in the 1970s and has sensibly stayed put ever since. This is an old-school neighborhood trattoria in the Oltrarno, the kind locals call a blast from the past without meaning it as a criticism. The kitchen turns out honest Tuscan fare: pici, roast pork, and a spaghetti alla carrettiera built on a dense, chile-spiked red sauce with anchovies and breadcrumbs. It sits just past Porta Romana, which is a short walk from the chaos you probably want a break from anyway.

  30. Rank 120. Trattoria Sergio Gozzi

    Florentine Trattoria

An old-school Florentine trattoria tucked beside San Lorenzo market, Sergio Gozzi has been feeding the neighborhood forever with the kind of menu that shifts by season rather than trend. The fried zucchini flowers give way to artichokes come winter, and the peposo, beef slow-cooked in wine and whole peppercorns, is the sort of thing you order without looking up. More breathing room than the usual San Lorenzo scramble.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
