Kinds of places

Cuisines

  1. Phang Nga Bay places the limestone karsts right outside your villa, which helps explain why fifty-six thatched-roof bungalows on Yao Noi fill up faster than the more obvious choices nearby. This luxury resort pairs the traditional exterior with contemporary interiors and private infinity pools, and the Six Senses Spa runs with the quiet efficiency of a place that knows its therapists matter more than its philosophy. Getting here involves a boat, which is the point. Michelin awarded it 2 Keys.

  2. Nested at the foot of Doi Suthep Mountain inside Chiang Mai's city limits, this boutique resort manages to feel genuinely removed from everything, thanks to a compound layout dense with greenery. Rooms are contemporary with balconies; villas add private plunge pools. The spa pavilion drives much of the draw, with personalized programs folding in sound therapy, yoga, and massage. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  3. The crab omelet here has its own fan club, which is saying something in a city where every block has a contender. Krua Apsorn is a no-frills Thai restaurant on Sam Sen Road, the kind of place that fits naturally into a slow afternoon walk through Dusit's quieter streets. The Michelin Bib Gourmand points at what the kitchen does: serious, affordable Thai food without any performance around it.

  4. Rank 103. Maan Muang

    Northern Thai

An open-air eatery in suburban Bangkok that takes Northern Thai cooking seriously enough to make the commute feel reasonable. The kitchen holds to recipes from Lampang, so the gang hang lay has the slow, dark depth it should, and the sai oua tastes like it came from somewhere much farther north. The Michelin Bib Gourmand is on record here, and the crowd driving out from the city center makes its own argument.

  5. Kanom jeen sao nam, rice vermicelli in fresh coconut milk, is reason enough to find this Thai restaurant on Pradipat Road, where the air conditioning is a bonus and the Michelin Bib Gourmand is a given. The kitchen grew out of a Chatuchak Weekend Market stall, and the five-spice pork belly stew still tastes like it has something to prove. The neighborhood rewards the wander, full of low-key cafes that won't make the guidebooks.

  6. Rank 103. Samlor

    Thai

A tricycle hangs outside this cozy corner Thai restaurant on Charoen Krung, which is about as good a sign as any that the place has a personality. The open kitchen turns out street food-inspired Thai cooking with a little more intention behind it, and the omelette has a cult following for good reason. Distressed walls, a loft-y feel, and a Michelin Bib Gourmand make it the kind of spot where you'll want to ask what the catch of the day is.

  7. Fifty-three of the villas here have their own private pools, and the higher-end ones are big enough to actually swim laps. This beachfront resort sits on the relatively calm Choeng Mon beach, with a spa, gym, two shared beachfront pools, and a surprisingly serious wine cellar on hand. Chaweng's noise is only minutes away if you need it, but the Michelin Guide awarded two Keys to the version that mostly ignores it.

  8. The pixelated cutaway spiraling up the King Power Mahanakhon tower is hard to miss from anywhere in Bangkok, and The Standard occupies its lower floors with 155 rooms designed by Hayon Studio in a style that reads as genuinely cosmopolitan. Rooms are stylish without tipping into excess, because the extravagance is clearly being saved for the rooftop: a Mexican bar and restaurant sits on the 76th floor, which is a commitment to a theme.

  9. Hillside villas on Koh Samui's quieter north coast, set just high enough above the beach that the views do most of the decorating. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys. Interiors lean into comfort over design statement, with deep soaking tubs and enough daybeds to lose an afternoon. The spa runs the full range from classic treatments to open-air massage. Two restaurants, two bars, and a 24-hour infinity pool ensure the beach never feels obligatory.

  10. Thatched villas disappear into the jungle canopy on Koh Samui's quieter northern tip, which is the whole point. This eco-luxe resort trades the Chaweng crowd for steep hillside privacy, with private pools, a gulf-facing infinity pool, and an oceanside fine dining restaurant doing their best to keep you from ever leaving. The spa helps with that too. Honeymooners and the quietly famous tend to find their way here.

  11. On the bank of the Ping River, about twenty minutes north of Chiang Mai, this Michelin Key resort was built as Thailand's first artisanal property, with local craftspeople shaping nearly every detail. There's no off-the-shelf boutique aesthetic here; the rooms, gardens, spa, and tea terrace feel genuinely site-specific. The whole thing is styled as a throwback to when travel felt like an occasion, which is either romantic or gently ironic depending on your mood.

    The awards

  12. Every suite and villa at this high-end Phuket resort comes with its own private infinity pool overlooking the sea. The property sits on a rare private beach along the northwestern coast, with pavilion-style accommodations tucked into tropical foliage and spaced far enough apart that you'd never guess anyone else was staying there. A saltwater pool, spa, yacht charters, and a Michelin-starred restaurant round things out for guests who never quite get around to leaving.

  13. Eighty-eight private-pool villas tucked into the hills above a secluded inlet, well clear of Koh Samui's more notorious beachfront chaos. This resort holds 2 Michelin Keys and leans into the full Banyan Tree playbook: dark woods, rain showers, sliding glass doors, and views that make it hard to leave your villa for the spa, the Thai restaurant, or the seafood grill below.

    The awards

  14. An ancient ficus tree anchors the grounds of this adults-only beachfront boutique resort in Khao Lak, where a long white-sand beach meets a lagoon on the opposite side. The Michelin Guide awarded it two Keys. Rooms are built from local materials that settle into the landscape rather than compete with it, and the spa sits among mangroves in open-air pavilions facing the sea. Yacht trips, canoe safaris, and jungle treks fill out the days for those who'd rather not stay horizontal.

    The awards

  15. Every villa and suite here comes with its own private pool, which tells you the register Banyan Tree Krabi is operating in before you've even seen the limestone karsts looming over Tab Kaek Beach. It's a full-scale resort with a spa complex, The Rainforest, built around hydrotherapy circuits, and two restaurants perched on the hillside with views that make you forget what you ordered. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys.

  34. An open-air Thai restaurant ringed by its own garden of papaya, tamarind, and fresh herbs, Dear Phangan sits at a comfortable distance from Ko Pha-ngan's full-moon chaos. The blind menu shifts daily with whatever came in from the market and pier that morning, so booking is essential since the chef cooks only as many portions as there are seats. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the squid stir-fried with ink makes a strong case for why.

  36. Rank 118. Five Olives

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A Neapolitan pizza spot on Phuket that takes its Italian seriousness perhaps more literally than most: the owners fell hard for Italian food culture and built a colonial-style dining room around that conviction. The dough is contemporary with a proper puffy crust, and the menu stretches into pasta and risotto when pizza feels too casual. The cocktail list is more considered than you'd expect. It ranks on 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific and holds a Michelin Guide selection.

  48. Rank 118. Jaan

    Southern Thai

Southern Thai cooking from a family rooted in Trang province, served on vintage plates inherited from the owner's grandmother, in a converted two-storey house wrapped in greenery. The freshly squeezed coconut milk runs through both the savory dishes and the desserts, and the shrimp chilli dip makes a case for starting there. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a place this personal and this specific about where it comes from.

  51. Tables set out in the open air with the beach right there make it hard to take the menu seriously, and then the food arrives. This is a casual, order-at-the-counter Southern Thai spot on Ko Samui where everything is cooked to order, so you wait, and everything comes out hot. The crab coconut milk curry is the one people mention. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and priced like a neighborhood lunch counter.

  87. Four communal tables under chandeliers, surrounded by the chef's personal vintage collection, sets the mood at this cosy Thai café in Chiang Mai. The menu roams across regional styles, with gutsy, vivid flavours doing most of the talking, and the kitchen is particular about sourcing. A complimentary pandan pudding closes things out. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
