Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Okuchichibu mountains from every room, which is the whole argument for making the trip from Tokyo. This intimate mountain resort from the Hiramatsu group keeps the room count deliberately low, so the hot-spring baths and the views stay uncrowded. Multiple lounges invite a hi-fi listening session or an afternoon with an art book while the seasons shift outside. The Michelin Guide has awarded it 2 Keys.

The name translates loosely as "to sit and forget in the woods," and Zaborin makes that a design brief, not just a name. This modern ryokan in the Hanazono Forest sets 15 private villas into the Hokkaido landscape, each with its own indoor and outdoor onsen baths. The architecture is spare and contemplative, the kaiseki dinners are elaborate, and the general expectation is that you will not be in a hurry. It holds two Michelin Keys.

A classic Japanese garden sits at the center of this boutique hotel in Okazaki, the quietly green northeastern corner of a city that doesn't always do quiet. The architecture reads as contemporary, but Higashiyama culture runs through every material and detail. The restaurant leans French in the tradition of Japanese French cuisine, which is its own very particular and elegant thing. A calm, considered place to stay when Kyoto's charms start to feel like a crowd.

Moxy Kyoto lands in one of the world's most historically loaded cities and responds with DJ sets and fifty-inch televisions, which takes a certain confidence. The hotel's playful design actually pays attention to its surroundings, with artwork and interiors that quietly nod to Kyoto without cosplaying a ryokan. Rates stay on the affordable side, and the casual all-day bar and restaurant keeps things easy. A Michelin Selected Hotel.

Caption by Hyatt's first Japan outpost landed in Namba, Osaka's loudest, most neon-soaked neighborhood, and the fit is deliberate. This lifestyle hotel skips the front-desk ritual in favor of online check-in, and the ground floor runs as a café and co-working space for guests and locals alike. Rooms have murals above the beds, furniture built from repurposed materials, and picture windows onto the street theater below, which in Namba is never dull.

The name stands for "Design, Development, and Destination," which tells you exactly how seriously this place takes itself, in a good way. A luxury hotel tucked inside a plain brick tower in Nihonbashi, it runs on contemporary minimalism, with an in-house art gallery showing rotating works when you need something stronger than the minibar. Nol, the restaurant, does modern French. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

Walled and gated on the edge of Nara Park, where the city quietly surrenders to Mount Kasuga's forests, Shisui is a luxury hotel that wears a historically minded face over clean-lined, contemporary interiors. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the rooms look onto private gardens, and the on-site restaurant pays serious attention to local Nara cuisine. The deer that wander in from the park are unaffiliated with the hotel but do not charge extra.

A wall of 2,000-plus books, curated for their ties to Kyoto, cascades down the lobby staircase of this modern minimalist boutique hotel in Shimogyo. The rooms are compact and deliberately spare, with a shared kitchen rather than room service, which tells you the target guest. Numabooks picked the library, a café sits at the bottom of the shelves, and the whole thing reads less like a hotel than a very well-appointed reading retreat.

A former imperial family residence in a quiet Kyoto neighborhood, Yoshida Sanso is a traditional ryokan that earns its hush the moment you pass through the gate. Nine rooms are formally designated for wellness routines, which tells you a lot about what this hotel is going for. A luxury high-rise in Takanawa Gateway City, it occupies the upper floors of a new tower, with interiors by Yabu Pushelberg that borrow from Zen gardens and traditional Japanese landscapes. Dining runs from omakase sushi to Mediterranean, and a croissant bar keeps the lobby lounge from taking itself too seriously. Haneda is close, the city views are high, and the vibe is deliberately calm.

The old warehouse still stands on the lot, but the rest is strikingly contemporary, with a proper kitchen and a futuristic shower upstairs. Rooms open onto a courtyard of manicured maple and moss, best appreciated from the personal soaking tub. Two Western bedrooms and two tatami rooms give the group options for how traditional they want their morning to feel.

Everything in the rooms, from the textiles to the ceramics, was sourced from local artisans and much of it is for sale, which makes the whole stay feel like a very comfortable shop. This boutique hotel in Asakusa leans into youthful energy where Tokyo's lodging scene usually leans into altitude and marble. Rooms are private and traditional in style, some with bunk beds for groups, and the on-site restaurant draws neighborhood regulars alongside guests.

Floors 38 through 57 of Japan's tallest building, the Abeno Harukas, with floor-to-ceiling windows in every one of the 360 rooms, and a corner room that frankly makes the case for itself. This boutique hotel threads a mid-century renovation through the ryokan tradition, keeping the onsen baths and the careful, unhurried attention that goes with them. The restaurant folds French technique into Japanese flavors while sharing the same sweeping panorama. Deer may or may not wander past; Nara being Nara, probably yes.

Public baths on the top floor look out over Sapporo's skyline, which sets the tone for this design-forward business hotel in the middle of the city. Rooms come in three color schemes named urban, natural, and hip, and all have rain showers and French press coffee makers. A restaurant pairs French technique with Japanese dishes, and a second-floor bar handles cocktails. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

The Club InterContinental floor sits at the top with private-label champagne on permanent tap, which sets the tone for the whole hotel. This luxury property in the Lilac Square complex takes the upper floors, and 149 rooms look out over parkland and Sapporo's river corridor. A heated pool runs twenty meters on the ninth level, and the Norva Lounge splits into fire and forest sections, because subtlety only goes so far.

A former art gallery on the edge of Kanazawa's central park, Korinkyo converted the bones rather than hiding them, so the high-arched windows and industrial frame still read exactly as they did. It's a minimalist boutique hotel now, with pale beige-and-gray rooms, exposed beams, and curving walls. Teacups and bathrobes were made by local artisans, and the air carries a faint scent from an on-site distillery. Rooftop cypress baths overlook the treetops.

The ground floor is wrapped in loose-crossing timber, and everything inside, down to the staff uniforms, was designed by architect Kengo Kuma. This boutique hotel sits in Oshiage, in the shadow of the Tokyo Skytree, a few train stops east of the center. Rooms run from compact Studios to Library suites. The lobby café doubles as an all-day bar, and the rooftop terrace offers a close-up of the tower that no postcard has quite managed.

Four houseboats moored on a canal in Tennozu, Tokyo's arts district, make up this small hotel, and no two look remotely alike from the water. The neighborhood, built up by the same group behind the hotel, handles dining. A Michelin Selected Hotel.

The headboards are hand-printed Kyo-Karakami paper, which tells you something about where the budget went in these minimalist suites. A design-forward aparthotel near Toji Temple and Kyoto Station, it pairs classical Japanese lattice and craft details with clean modernist lines. Rooms come with kitchenettes, dining tables, and washer-dryers, and a bento breakfast arrives at your door, which makes roughing it feel surprisingly civilized.

A ryokan in the mountains of Ishikawa Prefecture where someone has thought carefully about how shadows fall on a wall when light filters through a bamboo screen. The kitchen follows the seasons closely, drawing from both mountain and coast. It holds a Michelin Key.

Every room at this modernist ryokan in Ishikawa's Yamashiro Onsen comes with its own private outdoor hot spring bath, which sets a fairly high floor for what counts as a quiet evening. A Lawrence Weiner mural runs across the facade of this design hotel in Maebashi, which tells you immediately what kind of stay this is. Architect Sou Fujimoto transformed a 1970s concrete block into something closer to a contemporary art museum with rooms, including a Leandro Erlich installation filling the atrium. A newer green tower shaped after the nearby mountains is its own sculpture. The founder of Japanese eyewear brand JINS envisioned it as a living room for the whole city.

Perched on a hill above Fukuoka with greenery on all sides, this small luxury hotel is essentially a ryokan wearing a hotel's clothes. The 46 rooms range from tatami-style traditional to Japanese modernist, all feeling more like secluded inn rooms than city-hotel standard-issue. A hot spring, a spa, and a kaiseki restaurant fill out the picture. Fukuoka sits low on most Western itineraries, which means the crowds here are manageable.

Marriott's answer to the boutique hotel moment, the Moxy pitches itself as the hip, budget-friendly option Tokyo has long been short on. The theme is "Edo Pop," and it commits: graphic art and color saturate the public spaces, while rooms stay compact but cleverly organized, with storage out in the open because nobody uses a wardrobe. A ground-floor bar, lounge, and noodle station run around the clock, so there's no awkward hour.

Sixteen rooms is not many, but that's the whole point at this boutique hotel a short walk from Hakata Station. Designer Ryu Kosaka, also behind the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo, keeps the look warm but uncluttered. Ten rooms, each with its own hot spring bath open to the garden, in a hotel where the architecture can't quite decide between shoin, sukiya, and Spanish Revival, and somehow pulls it off. The public onsen runs on sulfate-heavy water for exfoliation, while the in-room baths draw from a separate chloride-rich spring for moisture, and yes, the distinction matters. Unplugging here is less a lifestyle choice than an inevitability.

Setsu Niseko sits slope-side in Niseko, where the powder snow has made Japan's ski scene impossible to ignore. This 190-room hotel runs from studios to four-bedroom suites, all finished in a mix of contemporary architecture and traditional Japanese craft that feels surprisingly polished for somewhere you arrive in ski boots. An onsen, spa, and five restaurants round out the stay, and it holds a Michelin Key.

Old wooden farmhouses were dismantled, carried to a quiet valley outside Niseko, and rebuilt without a single nail, the hand-carved beams locked together the way they were centuries ago. The five cottages at this design hotel each carry a Japanese elemental name and house pieces from the owner's personal art collection, private onsen baths, and curated libraries. A wood-lined spa, mountain-view restaurant, and Hokkaido wines round it out. One Michelin Key.

A centuries-old snow-country house hiding Arne Jacobsen Swan chairs and Tendo Mokko furniture inside is a particular kind of confidence. This small inn, a Michelin Key holder, divides its rooms across the main house and an old storehouse, each fitted with a private open-air bath fed by local hot springs and tended by dedicated attendants. The Nordic-meets-Japanese minimalism is as calm as the setting, which is saying something.

Nine rooms in the Nara countryside, with a French kitchen that treats local ingredients as the actual point rather than the local color. The chef applies classical technique to Yamato produce chosen as much for its wellness properties as its flavor, which is either very Japanese or very ahead of itself, possibly both. Rooms lean European in feel, breakfast is for guests only, and Osaka is close enough that you don't have to explain the detour.

A Nagano valley ryokan whose name translates as "wind through the trees in the mountains," which tells you exactly the kind of stay they're selling. The main draw is a series of baths, indoor, outdoor, communal, and private, that the region has been perfecting for centuries.
