The Best Places in France

  1. Tucked between two storied concert halls on Boulevard Rochechouart, this design hotel keeps things calm while Montmartre does the opposite outside. Rooms run spacious and neutral, some with rooftop views, and the eucalyptus wood furnishings give the place a quiet, considered feel without trying too hard. A guest-only coffee bar and screening room mean you can ignore the neighborhood entirely, though that would rather miss the point.

  3. The antique elevator and grand marble staircase are original; the ivory, terracotta, and olive color palette is very much not. This Pigalle hotel, part of the Orso collection and reimagined by Festen studio, sits on the old boulevard with an Art Deco façade and garret rooms on the top floors angled toward the Sacré Cœur. There's a street-level brasserie packed with locals, a speakeasy below ground, and an open-air rooftop bar above it all.

  5. A floral arrangement now marks the spot where a hospital altar once stood, beneath a dome that used to look over a maternity ward. This luxury hotel along the Rhône occupies two heritage buildings that delivered babies until 2000, now reimagined by Parisian designer Jean-Philippe Nuel in a style best described as contemporary-luxe meeting 18th-century grandeur. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key. Lyon being Lyon, the restaurants are serious business too.

  6. Perched on Fourvière Hill above the Saône, this luxury hotel was designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, decorated by Jacques Grange, and landscaped by Louis Benech, which tells you immediately what register you're in. Rooms run between Carrara marble bathrooms and sweeping rooftop panoramas. The spa leans into its Roman hill setting with columns and bath-house atmosphere. The lounge bar pours wines from a nearby 17th-century chateau. It holds a Michelin Key.

  7. Philippe Starck designed the interiors, which tells you something about who this wellness resort near Saint-Tropez is for, and what they expect to spend. Twenty minutes from the circus of the port, Lily of the Valley sits on a hillside above Gigaro Beach with a spa, a 25-meter outdoor pool, and a restaurant angled toward the bay. The menu leans heavily vegetarian and vegan, which fits the self-improvement brief. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys.

  8. A lovingly restored country estate outside Montpellier, spread across 120-odd acres of meadows, vineyards, and old-growth trees that take the concept of a garden quite seriously. The Michelin Guide awarded it 2 Keys. Rooms differ wildly, from Belle Époque reds and lavenders to grayscale rooms furnished with accordion lamps, which is a choice. Freestanding tubs, hidden doors, and private terraces appear throughout, and the on-site restaurant leans hard into Slow Food principles.

    Creative Bistro

Black and white floor tiles lead to a stainless steel counter overlooking an open kitchen, which is exactly where you want to sit. This creative bistro in the 1er is Pierre Touitou's latest project, and he's the chef who helped define the new Parisian bistronomy wave. The cooking leans into North African and Mediterranean flavors with a light touch, and natural wines fill the list without apology.

  15. A country inn perched above a gorge where the Chéran River runs far below, which sets a dramatic tone before you've even looked at a menu. The chef cooks modern French with a strong lean toward vegetables and foraged things, and if you've been out hunting mushrooms yourself, he'll apparently take a look at what you found. A discovery menu runs in the evenings and weekends; lunch is a tidier, more affordable affair.

    Modern French

A zellige-tiled wall and a terrace on a quiet pedestrian street frame this modern bistro in the old port quarter of La Rochelle. The cooking is French and seafood-leaning, with the chef handling the savory side and his partner running desserts, some of which are quietly dedicated to her grandmother, Annette, whose name the place carries. A Franco-British couple who met in Amsterdam then moved here: the origin story alone is worth the table conversation.

  62. Terracotta tiles and old beams set the scene at this country restaurant in a small village north of Paris, where two sisters run the room and their partners run the kitchen. The cooking is seasonal and modern, the kind where a smoked trout starter sits comfortably next to a classical braise. The menu rotates often enough that regulars have a reason to keep coming back, which they do.

  79. Pendant lights hang over exposed stonework a short walk from the Loire, and the two people running this modern restaurant in Nantes are the chef and the pastry chef, a couple who split the service between them: one covers the savory courses, the other steps in for dessert. Lunch leans casual and market-driven; dinner shifts into more ambitious territory. The room is warm and unshowy, and the cooking follows suit.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
