The Best Places to Eat and Stay in Japan

Eat + Stay, change section
  1. Walls lined with local cedar set the tone at this boutique hotel in central Sapporo, where the design splits the difference between big-city loft and mountain lodge. The lobby lounge leans into an après-ski mood, and the in-house restaurant, Les Bois, runs from breakfast through late-night drinks. A Seicomart and a beloved local confectionery are also in the building, which is either convenient or dangerous depending on your self-control.

    The awards

  2. A boutique hotel in Shinjuku with a front-row seat to Central Park's shrines and footpaths, and a short ride from the sprawling gardens of Shinjuku Gyo-en. Rooms run minimalist, deep blues and grays, some with park views. On-site, the Morethan Tapas Lounge handles cocktails and the occasional DJ, while the bakery keeps breakfast mercifully unfussy. The hotel will also sort you a bike rental, which in this neighborhood is not a bad idea at all.

    The awards

  3. The hotel occupies the top floors of a Shinagawa office tower, with a seven-story atrium full of natural light, a pond, and the city spread out beyond it. Run by All Nippon Airways and pitched at executives, it's a polished business hotel in a quietly European register, wood and stone rather than marble and lacquer. Corner rooms open on two walls of panorama. Shinagawa station sits just below, which makes it convenient for almost everything.

    The awards

  4. A private-beach club tier sitting within the larger Busena Terrace Resort, the Terrace Club offers its guests a quieter stretch of sand, dedicated dining, and access to Wellness Thalasso, a spa built around seawater therapies including water workouts in a dedicated pool. Okinawa has a reputation for longevity, and the resort leans into it without apology. Cabanas, cocktails, and tailor-made treatments fill the days for guests who came specifically to do very little.

    The awards

  5. Floors 38 through 57 of Japan's tallest building, the Abeno Harukas, with floor-to-ceiling windows in every one of the 360 rooms, and a corner room that frankly makes the case for itself. This Marriott is a different species from its airport cousins: futuro-minimalist geometry, deep soaking tubs, and an aurora-themed bar that glows in shifting rainbow light. Restaurants, a gym, a bakery, and a tea lounge mean you may not need to leave, which is fine since Osaka is right there when you do.

    The awards

  6. The open-air baths on Mount Wakakusa's lower slopes look out over all of ancient Nara, which sets the tone for a stay here. This boutique hotel threads a mid-century renovation through the ryokan tradition, keeping the onsen baths and the careful, unhurried attention that goes with them. The restaurant folds French technique into Japanese flavors while sharing the same sweeping panorama. Deer may or may not wander past; Nara being Nara, probably yes.

    The awards

  7. Public baths on the top floor look out over Sapporo's skyline, which sets the tone for this design-forward business hotel in the middle of the city. Rooms come in three color schemes named urban, natural, and hip, and all have rain showers and French press coffee makers. A restaurant pairs French technique with Japanese dishes, and a second-floor bar handles cocktails. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels.

    The awards

  8. The Club InterContinental floor sits at the top with private-label champagne on permanent tap, which sets the tone for the whole hotel. This luxury property in the Lilac Square complex takes the upper floors, and 149 rooms look out over parkland and Sapporo's river corridor. A heated pool runs twenty meters on the ninth level, and the Norva Lounge splits into fire and forest sections, because subtlety only goes so far.

    The awards

  9. A former art gallery on the edge of Kanazawa's central park, Korinkyo converted the bones rather than hiding them, so the high-arched windows and industrial frame still read exactly as they did. It's a minimalist boutique hotel now, with pale beige-and-gray rooms, exposed beams, and curving walls. Teacups and bathrobes were made by local artisans, and the air carries a faint scent from an on-site distillery. Rooftop cypress baths overlook the treetops.

    The awards

  10. The ground floor is wrapped in loose-crossing timber, and everything inside, down to the staff uniforms, was designed by architect Kengo Kuma. This boutique hotel sits in Oshiage, in the shadow of the Tokyo Skytree, a few train stops east of the center. Rooms run from compact Studios to Library suites. The lobby café doubles as an all-day bar, and the rooftop terrace offers a close-up of the tower that no postcard has quite managed.

    The awards

  11. Four houseboats moored on a canal in Tennozu, Tokyo's arts district, make up this small hotel, and no two look remotely alike from the water. Inside, the rooms are quieter and more luxurious than the wild exteriors promise, which is either a relief or a mild disappointment depending on what drew you here. The neighborhood, built up by the same group behind the hotel, handles dining. A Michelin Selected Hotel.

    The awards

  12. The headboards are hand-printed Kyo-Karakami paper, which tells you something about where the budget went in these minimalist suites. A design-forward aparthotel near Toji Temple and Kyoto Station, it pairs classical Japanese lattice and craft details with clean modernist lines. Rooms come with kitchenettes, dining tables, and washer-dryers, and a bento breakfast arrives at your door, which makes roughing it feel surprisingly civilized.

    The awards

  13. A ryokan in the mountains of Ishikawa Prefecture where someone has thought carefully about how shadows fall on a wall when light filters through a bamboo screen. Seventeen rooms, each with tatami living areas, private cypress baths fed by hot springs, and windows framing the woods. Three communal baths look nothing alike. The kitchen follows the seasons closely, drawing from both mountain and coast. It holds a Michelin Key.

    The awards

  14. Every room at this modernist ryokan in Ishikawa's Yamashiro Onsen comes with its own private outdoor hot spring bath, which sets a fairly high floor for what counts as a quiet evening. The architecture reads as a natural continuation of Japanese minimalism rather than a departure from it, and the kaiseki dinners and serene garden setting follow classical ryokan form. The library catalogues the property's mosses, which tells you everything about the pace here.

    The awards

  15. A U-shaped limestone counter, white lab coats, and bowties might suggest a pharmaceutical trial, but this is a coffee shop where the specialty is flights, one bean expressed as a pour over, espresso, latte, and mocktail in sequence. The spacious warehouse setting is sleek and unhurried, and the staff are warmer than the outfits imply. Evenings bring spiked coffee cocktails if the science-class atmosphere has you feeling experimental.

  16. Perched on a hill above Fukuoka with greenery on all sides, this small luxury hotel is essentially a ryokan wearing a hotel's clothes. The 46 rooms range from tatami-style traditional to Japanese modernist, all feeling more like secluded inn rooms than city-hotel standard-issue. A hot spring, a spa, and a kaiseki restaurant fill out the picture. Fukuoka sits low on most Western itineraries, which means the crowds here are manageable.

    The awards

  17. Bare concrete and tatami rooms coexist here without apology, which tells you most of what you need to know about this design-forward hotel in Kanazawa, a city Japanese travelers have long kept to themselves. Rooms run from Western standards to loft and bunk configurations, and the bathrooms read like a minimalist fever dream. A tea salon anchors the ground floor; a rooftop deck offers air. The Michelin Guide has it among its Selected Hotels.

    The awards

  18. Marriott's answer to the boutique hotel moment, the Moxy pitches itself as the hip, budget-friendly option Tokyo has long been short on. The theme is "Edo Pop," and it commits: graphic art and color saturate the public spaces, while rooms stay compact but cleverly organized, with storage out in the open because nobody uses a wardrobe. A ground-floor bar, lounge, and noodle station run around the clock, so there's no awkward hour.

    The awards

  19. The awards

  20. Sixteen rooms is not many, but that's the whole point at this boutique hotel a short walk from Hakata Station. Designer Ryu Kosaka, also behind the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo, keeps the look warm but uncluttered. Private balconies, deep soaking tubs, a rooftop jacuzzi, and a guests-only bar with a library feel give the place a country-retreat quality that feels improbable this close to a major train hub.

    The awards

  21. Yakushima is the island that inspired the forest in Princess Mononoke, and Sankara is where you sleep after you've spent the day proving that to yourself. This boutique auberge-style resort holds a Michelin Key and skips the ryokan format entirely, offering Western-style rooms with sea or forest views, a spa drawing on Thai treatments, and a restaurant that earns its keep. The trails are the real pull; Sankara is a very comfortable base camp.

    The awards

  22. Cypress soaking tubs, tatami rooms, sliding screens opening to private stone gardens: this ryokan on the remote island of Ikuchijima in Japan's Inland Sea was built inside a merchant estate that Adrian Zecha, the Aman founder, chose to restore rather than replace. The restaurant serves local and seasonal ingredients with French technique, meals are communal by default, and a traditional bathhouse across the street is shared with locals. It holds a Michelin Key.

  23. Three buildings by Pritzker laureates Shigeru Ban and Ryue Nishizawa spread through the Nagano forest an hour from Tokyo, which is a significant architectural flex for a hotel. Rooms run from Western to tatami, the restaurant serves French-Japanese cuisine built around local and seasonal produce, and there's a dedicated architecture library for when the trees lose their novelty. It holds a Michelin Key.

  24. Ten rooms, each with its own hot spring bath open to the garden, in a hotel where the architecture can't quite decide between shoin, sukiya, and Spanish Revival, and somehow pulls it off. Tucked into the northwest hills of Kyoto, this old-school ryokan-style retreat serves dinner built around Awaji Island seafood in a dining room lit by washi paper. The Michelin Guide lists it among its selected hotels.

    The awards

  25. A hotel built on Sapporo's old brewery grounds, which now anchor a sprawling shopping and entertainment complex that has made the city Hokkaido's cultural front door. The MGallery property leans hard into maximalist-chic interiors: arches, plush upholstery, and furnishings with a faint steampunk undertow. Rooms pull back toward calm, with wall paneling and Japanese restraint doing the heavy lifting. The name means "revival," which scans after a long day of doing Hokkaido properly.

    The awards

  26. Tadao Ando designed this mountaintop retreat in Ehime, and concrete here somehow reads as weightless. Seven suites run white on white, with the occasional blonde-wood chair allowed in on good behavior, and the floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Seto Inland Sea as the main event. The rock garden, the pool, the udon in the restaurant, all of it sustains the same considered quiet. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Key.

    The awards

  27. Nineteen rooms on a wooded peninsula on Okinawa's quieter east coast, this villa-style resort from the Hiramatsu group earns a Michelin Key. Every room comes with a private terrace jacuzzi and a view out to the water, and the spa and restaurant, which blends Okinawan traditions with French and Italian cooking, are on hand when the sea stops being enough. Small enough that it never feels like a hotel in the ordinary sense.

    The awards

  28. Each cup arrives with a color-coded card explaining the bean's origin and flavor notes, which is either charmingly educational or a gentle reminder that you are in a serious coffee shop. LiLo is a small-batch roaster pushing brighter, lighter blends into an Osaka scene that has long favored dark roasts. The storefront is tight and not designed for lingering, but the staff makes specialists and newcomers feel equally welcome.

  29. A restored 1907 teahouse sits at the heart of this ryokan, its sukiya-style architecture so quietly composed that the newer wing simply adopted the same wood-and-clay vocabulary rather than argue with it. Hinoki soaking tubs face floor-to-ceiling garden views, tatami and sliding panels do the decorating, and the Fuji-fed springs suggest you have nowhere urgent to be. The on-site restaurant leans hard into the local catch. A Michelin Key property.

  30. A luxury hotel built to mirror the silhouette of Nagoya Castle, which sits directly across the way. The Michelin Guide selected it for its list of hotels. Inside, contemporary artworks fill the public spaces in deliberate contrast to the 17th-century landmark outside. Rooms lean into traditional craftsmanship, and some come with onsen-fed soaking tubs. The spa has its own hot spring facility and an indoor pool, and several restaurants cover French, Chinese, sushi, and teppanyaki.

    The awards

  31. Moksa sits on the Takano River in Yase, a village that has drawn people seeking quiet since long before wellness became a brand. This modern ryokan-style inn takes its name from a Sanskrit word for liberation, which sets expectations appropriately. Rooms are pale wood and tatami, with sliding paper screens that open onto the river or moss gardens. Private saunas, a tea room, and the Kikyorai lounge with craft cocktails round out the retreat.

    The awards

  32. Every suite at this ryokan on the art island of Naoshima comes with its own open-air bath, which sets the tone rather well. Earthen walls, low futons, tatami mats, and handmade paper screens keep things quietly beautiful. The building doubles as a gallery, and the bar and minimalist firepit pull in the art-world crowd that arrives for the installations and stays for the sake. Holds a Michelin Key.

    The awards

  33. Shigeru Ban designed this resort complex on the Hiroshima coast, where mountains meet the sea and a modern art museum sits at the center of it all. The ten villas are each distinct, from the Wall-Less House to the Paper House built from recycled paper tubes, while waterfront rooms have baths of cypress or Towada stone. A French restaurant and a light-filled lounge round it out. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

    The awards

  34. Asian elm beams finished in Japanese lacquer arch over the lobby of this twelve-room mountain retreat in Niigata Prefecture, where the Japanese Alps supply the view and several meters of seasonal snow supply the atmosphere. The design pulls from old rural kominka farmhouse tradition and a streak of Scandinavian minimalism, with Noguchi and Finn Juhl furnishings alongside tatami floors and paper lanterns. Hot springs, foraged dinners, and complimentary sake round out the case for not leaving.

  35. A fire took the original inn in 2018, and the replacement was handed to architect Tetsuo Kobori, which tells you something about the ambition here. Kofuyuden Beniya is a contemporary ryokan in Awara's hot-spring district, designed so the building's orientation catches the breeze for natural cooling. The same thermal waters feed the communal baths, the in-room tubs, and even the floors beneath your feet. Kaiseki dinner comes with the stay, and the Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  53. The dried daikon strips simmered in clam stock here are a dish the chef tracked down through old Edo literature, not a family recipe. This stylish Tokyo restaurant specializes in the cuisine of old Edo, a tradition distinct enough from kaiseki that most visitors haven't tasted it before. Shiba shrimp, named for the inlet where they were once caught, arrive in soup as fishcake, and the bonito broth is made without kombu, the way it always was.

    Japanese Noodle Shop

A soba shop tucked inside a sake brewery, where the water used to brew rice wine also goes into the noodles. The neighborhood name translates loosely to "pure water town," which tells you most of what you need to know. The chef hand-grinds buckwheat in a stone mortar and makes the noodles entirely from buckwheat flour. Order the mizusoba, noodles dipped in cold water alone, which is apparently how farmers tested a harvest and how you'll understand the point of all that grinding.

Handmade pasta learned in the kitchens of Piedmont is the anchor at this Italian restaurant in Chuo-ku, where the chef folds Japanese seasonal produce into a northern Italian framework. The name nods to Ristorante Il Centro in Piedmont, where the training happened, and that debt shows in the way farm ingredients get treated with almost personal reverence. The cooking sits somewhere between two regional traditions without feeling confused about which one it is.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
