Kinds of places

Cuisines

  1. The infinity pool and Rick Stein restaurant are both pointed at the same postcard: Coogee Beach, unobstructed, through wall-to-wall glass. This coastal hotel remade a former Crowne Plaza into 198 rooms done in pale timber and sun-bleached white, with the ocean-facing suites adding outdoor baths for anyone who finds indoor bathing insufficiently theatrical. Sunrise yoga runs on the sand, and a rooftop bar and private pickleball courts fill whatever hours remain.

    The awards

  2. The magnesium rooftop pool looks straight out at the Pacific, which gives you a sense of what this beachfront MGallery hotel is selling. All 213 rooms lean on pale oak and muted tones, with windows sized to make the most of Manly Beach below. Beachfront villas have private terraces, and there are infrared saunas and Peloton bikes for the guests who feel guilty about all that ocean gazing.

    The awards

  3. The rooms at this boutique hotel lean hard into color, which puts it at the opposite end of the spectrum from every beige-corridored property on the strip. QT Bondi sits one block from the beach in the thick of Bondi's cafe-and-surf-shop sprawl, selected by the Michelin Guide. Bills, the Sydney brunch institution, is nearby, and the Speedo Fitness Club handles anyone who overdoes it at dinner.

  4. Rank 204. Apollonia

    Sicilian

    The awards

  5. Rank 204. Bar Planet

    Cocktail Bar

Psychedelic decor, dripping candles, and exposed brick on Enmore Road, all in service of a single obsession: the martini. Bar Planet is a cocktail bar that has essentially written a constitution around one drink, using its own house spirit and offering it neat, miniature, long with soda, or dirty with seaweed and brine. Newtown approves, predictably. The 50 gave it a Discovery listing, which tracks for a bar this committed to doing one thing its own way.

  6. Rank 204. Clam Bar

    Steakhouse

Parquet floors, potted palms, and glossy wood veneer set the scene for this CBD restaurant doing a Sydney riff on the New York steakhouse, with Art Nouveau-inspired artwork on the walls and ice-cold martinis on the tables. The team blends retro Upper East Side opulence with Aussie sensibilities, so old-school Americana sits alongside modish local touches on the menu. The kind of place where the room does half the work before the food arrives.

  8. Rank 204. Old Love's

    Tiki Bar

A basement rum bar beneath Old Mate's Place, Old Love's takes its tiki cues from before the genre went full plastic flamingo. The team's fixation is Caribbean rum, and the rest of the sugarcane world gets its due as well. One co-owner literally wrote the book on the stuff, a guide to what's on offer with cocktail pairings included. Descend when you want someone to make a genuinely considered drink decision on your behalf.

  9. A nondescript office block on Clarence Street hides a cocktail bar split between a speakeasy interior and a rooftop terrace that leans hard into treehouse energy. The drinks are experimental in the good way, butter fat-washed whisky and house-made croissant garnishes without a trace of self-consciousness about it. Cheesesteak riffs soak up the evening. Getting there feels like a small conspiracy, which is clearly the point.

  11. A specialty coffee shop sitting on George Street in the Sydney CBD, where the rotating single-origin lineup changes with the seasons and the baristas treat espresso as a verb, not a noun. The room is sleek without being fussy, which suits the lunchtime office crowd well enough, but it also has the quiet patience of a place where nobody will rush you.

  13. Rank 216. Al Taglio

    Pizzeria

Roman-style pizza by the slice in a small, pretty room on one of Surry Hills' better streets, with a courtyard that fills up when the weather cooperates. The dough gets a long ferment, which gives it the structure to carry serious toppings drawn from Italian regional traditions without going soggy. Appetizers, salads, a pasta or two, and desserts round things out. The cocktail list gets more attention than you'd expect from a slice shop.

  16. Rank 216. Queen Margherita of Savoy

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A wood-fired Neapolitan pizza shop in Cronulla, right where the Sydney suburbs give way to beach town. The family runs the floor with the kind of unhurried attention you can't hire in, and the dough, soft and properly charred from the oven, does the heavy lifting. Red pies and white pies share the menu alongside salads and a tiramisu that no one is skipping. It ranked 25th on the 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific list, which checks out.

  17. A specialty coffee shop tucked into King Street in the CBD, Skittle Lane keeps things spare and deliberate, the kind of minimalist fit-out that makes you notice the coffee instead of the furniture. The focus is on single-origin brews alongside pastries for when a flat white alone feels insufficient. Office workers on a tight clock and laptop regulars settling in for the afternoon tend to coexist without much friction.

  28. Rank 226. Lil Franky Pizzeria

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Buffalo mozzarella flown in from Battipaglia sits on the menu at this casual pizzeria off the Princess Highway in Tempe, a detail that tells you exactly how seriously the team takes sourcing. The dough skips the classic Neapolitan puff in favor of something from the Cilento coast, a little crisper and more compact. Fresh pasta and a short cheese selection round things out, and the room runs warm in the way that makes you linger longer than planned.

  30. A calm, minimalist specialty coffee shop tucked into Potts Point, where the design is spare enough that the coffee has nowhere to hide. Flat whites and pour-overs are the draw, pulled from carefully sourced beans that the team takes quietly seriously. 32. Rank 226. Tio's Cerveceria

    Cocktail Bar

Frozen margaritas for ten dollars in the Surry Hills sun is a strong opening argument. Tio's Cerveceria is a Mexican-leaning bar in the neighborhood's easy-going pocket, with an outdoor setup that earns its keep on a warm afternoon. The mezcal list runs deep, the Michelada is built with enough red pepper to qualify as a wellness decision, and the whole place has the loose, no-fuss energy of somewhere that has quietly figured out exactly what it wants to be.

  34. Around 40 types of chai brew in bubbling pots inside this tiny, caravan-like shop on Pennant Hills Road, and the cardamom-and-clove perfume hits you before you reach the door. The menu draws on the owner's Kenyan upbringing, where cooks pushed the spice levels harder than tradition usually allows. Many blends are named after people he knows, and each one is said to reflect its namesake's personality, which is either charming or a little terrifying depending on your namesake.

The sandwiches are named after family members at this snug North African cafe on Crown Street, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe. The menu wanders from Morocco to Algeria to Tunisia, with fried eggs jolted with cumin and tchouktchouka, a Tunisian cousin of shakshuka built on tomatoes and a 21-spice ras el hanout. A genuinely family-run room, warm enough that you feel the invitation.

  43. Six types of papaya salad is already an argument, and Chat Thai's menu runs to around 200 dishes from there. This long-running Thai restaurant near Circular Quay sources holy basil and garlic from the family farm, which shows up in the larb, the curries, and the stir-fries in ways that supermarket herbs simply don't. The location draws Opera House crowds and ferry commuters alike, but the kitchen isn't coasting on the view.

  46. The charcoal smoke rolling out toward Granville Station has been redirecting commuters for decades. This is a Lebanese charcoal chicken shop, the original location of a Sydney institution, and the garlic sauce has generated enough devotion to spawn interstate outposts and genuinely long queues. Chicken, chips, and that sauce are the move, though the hot chips roll has its own following. Simple, cash-friendly, and absolutely not somewhere you walk past without stopping.

  48. Rank 240. Fratelli Paradiso

    Modern Italian

  49. Rank 240. Gelato Messina

    Ice Cream Shop

The milk for the gelato comes from Messina's own Jersey herd on a Victorian farm, which is either charming or excessive depending on how seriously you take ice cream. This is the Marrickville flagship of Sydney's cult gelato chain, and it goes well beyond scoops: frozen tiramisu tarts, a chocolate cabinet full of artisan riffs on Iced VoVos and Wagon Wheels, and rotating specials with names like Robert Brownie Jr. sit alongside the pistachio praline regulars swear by.

  50. Mazesoba is ramen's broth-free cousin, and Iiko brought the style to Sydney before anyone else bothered. The noodles arrive loaded with umami-heavy toppings, and bottles of chili oil and kombu vinegar sit on the table so you can keep adjusting until the bowl is exactly yours. The co-owner studied noodle-making in Osaka, and it shows in the depth of a dish that doesn't need soup to feel complete. A noodle shop worth squeezing into on Hay Street.

  51. Jonathan Barthelmess, whose Apollo has been packing rooms in Sydney for years, opened this Greek dining room in Redfern's Wunderlich Lane with the same gift for making a space feel like somewhere everyone already knows. The spanakopita makes the rounds at nearly every table, and the prasopita, a flaky spiral with four melted cheeses, is what your neighbor ordered first. Spanakopita and charred octopus are the things to know.

  52. Spring rolls that pull weekend queues to a Vietnamese restaurant tucked into Cabramatta are worth understanding. The crunch comes from a style of rice paper that's genuinely hard to source, producing a shell that's thick, glossy, and audibly crisp in a way most versions never manage. The kitchen traces its lineage back to the neighborhood's landmark Thanh Binh, and that pedigree shows in the cooking. Food writer Andrew Levins has called the spring rolls the finest in the country.

  54. The pink-and-rouge facade with its pearlescent sign looks like it belongs to a different era, which is fitting because Sean's has been around forever under various names. A casual, artistically eclectic restaurant on Campbell Parade, it does inventive home-style cooking with warm hospitality and a wide-angle view of Bondi Beach that makes you forget whatever you ordered. The menu is the kind that feels approachable right up until you realize how good it is.

  55. The milk buns here come stuffed with American cheddar, egg, and potato hash, finished with a dill-heavy riff on Big Mac sauce, which tells you exactly where this bread shoppe's head is at. Hoagies on house-baked ciabatta, a four-cheese toastie loaded with mushrooms and smoked salt, and a halal-friendly meat selection keep the queue moving through Jubilee Avenue. Carbs as a serious vocation, dressed as a casual sandwich stop.

  57. The Soulmate Bae roll comes stuffed with house-made sambal, herb mayo, and Red Leicester because one co-owner's grandmother kept it in the fridge, and that's the kind of detail that tells you everything. This Newtown brunch spot runs on toasties and morning rolls with just enough left-field thinking to keep the menu interesting. Staff move at a clip, and the takeaway line stays honest.

  58. Shunde, a Cantonese city with UNESCO gastronomy status, doesn't get much representation in Sydney, which is what makes this Hurstville restaurant worth knowing. The menu leans into dishes you won't find on every dim sum trolley, including fried milk, which arrives either savory with fish cakes and roe or sweet with mango, and fried milk rolls that land somewhere between a spring roll and a cannoli.

  60. The lamington, Australia's beloved chocolate-coconut sponge, gets a full reimagining at this specialty cake shop in Newtown. The original comes with raspberry jam and carries a quietly personal backstory, but the fairy bread version, popcorn buttercream and all, is the one that stops people mid-sentence. Yuzu meringue and black sesame round out a menu that treats a childhood staple with enough seriousness to make that feel completely reasonable.

  61. Rank 240. Tuga Pastries

    Portuguese Bakery

  62. The wild yeasts here come from flowers collected across New South Wales, which the brewer describes as something like collecting dreams. Wildflower is a craft brewery and taproom in Marrickville's industrial brewing corridor, where the beers taste deeply local because they are, down to the plum varietals. The grilled Jersey cheese from a nearby dairy is reason enough to eat, and the collaborators propping up the menu read like a who's who of Sydney's food scene.

  63. The dough here starts with single-heritage emmer wheat grown up north and ferments for three days before it sees fire, which is a longer backstory than most pizzas get. Westwood is a pizza shop in Newtown where the team sources everything, salami, vegetables, cheese, honey, and the timber in the oven, from within New South Wales. It reads like a provenance exercise but eats like a neighbourhood pizza night.

  65. Rank 240. Yan Restaurant

    Asian Barbecue

  66. The awarma and egg pizza here tells a small family history: confit lamb preserved through Lebanese winters, combined with a daughter's preference for sunny-side-up eggs, folded into a man'oushe. This old-school Lebanese flatbread house in Guildford has been around forever, and the menu has grown to include things like a haloumi spring roll wrapped in deep-fried phyllo with za'atar, which is either an identity crisis or a perfectly reasonable Tuesday lunch.

  67. The centrepiece is a long juniper-blue bar that keeps your eyes on the bartenders and nowhere else, which is exactly the point. Eileen's is the Sydney cocktail bar from Australian gin brand Four Pillars, and it sidesteps the usual branded-venue trap of feeling like a pop-up in disguise. The room is minimal and deliberate, the drinks list built around their own spirits. Expect gin in most of its forms, done with more care than novelty.

  69. Rank 282. Shady Pines Saloon

    Cocktail Bar

  70. Rank 282. The Baxter Inn

    Cocktail Bar

A basement at the end of an alley off Clarence Street, the kind of door you'd walk past twice before finding. Inside, 456 bottles of mostly single malts climb a seven-tier back-bar that basically functions as wallpaper. It's a whisky-forward cocktail bar, serious without being solemn, and the queue outside on any given night suggests the city has quietly figured out where the door is.

  71. Rank 282. The Gidley

    Steakhouse

A basement steakhouse beneath Sydney's CBD, The Gidley feels like a very good secret: dark timber, velvet banquettes, polished brass, and low light that flatters everyone equally. Dry-aged Australian beef goes over an ironbark and charcoal grill with the kind of restraint that lets the meat do the talking. The wine list leans into serious Australian regions alongside European classics. It ranks among the World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants.

  72. Bistecca alla Fiorentina, one cut, one fire, no negotiating the menu. This Tuscan steakhouse tucked along Dalley Street runs on dry-aged Australian beef over ironbark and charcoal, in a brick-ceilinged room lit mostly by the glow of the grill. It landed on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, and the stripped-back conviction of the place makes that easy to believe. The pace slows the moment you sit down, which is either the point or the warning, depending on your evening.

  73. The open grill at the center of the room sets the agenda here: this is a flame-led steakhouse inside a Western Sydney club, and Dany Karam runs it with the kind of seriousness that earns a spot on the World's 101 Best Steak Restaurants list. The kitchen dry-ages beef with patience, has access to whole-carcass Wagyu, and doesn't pretend the grill is the only idea. The copper-and-marble room seats six meters high but still reads warm.

  74. Sandstone walls from The Rocks surround this wood-fired steakhouse, which lands at number 93 on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list. Australian beef is aged wet and dry before meeting the grill, where the kitchen uses flame for depth rather than theatre. The room runs to timber, leather, and warm lighting, serious enough to feel like an occasion without making you straighten your back. 75. Rank 291. Blu Bar on 36

    Cocktail Bar

  76. Rank 291. Eau-De-Vie

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar in Darlinghurst where the drinks arrive with a bit of performance baked in, not just poured. The menu moves between classics and quietly tweaked versions of classics, the kind of place where the bartender knows why a recipe changed in 1947 and will tell you if you ask. A devoted local crowd has kept it busy for years, which is its own kind of argument.

  77. Rank 291. Gardel's Bar

    Argentine

Dark red banquettes, ceiling fans, black-and-white photos on the walls, and a vintage football table set the tone at this elegantly retro cocktail bar above Porteño in Surry Hills. Named for tango legend Carlos Gardel, it leans hard into its Argentine identity with a six-page all-Argentine wine list, more than twenty available by the glass. Bar snacks keep things light if the asado downstairs feels like a commitment.

  78. Rank 291. Grandma's

    Tiki Bar

  79. Rank 291. Hemmesphere

    Cocktail Bar

Velvet in every direction and a semi-covered terrace that lets you smoke while pretending you're in Manhattan: Hemmesphere is a cocktail bar that has been setting the Sydney standard since before most of its regulars knew what a coupe glass was. It started as a members-only room, dropped the velvet rope without dropping the velvet, and now just lets anyone in to enjoy well-made drinks and the kind of room that makes you order a second.

  80. Rank 291. Lobo

    Rum Cocktail Bar

A spiral staircase drops you into a basement rum bar done up with faded wallpaper, plantation chairs, and tropical plants, all of it named for Julio Lobo, the sugar king of Havana who lost everything to Castro. The CBD address is quietly absurd, tucked next to an unassuming Chinese restaurant on Clarence Street, but downstairs the Caribbean fantasy holds. The list leans deep into rum, and the room rewards lingering.

  81. Rank 291. LOW 302

    Cocktail Bar

Red velvet curtains and Victorian mahogany panelling inside what was once a Greek restaurant: LOW 302 is a Darlinghurst neighbourhood bar that layers its charm on thick without feeling like it's trying. Local bands play a few nights a week, craft beers and a short cocktail list cover the classics, and the scavenged furniture gives the whole room the feeling of a very well-curated skip.

  82. Rank 291. Palmer and Co

    Prohibition Cocktail Bar

A 4am license is already reason enough, but Palmer and Co earns it. Tucked into an arched brick basement down a back alley, this Prohibition-era cocktail bar from the Merivale group goes all-in on the speakeasy concept: floor mosaics, period glassware, aged mirrors, and enough taxidermy to make the late Mr. Palmer feel at home. The kind of place where staying until closing time is less a decision than a natural consequence.

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar in Potts Point where the menu leans on classic riffs and the room leans on black leather, cabinets of cocktail ephemera, and a rock 'n' roll soundtrack. Liquid nitrogen turns up in a few of the drinks, including a martini shaken with the cold stuff. The nitrogen trolley that once made tableside rounds now sits marooned in the middle of the room, a victim of local legislation, which is perhaps the most interesting piece of bar furniture in Sydney.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
