The last unmarked door at the end of a long basement corridor, no bell, no sign, just turn the handle. This is a cocktail bar tucked beneath a Nordic restaurant on Great Jones Street, sharing a kitchen with the dining room upstairs. The room reads as intentionally low-key, the kind of place where knowing how to find it is half the point, and the other half is that you actually got in.

A basement cocktail bar on Rivington, reached by a utilitarian staircase and lit just enough to read the menu, which is worth reading because it's full of jokes. Booth seating, exposed brick, and a short row of spirits on the back bar keep things grounded for a room connected to Death & Co. The drinks are serious; the room refuses to be.

It's a neighborhood cocktail bar on Greenwich Avenue with a modern British menu running alongside, but people mostly come for the warm room and the staff who seem to mean it. Think London train station, interpreted loosely and affectionately.

Moody leather and brass in a Tribeca townhouse set the stage for a modern steakhouse that takes its theatrics seriously. USDA Prime and Japanese Wagyu go through a high-heat grill after dry-aging, and the kitchen consistently delivers on both. The room has a genuine late-night-Manhattan pull to it. Service can be uneven given the price point, but the cooking tends to carry the evening. It ranked 67th on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list.

The mid-century room, with its bright orange window frames and striped banquettes, looks like someone raided a very good vintage furniture store and then had the taste to stop. Dan Kluger's West Village restaurant leans vegetable-forward without making a cause of it, and the wood-oven pizzas made with house-milled whole wheat flour keep tables ordering rounds they didn't plan on. A downtown crowd that takes its produce seriously fills the place most nights.

Named one of New York's best new restaurants of 2024 by the Times.

A 60-day aged Txuleton ribeye, cooked over a charcoal-fired grill and a Spanish wood oven, is the reason this Basque steakhouse inside Mercado Little Spain exists. The kitchen splits its sourcing between American producers and Spanish importers, which puts Ibérico pork and Spanish lamb alongside the beef with a logic that holds. Sommeliers steer you toward Spanish bottles, and the martini comes with olive oil-infused gin and a Basque gilda, because of course it does.
